Steele and Dufner lead PGA Championship

The 2011 PGA Championship in Atlanta is becoming more and more like the 2003 PGA Championship at the Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York.

That year the no name Shaun Micheel defeated the no name Chad Campbell by two strokes at -4 to take the title.

In 2011, we have the names of Jason Dufner, Brendan Steele and Keegan Bradley, all Americans that are basically no names on the PGA Tour, leading the pack. Dufner, from Cleveland, is at -7 and at the age of 34, has never won on a PGA Tour event. Like Serena Williams in the WTA, Dufner is ranked 80th in the world, and making noise this weekend.

Dufner is tied at the top of the leaderboard with Steele, ranked 121st in the world. Unlike Dufner however, Steele has one career win, which came at the Valero Texas Open in April. Steele is a familiar name to Edmonton golf fans, as he finished second at the 2006 Telus Edmonton Open to American Stephen Gangluff.

Weekend Sports Preview–July 23-24–Edmonton Indy, RBC Canadian Golf Open, Stamps & Esks, MLB, Senior British Golf Open

Over the last two years, some of the most interesting IndyCar races have happened in Edmonton. Two years ago, Brazilian Tony Kanaan suffered first and second degree burns to his body when a splash of fuel got into his cockpit and ignited him and his car.

Then last year, Brazilian Helio Castroneves, who was the leader after 92 laps, was black flagged for blocking on the restart and finished tenth. The eventual winner was New Zealand’s Scott Dixon, the 2008 Indianapolis 500 winner.

Fast forward to 2011, where Dario Franchitti of Scotland has been the driver so far on the IndyCar circuit. He won two weeks ago in Toronto, and has also won in St. Petersburg, Florida and Milwaukee. He leads Australian Will Power by 55 points.

Organizers have changed the layout of the 2011 Edmonton Indy, giving competitors more opportunities to pass.

The race starts Sunday at 12:45pm on TSN.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Saturday & Sunday–10am–Senior British Open–TSN–I wasn’t go to watch this, but now I will. Rod Spittle of St. Catharines, Ontario is the co-leader with Americans Mark Calcavecchia and Lee Rinker. Spittle shot a -5 on Friday to tie for the lead at -7. The emergence of Spittle, 56 years of age, is remarkable because he never played on the PGA Tour. He won the Canadian Amateur in 1977 and 1978, but decided to sell insurance instead of turning professional. Now he is one of the world’s top senior golfers.

With the RBC Canadian Open taking place this weekend at the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club, I don’t think too many people expected the biggest Canadian golf news to be at a tournament other than the most significant golf tournament on Canadian soil.

But that is what happened today.

Rod Spittle of St. Catherines, Ontario is tied for the lead with Americans Mark Calcavecchia and Lee Rinker at the British Senior Open at Walton on the Hill, Surrey, England.

Spittle, who turned 56 years old four days ago, has one Champions Tour victory to his credit, the AT&T Championship in San Antonio, Texas last October.

Among the three, Calcavecchia is by far the most notable name, having won the 1989 British Open.
