The Hoop & The Harm: NBA Lockout Looms

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

It looks like it’s going to be a long summer for NBA fans!

The collective bargaining agreement between the league and its players expires today, which will more than likely signify the beginning of the second big pro sports lockout in North America this year. The two sides are meeting for one last bargaining session today, but the word on the street is that they are still very far apart on a number of issues, and a work stoppage is almost inevitable at this point.

What are the issues? Just like in the NFL labor situation and the NHL one before it, the owners say the players are making too much money and are earning too big a share of overall league revenues. Other issues plaguing the NBA process are the owners desire for a “hard” salary cap to control spending and non-guaranteed contracts, which players are staunchly opposed to. So, despite any progress that was made in the past month or so, there is seemingly still a long way to go. (more…)

Kerrzy’s Notebook: Coyotes Staying Put

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

Just when you thought it might be time to bring out the U-Haul’s, the Phoenix Coyotes are staying in Glendale…at least for now.

Despite the fact that the team lost a reported $37-million this season and hundreds of millions of dollars overall since moving from Winnipeg to Arizona, the NHL is standing firm in its belief that the NHL-owned club has a future in the state, even if it means being owned by the NHL for another 10 years.

That’s right – after telling us a couple of months ago that “time is running out” on the potential sale of the Coyotes to a buyer who would keep the team in Glendale, the city and the NHL have agreed to extend the “deadline” for another full season. Just like in the last agreement, the city will put aside $25-million to cover the team’s losses in the event that they still can’t find an owner by this time next year.

I hope the NHL didn’t forget its yoga mat, because it’s bending over backwards for the city of Glendale when it should really be the other way around, shouldn’t it? (more…)

Where’s Poonam?

Indian model Poonam Pandey became a household name overnight last week because of a promise she made during the Cricket World Cup – it’s a week later though, and people in India are wondering when she’ll be living up to that promise!

Pandey faced a ton of controversy last week when she said she would strip for the Indian cricket team if they managed to win the World Cup. Ever since the team’s Saturday triumph over Sri Lanka though, the people have been wondering: Where is Poonam?

(AFTER THE JUMP: Rangers playoff hopes ‘Gone in 15 Seconds,’ plus Ducks’ Perry hits 50-goal mark)… (more…)

Another First

Edmonton Oilers fans witnessed another “first” in Taylor Hall’s young career on Thursday night.

The rookie had a goal and an assist in a 4-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets and also got into his first NHL fight! With just under 6:30 to go in the second period, Hall completed the “Gordie Howe Hat Trick” when he shed the mitts with Columbus’ Derek Dorsett late in the first period.

It was quite the sequence: Hall came charging out of the penalty box and completely undressed defenseman Fedor Tyutin down the right wing, but missed the net. He then clipped Matt Calvert with a hit near the blue line, which drew the attention of Dorsett and it was actually Hall that initiated the tilt! (more…)

Polamalu’s Hair: Week Twenty-One Notes

Hair We Go!

When the current NFL season started back in September, there were 32 teams getting ready for what they hoped (realistically or not) would be a championship season.

Heading into the last weekend of January only two teams remain though, as the Pittsburgh Steelers get set to face the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XLV in Dallas, Texas. Now, if you think the big story here is Ben Roethlisberger vs. Aaron Rodgers, I regret to inform you that you are absolutely wrong.

No, there is a much bigger battle being waged on February 6th: That would be the one between Head & Shoulders and Suave.

That’s right folks, the flowing locks of Pittsburgh’s Troy Polamalu (our hero here in the football division of Kerrzy’s Notebook) will go “head to head” with the golden mane of Green Bay’s Clay Matthews on that fateful Sunday. (more…)

Vote of Confidence

As a child I was led to believe by my schoolyard chums that Wednesday was ‘opposite day,’ at least when it suited whatever it was we were talking about…So I ask you, what is the opposite of a vote of confidence?

Lets let LA Clippers point guard Baron Davis take this one; he’s probably used to hearing it from the fans when he’s not playing well (like right now) but he, of all people, can take it a step further as his team’s owner has taken up heckling him! (more…)
