Oilers officially eliminated from postseason

Monday, April 22nd, 2013

For the seventh consecutive season, the Edmonton Oilers will not be playing in the postseason.

On Sunday evening the Oilers lost 3-1 to the Anaheim Ducks. The Oilers needed to win their final five games and get an immense amount of help from other teams to qualify for the postseason. They simply didn’t get it.

How bad is it for the Oilers now? Well, the Calgary Flames beat the Minnesota Wild 4-1 to pass the Oilers in the standings. To make matters worse, it was one of the Flames’ prospects, Mark Cundari, that led the Flames in scoring with a goal and an assist. Cundar was acquired by the Flames from the St. Louis Blues at the trade deadline for Jay Bouwmeester.

Also, the Oilers now have the longest current NHL streak of consecutive playoffs missed after the Toronto Maple Leafs clinched a playoff spot for the first time since 2004 after defeating the Ottawa Senators 4-1 on Saturday.

Edmonton has four more games left this season, and to many loyal fans the end of the season cannot come soon enough.

Flames upset Ducks 3-1 Friday

Saturday, April 20th, 2013

Miikka Kiprusoff (James Teterenko, Wikimedia Commons)

The Calgary Flames may be officially eliminated from the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs, however they are playing their best hockey of the season at the moment.

On Friday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome, veteran goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff was brilliant as he made 32 saves as the Flames defeated the Anaheim Ducks 3-1.

There is significant speculation that Kiprusoff might have played his very last game at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary. Kiprusoff, who won the Vezina Trophy in 2006, is expected to retire at the end of the regular season.

The belief that Kiprusoff might retire increased on Saturday when the Flames announced the re-signing of goaltender Joey MacDonald to a one year contract worth $925,000.

Michael Cammalleri led the Flames in scoring with two assists on Friday night as Calgary improved to 18-22-4 on the season, and their fourth win in the last five games.

Could the Flames finish ahead of the Oilers?

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

When the Edmonton Oilers hammered the Calgary Flames on April 3 at the Scotiabank Saddledome by a score of 8-2, it seemed extremely likely that the Oilers would finish ahead of the Flames this season for the first time since 2002-03.

At the time the Oilers were nine points ahead of the Flames and in a playoff spot in the Western Conference.

How times have changed. The Oilers have lost six straight contests and the Flames have now won four games after their 3-2 upset win over the Detroit Red Wings in Calgary last night. With the win, Calgary is now one point back of Edmonton.

It is unlikely that either the Flames or the Oilers will make the playoffs this season, as the Oilers are ten points back of the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Flames are 11 points out.

Flames play perfect road game Saturday in Edmonton

Saturday, April 13th, 2013

In what could have been the most complete game the Calgary Flames have had all season long, the Flames defeated the Edmonton Oilers 4-1 on Saturday night at Rexall Place in Edmonton.

According to TSN, rookies Sven Baertschi  of Bern, Switzerland and Maxwell Reinhart each scored their first of the season. For Reinhart, it was also the first goal of his National Hockey League career.

Baertschi was one of three Flames to have multi-point games, joining Tim Jackman and T.J. Brodie. Baerschi notched a goal and an assist, while Jackman and Brodie each recorded two assists.

Defenceman Dennis Wideman scored the game winning goal for the Flames at 1:55 on the power play from Jackman and Brodie.

Weekend Sports Preview–April 13-14–Masters, NHL & MLB

Saturday, April 13th, 2013

Tiger Woods (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

The biggest story heading into Saturday is Tiger Woods. According to CBS there was a possibility that Woods would be disqualified heading into the third round of the Masters (Saturday, CBS, 1:00 p.m.) for dropping his ball in an illegal area after his approach shot on the 15th hole hit the flag stick and went into the water. Woods apparently dropped his ball two yards back from where he should have dropped it.

However, according to ESPN, Woods was only given a two stroke penalty after officials reviewed the tape. Do you think Woods was given preferential treatment by officials because of his status or is a two-stroke penalty considered harsh enough? Please comment at www.anysportanytime.ca. One thing is for sure, and that is a major golf tournament with Tiger Woods boosts television ratings significantly more than a major golf tournament without him.

Oilers and Flames lose Saturday

Sunday, April 7th, 2013

Henrik Sedin (Orland Kurtenbach, Wikimedia Commons)

The Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames both lost on the road on Saturday. For Edmonton however, the loss was significantly more devastating as they try to qualify for a playoff spot in the Western Conference.

On Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles, Jeff Carter scored a goal and an assist as the Kings defeated the Oilers 4-1. With the loss, the Oilers remain three points back of the St. Louis Blues for eighth place in the Western Conference.

After a five game winning streak, the Oilers have now lost their last two games.

Meanwhile in Vancouver last night, the Canucks defeated the Calgary Flames 5-2. It was the Flames’ thirteenth consecutive loss on the road.

It was a milestone night for Canucks captain Henrik Sedin. In the second period, Sedin recorded his 600th career assist on the game winning goal by Alexandre Burrows. Sedin then added a second assist later in the second period on a goal by Alexander Edler, and a shorthanded goal with 11 seconds left in the game.

Oilers pound Flames 8-2

Thursday, April 4th, 2013

The Edmonton Oilers are red hot. In fact, with five straight wins, they’re the hottest team in the Northwest Division. On Tuesday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome Taylor Hall scored one goal and four assists as the Oilers beat the Calgary Flames 8-2.

After believe it or not a slow start for the Oilers after Devan Dubnyk gave up two goals on the first two Flames shots to Matt Stajan, the Oilers tied the score before the end of the period and then scored three times each in the second and third period.

