Meghan Agosta (Wikimedia Commons)
Team Canada is back in the final of the Women’s World Hockey Championship. Friday afternoon in Burlington, Vermont, Meghan Agosta, Laura Fortino and Marie-Philip Poulin each scored a goal and an assist as Canada beat Finland 5-1 in the semi-final game.
Agosta, was a huge force on the Canadian side, notching nine shots on goal. Canada’s opponent tonight is once again the United States, who hammered Switzerland 10-0 in the other semi-final. The game can be seen live on TSN at 5pm.
Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:
Saturday–NHL Eastern Conference Quarterfinal Game 2–Washington Capitals @ Boston Bruins–NBC–1pm–The Capitals lost game 1 despite a brilliant goaltending performance by Braden Holtby. The Bruins meanwhile got a stingy defensive effort Thursday night as they only allowed 17 Washington shots in 61:18 of action. The Capitals simply won’t win many games in the series if Alexander Ovechkin only gets one shot. The Capitals sniper did record seven hits, but needs to find the offensive side of his game again. Tim Thomas is the only goaltender in the playoffs so far to get a shutout.

The Masters will obviously headline my television viewing this weekend with the very first major of the PGA Season. Currently Peter Hanson of Sweden (-5) leads U.S. Open Champion Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, former British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa, Ben Crane of the United States and day one leader Lee Westwood of England by a stroke.
Other players in contention are Major winners Zach Johnson, Jim Furyk and Paul Lawrie.
The television coverage for the tournament is Friday at 1pm on TSN, Saturday at 1:30pm on CBS, and Sunday at noon on CBS.
Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:
Friday–NLL–Rochester Knighthawks @ Calgary Roughnecks–7pm–I’m heading down to the Scotiabank Saddledome this evening to see the Roughnecks in National Lacrosse League action. At 10-3, the Roughnecks are tied for first place in the West Division with the Colorado Mammoth. The Roughnecks lead the NLL with 180 goals scored, are led by former Knighthawk Shawn Evans, who leads the team in scoring with 58 points.

Albert Pujols (Dave Herholz, Wikimedia Commons)
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have won the Albert Pujols sweepstakes. On Thursday, Pujols signed a 10 year contract worth $254 million.
Believe it or not but I think the Angels got him on a bargain price. Many baseball experts thought he would sign in the $30 million range.
Pujols, considered by many to be the best player in the game, had one of the best single game performances in baseball history in Game 3 of the World Series. He had three hone runs, five hits and six runs batted in.
Pujols, a first baseman, is a three-time National League Most Valuable Player and two-time World Series Champion. Last season he had 37 home runs, 99 runs batted in and a .299 batting average.
The Angels also signed C.J. Wilson from the Texas Rangers to a five year deal worth $78 million. Wilson, the ace of the Rangers staff, was 16-7, 206 strikeouts and an earned run average of 2.94.
The Miami Marlins, who were very interested in Pujols and Wilson, signed Mark Buehrle to a four year deal worth $58 million. Buehrle, will join his former manager Ozzie Guillen in south Florida. Last season Buehrle went 13-9, with 109 strikeouts ans an earned run average of 3.59.

Derek Holland (Wikimedia Commons)
The Texas Rangers have tied the World Series at two games apiece.
On Sunday, the Rangers got an unexpected brilliant pitching performance by Derek Holland, who threw eight and a third shutout innings in a 4-0 win over the Saint Louis Cardinals.
Holland had seven strikeouts, and only gave up two walks and two hits.
One night after having a masterful offensive performance, Albert Pujols went 0-for-4. Lance Berkman was the only Cardinal to get a base hit.
The turning point in the game came in the sixth inning when catcher Mike Napoli hit a three run home run that also scored David Murphy and Nelson Cruz.
Game five is tonight in Arlington. Former Toronto Blue Jay Chris Carpenter gets the start for St. Louis, while C.J. Wilson will start for Texas. Game six of the series goes Wednesday, with game seven, if necessary, on Thursday.

Finally, the National Hockey League in Winnipeg returns this weekend as the Jets host the Montreal Canadiens at the MTS Center (Sunday, CBC, 3PM). When the Phoenix Coyotes moved to Winnipeg on July 1, 1996, Manitoba sports fans have been circling this date on their calendar. Fifteen years later and they finally have their wish. Players that will become household Jets’ names will include Andrew Ladd, Dustin Byfuglien, Bryan Little, Blake Wheeler and Evander Kane.
The Canadiens (0-1) meanwhile got off to a slow start as they lost 2-0 to the Toronto Maple Leafs Thursday night at the Air Canada Centre. James Reimer was brilliant in posting a shutout.

