Bandits win RBC Cup Sunday

Sunday, May 19th, 2013

The Brooks Bandits have won the RBC Cup on Sunday, marking the first time since 2001 the champion came from the province of Alberta.

The Bandits defeated the Summerside Western Capitals 3-1 in Summerside, Prince Edward Island to win the Canadian Junior Hockey League national championship.

It was simply a magical year for Brooks, who only lost four regulation games in 60 Alberta Junior Hockey League regular season games this season.

Brooks won the AJHL Gas Drive Cup Final over the Spruce Grove Saints before losing the 2013 Western Canada Cup to the Surrey Eagles. Then this week at the RBC Cup, the Bandits only loss came to the Capitals in round robin play where they lost 3-1 on Tuesday.

Oilers have six games left, does anyone care?

Monday, March 26th, 2012

The Edmonton Oilers won yesterday and yipee (sarcastically) they moved from 29th to 28th in the NHL Standings, past the lowly Montreal Canadiens.

Yesterday they scored six times, albeit against the immensely defensively inept Columbus Blue Jackets, scoring five times in the second period alone on one year wonder Steve Mason who has done nothing in the National Hockey League since his stellar rookie year in 2008-09.

Then the Blue Jackets brought in former Camrose Kodiak product Allen York in for the third period, who played rather well.

Ok, the Oilers might have scored six times, but Oilers fans have simply no reason to celebrate.  It has been an atrocious season for a club expected to contend for a playoff spot by now rather than see the six remaining games against Dallas, Vancouver and two each against Anaheim and Los Angeles have no real significance whatsoever. Wake me up when this team contends. For now, I feel their development is going at snail’s pace like that of the Islanders than the expedient progress of Chicago and Pittsburgh a few years ago.
