Three Dinos drafted in the top five of the CFL Draft

Monday, May 6th, 2013

The University of  Calgary Dinos might not have won the Vanier Cup this past season, but were the big winners on Monday in the first round of the 2013 Canadian Football League draft.

A total of three Dinos were drafted among the top five selections on Monday. Defensive tackle Linden Gaydosh was drafted first overall by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He was followed by the Montreal Alouettes selecting linebacker Mike Edem with the third overall pick and the Alouettes selecting Steven Lumbala with the fifth overall pick.

A poor decision by former Edmonton Eskimos General Manager Eric Tillman is a major reason why Montreal had two first round picks in the 2013 draft today, while the Eskimos had none. On September 12, 2012, the Eskimos traded their first and fourth round pick of this year’s draft with kicker Derek Schiavone for kicker Brody McKnight.

Shaw’s future in Edmonton may be in jeopardy

Thursday, September 13th, 2012

It appears the future of Grant Shaw as the Edmonton Eskimos’ kicker may be in question.

That is what happens when you miss two game winning field goals in a matter of four days against your provincial rival.

This week the Eskimos acquired non-import kicker Brody McKnight from the Montreal Alouettes for Derek Schiavone and their first and fourth round draft picks in the 2013 Canadian Collegiate draft.

The Eskimos were searching for a kicker when punter Burke Dales was injured on Labour Day at McMahon Stadium.  Dales injured his foot and is on the nine game injured list.

Stampeders might use strange CFL rule to advantage

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

This is always a very interesting time in the Canadian Football League– free agency with significant movement among the eight franchises.

But one player the Calgary Stampeders reportedly have their eye on has never played professional football before.

According to TSN, the Stampeders are very interested in Australian punter Scott Crough because Burke Dales is a free agent.

Crough has no North American Football experience but he does though have Australian Football League experience.

But if Crough decides to sign with the Stampeders, he will become a non-import. I always thought players had to be Canadian or have to have a family connection to a Canadian to be considered a non-import.

That is apparently not the case. According to the CFL, players are considered non-imports if they have not played organized football outside Canada before. But isn’t Australian Football a type of football?

So that makes Crough a non-import. Crazy rule. But reality. Thumbs up to Stampeders General Manager and Head Coach John Hufnagel for knowing the rules and possibly using them to his advantage.

What do you think and what is your reaction to Crough being considered a non-import?

Weekend Sports Preview–November 5 & 6–NHL, NCAA, CFL, NFL & World Golf Championship

Nikolai Khabibulin (Dan Nicholas, Wikimedia Commons)

From every angle possible, it is a great time to be an Edmonton Oilers fan. The kids are producing. The veterans are producing. The entire team is buying into Tom Renney’s defensive-minded system and Nikolai Khabibulin has been completely spectacular.

On Saturday night, the Oilers (8-2-2), visit the Phoenix Coyotes at Jobing.com Arena (CBC, 8pm). Edmonton is currently tied with the Chicago Blackhawks for first place in the Western Conference. They have also only given up 18 goals all season long, five fewer than second place Dallas at 23 goals. The recent play of Khabibulin led Brad May of Rogers Sportsnet to say last night that Khabibulin right now “is the best goaltender in the NHL.”

The Coyotes meanwhile are trying to get to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the third year in a row. The last two seasons they have lost to the Detroit Red Wings in the Western Conference Quarterfinals. So far in 2011-12, they are 6-4-2, and tied with the Nashville Predators, Colorado Avalanche, San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings for fifth place in the Western Conference.

The Coyotes’ top player this season is Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta native Ray Whitney, who leads Phoenix with five goals, seven assists.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Weekend Sports Preview–NFL, MLB Playoffs, CFL–October 1-2, 2011

Darian Durant (Bing Images)

Sorry folks, I have two major commitments this weekend, a house warming party and two hockey pools, and won’t see as much sports as I’d like.

But here are the events I will get to see.