The Oilers, playing with a full lineup, also got two goals each from Jordan Eberle and Nail Yakupov, and a goal from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins who also had three assists.

Oilers beat Flames 4-1 Monday

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

The Edmonton Oilers are in a playoff chase with 13 games left in the regular season. On Monday night in Edmonton, it was no April Fool’s joke. The Oilers were the more opportunistic team in defeating their provincial rival, the Calgary Flames by a score of 4-1 at Rexall Place.

Rookie defenceman Justin Schultz led the Oilers in scoring with a goal and two assists, while Taylor Hall, Ryan Jones and Nail Yakupov each had a goal and an assist in recording multi-point games themselves.

Like Saturday night in their win over Vancouver,  the Oilers got off to a great start by scoring on three of their first five shots.

Flames trade Bouwmeester to Blues

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

Jay Bouwmeester (Wikimedia Commons)

It is safe to say that the Calgary Flames are officially in a time of transition, and yes Flames fans, you got what you are looking for and that is the start of a massive rebuilding process.

On Monday night prior to the Flames 4-1 loss to Edmonton, Calgary traded their most coveted defenceman in Jay Bouwmeester to the St. Louis  Blues for two prospects and  a conditional draft pick.

The prospects are Swiss goaltender Reto Berra and former Windsor Spitfire defenceman Mark Cundari. The conditional draft choice meanwhile is dependent on whether or not the Blues make the playoffs this season. If the Blues do not go to the playoffs in 2013, the Flames get the Blues’ number four pick in 2013 and then their number one pick in 2014.

In 33 games this season, Bouwmeester has six goals and nine assists for 15 points, but is a -11. However he is extremely valuable for his endurance because he has not missed a game since the 2005 lockout.

Weekend Sports Preview–Easter Edition–NHL, March Madness, World Curling Championships, NBA, MLB and Tennis

Saturday, March 30th, 2013

We’re coming to the second busiest sports month of the year. April. Where has March gone? I know.

Anyways. It is a huge weekend for the Edmonton Oilers as they will be hosting their two western Canadian foes– the Vancouver Canucks tonight (CBC, 8:00 p.m.) and the Calgary Flames on Easter Monday (Sportsnet, 7:30 p.m.).

With 15 games left on the schedule, the Oilers are three points back of the St. Louis Blues for a playoff spot. That means every five games, they will have to pick up a point on the Blues, and hope they are slightly better than three other teams that are in front of them– the Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars and Nashville Predators.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Iginla a Penguin and not a Bruin

Thursday, March 28th, 2013

Jarome Iginla (Wikimedia Commons)

It appears Jarome Iginla is not going to Boston after all. In an amazing turn of events, the Calgary Flames have said no to the Bruins and yes to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

According to TSN, the Flames traded Iginla to Pittsburgh for college prospects Kenneth Agostino and Ben Hanowski and the Penguins’ first round draft choice.

It appears on the surface that a major reason why Flames General Manager Jay Feaster went with the Penguins offer over the Bruins is because the Flames received a guaranteed first overall pick from Pittsburgh. In the trade that was incorrectly reported by the media earlier in the evening, the Flames would only had received the first round pick from the Bruins if Iginla re-signed with the Bruins next year. Either way, Feaster will have a lot of explaining to do, as will TSN’s Aaron Ward who first announced the deal.

Iginla was a hot commodity because he was an unrestricted free agent.

This is the second time in Iginla’s career he has been involved in a blockbuster transaction. He was traded to Calgary from Dallas for Joe Nieuwendyk in 1995.

Weekend Sports Preview–March 23-24–Women’s World Curling Championship, March Madness & NHL

Friday, March 22nd, 2013

After a respectable week, Team Canada finished the round robin in the Women’s World Curling Championship with a respectable 8-3 record. However, the three teams they lost to in the round robin (the United States, Scotland and Sweden) will be the three teams they will need to beat to win their first Women’s World Curling Championship since 2008.

Ontario’s Rachel Homan’s first test will be the United States (Saturday, 6:00 a.m.). If they win that game, they will have to play Scotland in the semi-final (Saturday, 11:00 a.m.) and then Sweden in the final (Sunday, 6:00 a.m.).

Underwood excited as Predators beat Flames 5-3

Friday, March 22nd, 2013

Carrie Underwood (Kyle Dupuis, Wikimedia Commons)

There is a strong possibility that American country music star Carrie Underwood was a happy woman last night.

Not only did she perform in Richmond, Virginia, but her husband, Mike Fisher, the Nashville Predators centre scored two goals in a 5-3 win over the Calgary Flames.

On Underwood’s twitter account, she stated, “twas a great night indeed!…back home the hubby scored TWO goals!”

It was also a great night for the NHL as anytime you have Underwood tweeting about hockey, it is a great thing.

The Predators also had a strong night from Martin Erat (one goal and two assists), while defencemen Roman Josi and Kevin Klein had two assists each. Klein and rookie defenceman Victor Bartley of Ottawa, Ontario were each a +3.

The Flames lost despite notching two shorthanded goals in the first period from Mark Giordano and Blake Comeau.

Stars beat Flames 4-3 Monday

Tuesday, March 19th, 2013

The Dallas Stars got a great first period en route to a 4-3 win over the Calgary Flames on Monday.

Former Edmonton Oiler Erik Cole, former Calgary Flame Eric Nystrom and Loui Eriksson scored for Dallas in a span of five minutes in the opening period to give the Stars a 3-0 lead.

The Flames marched back in the second period with a pair of their own before Eriksson sealed the game for the Stars with a game winning goal with 8:30 left.
