Jeter out for the 2012 MLB postseason

The rest of the 2012 Major League Baseball postseason will not have New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter.

In an amazing scene Saturday night at Yankee Stadium for game one of the American League Championship Series, Jeter dove for a ground ball, fell awkwardly on the ground and could not get up. In fact, Jeter needed the assistance of manager Joe Girardi to get back to the dugout.

The diagnosis was a broken ankle and yesterday the announcement was made that Jeter will be out for the remainder of the playoffs.

The Yankees have now activated Eduardo Nunez and will start former Toronto Blue Jay Jayson Nix at shortstop.

Currently the Yankees are trailing Detroit 2-0 in the American League Championship Series. Yesterday the Tigers won 3-0 on a brilliant pitching performance by Anibal Sanchez. The Yankees bats are currently frozen. They only had four hits yesterday afternoon.

Weekend Sports Preview–CFL & MLB

Saturday, July 14th, 2012

A battle of the last two undefeated teams  in the Canadian Football League will take to the field today at Mosaic Stadium in Regina.

The 2-0 Saskatchewan Roughriders will host the 2-0 British Columbia Lions (Saturday, 1pm, TSN).

The Roughriders have outscored the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Edmonton Eskimos a combined 60-17, while the Lions have outscored the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Winnipeg Blue Bombers 72-52.

This will be a contest between the Lions offense versus the Roughriders defense. If Geroy Simon and Arland Bruce III are able to expolit Craig Butler and Chris Mackenzie, the Lions should have a good day.

Giants acquire Beltran

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

Carlos Beltran (Bing Images)

The San Francisco Giants significantly improved their outfield late last night with the acquisition of outfielder Carlos Beltran from the New York Mets for pitching prospect Zack Wheeler.

After an abundance of injuries, mostly knee issues over the last few years, Beltran has performed admirably in 2011, batting .289 with 15 home runs and 66 runs batted in. He is getting up in age a little at 34, but has shown this year he still has offensive skills.

Beltran should fit in nicely in centerfield where the Giants haven’t received great production this year from Andres Torres (.235, 3 HR, 18 RBIs) and Aaron Rowand (.244, 4 HR, 20 RBIs).

The Giants currently lead the Arizona Diamondbacks by three games in the National League West.

With Wheeler, the Mets are receiving a top prospect that has an effective curveball and a fastball at 95 miles per hour. But my motto is Wheeler is only a prospect. There was a lot of hype about Stephen Strasburg a year ago too.

In another move Thursday, the Cleveland Indians have acquired Japanese outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (.273, 3 HR, 13 RBIs) from the Chicago Cubs for prospects and cash. The Indians have struggled lately, going 3-7 in their last ten games, and were no-hit yesterday by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim starter Johan Santana.

Romero added to American League for MLB All-Star Game

Monday, July 11th, 2011

Ricky Romero (Mike Cassese, Reuters Media)

Ricky Romero, the ace for the Toronto Blue Jays, has been added to the roster of the American League for tomorrow night’s mid-Summer classic in Phoenix, Arizona.

Romero replaces Jon Lester of the Boston Red Sox, who is currently on the disabled list because of a back injury.

Romero, deserved to be an All-Star in the first place. Despite his 7-8 record, he had a strong 3.09 earned run average, to go along with 101 strikeouts and 45 walks in 122 1/3 innings. He has also given up fewer hits (106), than innings pitched, another indicator for a solid start to the season.

The Blue Jays’ first round pick in the 2005 Entry Draft, Romero has pitched well despite missing some time with an oblique injury.

In other baseball news, former Toronto Blue Jay Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies (11-3, 2.45 ERA) will start for the National League and Jered Weaver of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (11-4, 1.86 ERA) will start for the American League.

Carlos Beltran (.285, 15 HR, 58 RBIs) of the New York Mets has been selected as the starting designated hitter in the National League.