Saturday–NLDS–Game 1–Arizona Diamondbacks @ Milwaukee Brewers–Sportsnet–Noon–I’m very interested in this series and am pulling for the Brewers in the playoffs. Milwaukee is sending Yovanni Gallardo to the mound (17-10, 207 K, 3.52 ERA) against Arizona’s Ian Kennedy (21-4, 198 K, 2.88 ERA). Arizona will try and stop Milwaukee’s two biggest bats– Prince Fielder (.299, 38 HR, 120 RBIs) and Ryan Braun (.332, 33 HR, 111 RBIs). The Diamondbacks meanwhile are led by Justin Upton (.289, 31 HR, 88 RBIs), who is playing in the 2011 postseason along with his B.J. in Tampa Bay.

Saturday–CFL–Saskatchewan Roughriders @ Calgary Stampeders–TSN–2pm–It is getting very crowded in the Canadian Football League’s Western Division as the Stampeders (7-5) lead the Edmonton Eskimos and British Columbia Lions at 7-6 and the Roughriders at 4-8. Prior to last week, the Roughriders seemed to turn things around a little as they had won three straight before getting hammered 42-5 to the Lions. The Stampeders, meanwhile are coming off a terrible defensive performance themselves, in giving up 55 points in a loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. It’s been a fine year for Stampeders’ punter Burke Dales of Collingwood, Ontario, who leads the CFL with 47 yards per punt. The Roughriders are led by quarterback Darian Durant. Despite having a losing record, Durant actually has his quarterback rating (89.4) of his career.

Stampeders beat Tiger-Cats for first home win

Sunday, August 7th, 2011

For the first time in the 2011 Canadian Football League season, the Calgary Stampeders have won at McMahon Stadium.

On Saturday night, the Stampeders  defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 32-20, in front of a solid crowd of 29, 307.

A major reason for the Stampeders’ success was that they were able to play turnover free football. Quarterback Henry Burris had zero interceptions in 39 pass attempts, while the running back tandem of Joffrey Reynolds and Jon Cornish had no fumbles on 14 carries.

Actually, the only turnover came late in the game on an Eric Fraser interception. The native of Burnaby, British Columbia and product of Central Michigan recorded his first career interception that sealed a Stampeder victory.

Stamps win nail biter in Winnipeg

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

The Calgary Stampeders can play a better brand of football. I think we all know that.

But the bottom line is they got two points in the standings tonight after a close 21-20 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Canad Inns Stadium.

Henry Burris might not have been at his best. He went 17 for 32 with 183 yards. But when the game was on the line and Calgary down 20-14, Burris was there in delivering three key passes, two to Ken-yon Rambo (one touchdown pass) and one to Johnny Forzani following a key fumble recovery by Keon Raymond with 5:11 left in the fourth quarter.

Another area where the Stampeders were weak was in the running game. Joffrey Reynolds only ran for forty yards on seven carries.

Calgary Stampeders Game Recap–October 11

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

For the third time in their last four games, the Calgary Stampeders played extremely lousy, and in this particular game I finished paying attention to the game at half time!

The Alouettes’ defense steamrolled the Stampeders by limiting Calgary to only four first half points– a Burke Dales 50 yard punt single in the first quarter and a Rob Maver 24 yard field goal in the second quarter.

Calgary Stampeders Game Notes

Saturday, October 2nd, 2010

Bing Images

After very brutal performances (one from the defense and one from the offense over the last two weeks), the Calgary Stampeders bounced back in a big way from both sides of the football Friday night at McMahon Stadium.

In front of a solid crowd of 31, 167 fans, the Stamps trounced the Montreal Alouettes 46-21 in a battle of two first place teams.

As successfully predicted by Any Sport Any Time’s cricket expert Ron Saywack, the Stamps rebounded. Henry Burris had 412 passing yards–169 to Ken-Yon Rambo and 146 to Romby Bryant.
