Tuesday, February 12th, 2013

According to the Associated Press, the International Olympic Committee has decided to drop wrestling from the 2020 Olympic Games.

Wrestling has been on the Olympic program every year since the 1896 Olympic Games in Athens, with the exception of the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris.

The 2020 Olympic Games will either be in Istanbul, Turkey, Madrid, Spain or Tokyo, Japan. A decision will be made at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina on September 7.

Huynh wins Olympic Bronze

Wednesday, August 8th, 2012

Carol Huynh (Mike Ridewood, Canadian Olympic Committee)

Carol Huynh (pronounced win) of New Hazelton, British Columbia has won Canada’s 14th medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Huynh, who currently lives in Calgary, defeated Isabelle Sambou of Senegal 1-0, 1-0 in each round by a sudden death clinch in the women’s 48 kilogram freestyle wrestling bronze medal match.

After each round went to a scoreless draw in regulation, Huynh got lucky each time and had her blue ball selected to have the opportunity to be in a favourable wrestling hold position. With Sambou’s leg having to be forward, it gave Huynh the opportunity to grab Sambou’s lower limb and score the necessary point each time.

Canada’s Pan American Gold count at 18

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

Carol Huynh (Ewan Nicholson)

Even though Canada has had 71 medals at the Pan American Games to date (third overall behind the United States and Brazil), it has been a little quiet on the Gold medal front over the last three days.

Since Saturday, Canada has only recorded four gold medals, after having fourteen over the first seven days of competition.

In women’s wrestling, Carol Huynh, who has been featured in Prospect Magazine’s Words from the Next Level, successfully defended her Pan American Gold medal from 2007 in Rio de Janeiro. She defeated Clarissa Chun of the United States in the women’s 48kg on Saturday.

In men’s 10km open water swimming event, Richard Weinberger of Victoria, British Columbia won Gold in a very close race. He only beat American Arthur Frayler by .3 seconds in posting a time of 1:57:31.

Then on Sunday, Whitney McClintock of Cambridge, Ontario won a Gold medal in the women’s tricks water skiing competition, destroying her nearest rivals. She defeated Silver medallist Maria Linares of Colombia by 990 points after recording 8390 total points.

Finally in equestrian, Jessica Phoenix of Uxbridge, Ontario won Gold in individual eventing on Sunday. Eventing includes dressage, cross-country and individual jumping.