Curtis Granderson (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
The New York Yankees (97-65) host the Detroit Tigers (95-67) and the Texas Rangers (96-66) host the Tampa Bay Rays (91-71) in the American League Divisional Playoff starting today.
I’m picking the Yankees in four games and the Rangers in four games.
In the Yankees/Tigers matchup, Justin Verlander had an outstanding year for Detroit and will win the Cy Young Award after going 24-5, 250 strikeouts, 57 walks, an earned run average of 2.40 and a no-hitter against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The number that concerns me though is that the Tigers failed to win in the two games he started against the Yankees. Verlander pitched relatively well, giving up only three runs in six innings each time, but the bottom line is that Detroit couldn’t beat the best team in the American League this season with their ace on the mound.
The Yankees have a strong offensive balanced attack led by Robinson Cano (.302, 28 HR, 118 RBIs), Derek Jeter (.297), Alex Rodriguez (.276, 16 HR, 62 RBIs), Curtis Granderson (41 HR, 119 RBIs) and Mark Teixeira (.248, 39 HR, 111 RBIs), and should get by Detroit with their sub-par pitching, because don’t forget after Verlander, the Tigers don’t have much either.

Alexi Ogando (Wikimedia Commons)
With the loss of ace Cliff Lee in the offseason to the Philadelphia Phillies due to free agency, many did not expect the Texas Rangers to be doing so well.
But they are, and currently lead the American League West by six games over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. A major reason for Texas’s success has been their starting pitching. C.J. Wilson, Matt Harrison, Alexi Ogando and Colby Lewis all have an earned run average under four, and Derek Holland has a respectable 118 strikeouts. Offensively, the Rangers have had great years from Michael Young, who is second in the American League with a .341 batting average, and Nelson Cruz, who has belted out 26 home runs.
Tonight, the Rangers (73-53) will play the Chicago White Sox (61-63) at the U.S. Cellular Field. The White Sox are five games back of the American League Central Division leading Detroit Tigers. Ogando (12-5, 102 K, 3.33 ERA) will start for Texas and John Danks (5-9, 99 K, 3.95 ERA) will start for Chicago. The game can be seen on WGN at 5pm this evening.
Here are the other events I’ll be keeping my eye on:
Sunday–10:30am–ATP–Western & Southern Financial Group Masters–CBS–In the final key tuneup prior to the United States Open in Flushing Meadows, New York, a week from Monday, the best men’s tennis players visit Cincinnati. In the men’s final, it is a repeat of the final of the Australian Open as Novak Djokovic of Serbia takes on Andy Murray of Great Britain. In Melbourne in January, Djokovic defeated Murray easily 6-4, 6-2, 6-3. Head-to-head, Djokovic has the 6-3 advantage. In 2011, Djokovic also beat Murray in the semi-finals at Rome, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6.
Sunday–2pm–WTA–Cincinnati Open-Sportsnet One–Unlike the men, the face of women’s tennis continues to be unpredictable. You never know what you’re going to get each and every week. This week in Cincinnati, Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic takes on Russia’s Maria Sharapova in a battle of former world number ones. Head-to-head, Sharapova leads 5-1, but they haven’t played since 2009.

The Texas Rangers were the talk of the American League last year as they surprised many by not only getting by the Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners to win the American League West to win the division, but getting by the New York Yankees to win the American League Championship Series in six games as well.
In comes third baseman Adrian Beltre from Boston and catcher Mike Napoli from the Los Angeles Angels (via Toronto) and out goes ace Cliff Lee to Philadelphia, designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero to Baltimore and closer Frank Francisco to Toronto. Beltre became expendable in Boston when they acquired first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and moved Kevin Youkilis to third. On paper Lee would obviously be the most significant loss, but don’t forget, he only joined the Rangers at the trade deadline last year, when Texas had a huge lead in the division.

Cody Ross (Bing Images)
First off, I would like to congratulate our captain John Short.
He has made the bold prediction for weeks that the Edmonton Eskimos will make the playoffs.
Well, there is only three weeks left in the 2010 CFL’s Regular Season, and the Eskimos, at 5-10 are currently in a playoff spot.
Can they hold off Winnipeg and British Columbia? Time will tell, but if the season was over today, the Eskimos would be punching their ticket for Regina in a Western semi-final showdown with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
