Chiefs linebacker involved in murder-suicide

Saturday, December 1st, 2012

Jovan Belcher (Jeffrey Beall, Wikimedia Commons)

According to the Associated Press, Kansas City Chiefs’  linebacker Jovan Belcher was involved in a murder suicide on Saturday.

Belcher was reportedly arguing with his girlfriend Saturday morning before shooting her. He then allegedly drove to Chiefs’ practice complex, and thanked Chiefs’ General Manager Scott Pioli and Head Coach Romeo Crennel, before committing suicide.

Belcher and his girlfriend Kassandra Perkins, leave behind a three month old daughter.

Belcher was in his fourth year as the Chiefs’ linebacker. Undrafted, Belcher signed with the Chiefs in 2009 and had 193 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble.

It appears the Chiefs  home game against the Carolina Panthers will be played tomorrow in Kansas City despite the tragedy. Do you agree or do you think the National Football League should have a period of grief so the Chiefs can be ready to play from a mental standpoint?

Week 11 NFL Picks

Sunday, November 18th, 2012

Felix Jones (Chuck Kennedy, Wikimedia Commons)

Another lousy week this year left me at 6-7-1 in week 10 and 85-60-1 overall heading into week 11.

On Thursday night, Rian Lindell kicked four field goals and the Buffalo Bills defense came up huge in a 19-14 win over Miami. The Bills and Dolphins now share 4-6 records in the AFC East.

Here are my week 11 picks:

11am

Atlanta over Arizona–The Falcons will bounce back after a tough loss to the Saints rather easily.

Dallas over Cleveland–The Cowboys running game got things going against the Eagles, and Felix Jones could have a big day against the Browns.

Green Bay over Detroit–The Packers might just be the best team in the NFC went it is done, as other teams ahead of them are reeling.

Tom Brady (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

I am 80-53 on the season following Indianapolis’ 27-10 win over Jacksonville Thursday night. The Colts played excellent defense with Darius Butler leading the way with two interceptions, one for an eleven yard touchdown early in the second half.

Here are my Week 10 picks:

11am

NY Giants over Cincinnati–The Bengals D has been horrible over the last three weeks.

Luck breaks NFL record in Colts win over Dolphins

Monday, November 5th, 2012

Andrew Luck (Mark Susina, Wikimedia Commons)

Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Andrew Luck is now in the record books. Sunday, Luck broke the NFL record for most passing yards by a rookie quarterback in a single game as the Indianapolis Colts defeated the Miami Dolphins 23-20.

Luck threw for 433 yards and broke Cam Newton’s record for most passing yards in a game. Newton set the NFL rookie record last year by throwing 432 yards in a 30-23 Carolina loss to Green Bay last season.  Indianapolis improves to 5-3, while Miami drops to 4-4.

In other NFL action, Isaac Redman ran for 147 yards as the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the New York Giants 24-20. The Giants had a short week of practice because of Hurricane Sandy and the storm was strong enough to cause severe flooding in Eli Manning’s New Jersey home. The Steelers improve to 5-3, while the Giants drop to 6-3.

Meanwhile,  Doug Martin is starting to become quite possibly the best running back in the NFL. He  was outstanding Sunday as he set Buccaneers records for most rushing yards in a game (251) and most rushing touchdowns in a game (four) as Tampa Bay beat Oakland 42-32.

Rodgers named NFL MVP

Sunday, February 5th, 2012

Aaron Rodgers (Bing Images)

Last night in the Super Bowl, festivities, the National Football League had an event that simulated something that has taken place in the Canadian Football League for years– an awards show immediately prior to the Championship game.

On Saturday, Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers was named NFL MVP. Rodgers won 48 of a possible 50 votes. The Packer quarterback led Green Bay to a 15-1 regular season record and led all quarterbacks with a 122.5 quarterback rating.

Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints was named the top offensive player. Brees set the NFL record this past season with 5476 passing yards and also led the NFL with 46 touchdown passes.

Other award winners were Terrell Suggs of the Baltimore Ravens for top defensive player, Detroit Lions’ quarterback Matt Stafford for comeback player of the year, San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh won Coach of the Year, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton for NFL Offensive  Rookie of the Year and Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Dolphins acquire Bush

Friday, July 29th, 2011

Reggie Bush (Bing Images)

The Miami Dolphins have acquired running back Reggie Bush from the New Orleans Saints for safety Jonathan Amaya and an undisclosed pick.

