Lawton and Stoughton win Canada Cup

Jeff Stoughton of Winnipeg and Stefanie Lawton of Saskatoon have advanced to the 2013 Canadian Olympic Curling Trials in Winnipeg from December 1-8 at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg.

In a very strong defensive battle, Stoughton defeated Ontario’s Glenn Howard 4-3 in the men’s Canada Cup Final Sunday in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. The game had four blank ends before Stoughton recorded a single point in the final end. Jon Mead, who plays third, led the Stoughton team by shooting 91%.

Lawton, meanwhile beat Team Jennifer Jones by a score of 6-4 in the women’s Canada Cup final   to advance to the ladies’ tournament. The Saskatchewan skip scored two key points in the third end to take control of the game.

Manitoba has great day in curling

The first day is now complete at the Canada Cup of Curling in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and it was a great day for three Manitoba-based teams.

Winnipeg-based skips Mike McEwen and Jeff Stoughton are each 2-0 on the men’s side, while Kaitlyn Lawes of Winnipeg is tied with Stefanie Lawton of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan at 2-0 on the women’s side.

Flames name Hartsburg associate coach

The Calgary Flames now have someone to work alongside head coach Brent Sutter.

On Monday, the Flames announced the hiring of Craig Hartsburg as their associate coach. Hartsburg played with Sutter at the 1987 Canada Cup where Canada beat Russia in Hamilton.

Hartsburg was also Sutter’s assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2006 World Junior Hockey Championships where Canada beat Russia 5-0 in the gold medal game in Vancouver. Sutter was also a player for the Chicago Blackhawks from 1995-98 while Hartsburg was the head coach.

Hartsburg, has also spent time as the head coach of the Anaheim Ducks and Ottawa Senators in his coaching career in the National Hockey League. He has also spent time as an assistant with the Minnesota North Stars and Philadelphia Flyers.

For the past two years, Hartsburg has been the head coach of the Everett Silvertips in the Western Hockey League, composing a record of 74-54-16. He has also coached the Guelph Storm and Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the Ontario Hockey League as well.