Bush, who was scheduled to make $11.8 million under his old contract with the Saints, signed a 2 year deal worth $9.75 million with the Dolphins, with a $2.5 million signing bonus.

Bush couldn’t seem to be comfortable throughout his career in New Orleans. He regularly shared running back duties. Last year it was with Christopher Ivory and Pierre Thomas.

But ironically, don’t expect him to be carrying the majority of the load in Miami either, especially if the Dolphins look to re-sign either Ricky Williams or Ronnie Brown.

One area where Bush is strong is his versatility, as he is regularly able to catch the ball in short yardage situations. He actually has more receiving yards in his career (2142) than rushing yards (2090).

Amaya played in ten games in his rookie season for the Dolphins in 2010, and collected fifteen solo tackles.

As for the quarterback position, the Dolphins signed Matt Moore from the Carolina Panthers today to a two year deal worth $5 million. He will be competing with Chad Henne for the number one spot in Miami.

Ochocinco traded to the Patriots

Friday, July 29th, 2011

Chad Ochocinco (Ken LaRock, Wikimedia Commons)

The New England Patriots have done what?

That is the question all over the world wide web and twitter today.

Hours after acquiring controversial defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth from the Washington Redskins yesterday, Patriots’ head coach Bill Belichick acquired controversial wide receiver Chad Ochocinco from the Cincinnati Bengals for a fifth round pick in 2012 and a sixth round pick in 2013.

Ochcocinco played ten years with the Bengals  and holds the team records for 66 career touchdown receptions, 10,783 career receiving yards and the most receiving yards in a season with 1,440 that was set in 2007. He also represented the AFC six times in the Pro Bowl.

One reason why Ochocinco is controversial is  because he participates in questionable touchdown celebrations, and has never been afraid to express his opinions on twitter. How long will it take Belichick to ban that Ochocinco pastime?

For those interested, ocho cinco means 85 (Chad Ochocinco’s number) in Spanish.

In another NFL trade,  the Chicago Bears have traded tight end Greg Olsen to the Carolina Panthers for a third round pick in 2012.

Eagles select Canadian Danny Watkins in 1st round

Friday, April 29th, 2011

Danny Watkins (Chris Trotman, Getty Images)

Ok. I don’t blame if you didn’t watch the NFL Draft. With an interesting evening in the NHL and NBA, the NFL Draft definitely played the third fiddle.

I wasn’t all that interested to see who was going to go number one (the Carolina Panthers drafted Heisman Trophy winning QB Cam Newton out of Auburn first overall), but where Kelowna firefighter Danny Watkins out of Baylor would end up. Watkins, 26, was one of the oldest players in the draft.

Watkins didn’t play high school football, and went to Baylor after spending five years in the Kelowna Fire Department, starting at the age of 17.

While furthering his career while studying fire science at Butte College in Sacramento, a classmate recommended he try football. At 6’4″, 310 pounds,  he would instantly become a fantastic offensive lineman and would soon end up at Baylor.

A first round draft pick of the British Columbia Lions last year, Watkins decided to play his final year at Baylor and test the NFL waters. The Philadelphia Eagles drafted Watkins, an offensive guard in the first round, 23rd overall, last night.

T-O-E-S TOES!

There’s no question that above all else, the NY Jets have been one thing this year: Controversial.

That trend continued this week, with the latest episode involving coach Rex Ryan! This one isn’t so much a controversy in the way that the Brett Favre sexts, the treatment of a female reporter at Jets practice or the ‘sideline trip’ were – this one is more just a fairly embarrassing thing that has come to light.

One thing it does have in common with the Favre text story though is that it was brought to us by the website Deadspin.

Without further ado, here’s the scoop: A series of foot fetish videos have surfaced that appear to star a woman who looks a lot like Rex Ryan’s wife Michelle. The guy working the camera in one of the videos even sounds kind of like Ryan. The similarities between “Ihaveprettyfeet” and Michelle Ryan don’t seem to end there – both are 47-year-old housewives, both have a master’s degree and both once lived in Ellicott City, Maryland.
