This week on (the award-nominated) 15MOF we look back on the highs and lows of UFC 158 in Montreal, we decide whether or not the Edmonton Oilers are going to make the playoffs and we highlight another world class performance from Leo Messi and Barcelona in Champions League play.
In the GABBYs: the UFC, the Orlando Predators, Zach Sikich, Giorgos Katidis, Renaldo Balkman, Michael Taylor and Grambling State. The Punchline this week is a college hoops fan who missed out on $50,000.
Jose Mourinho was nowhere to be seen on Tuesday at the Camp Nou in Barcelona, Spain, but his words from a week earlier resonated as the final whistle sounded.
With their coach serving what many likely saw as an unjust ban, Real Madrid played to a 1-1 draw with Barcelona in the second leg of the all-Spanish Champions League semifinal, a result that sent Barca through to the big dance for the second time in three years. Did they deserve to go through though?
Probably – there’s no question that the Leo Messi led team is one of the world’s most elite clubs, stocked to the brim with extreme talent. That said, I could hardly watch as they played their own brand of “negative football” to perfection and, to boot, once again benefited from a suspect call by the referee that changed the course of the action. We all expected a show, and boy did we get one this week – the latest clash between Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid was so good, the fireworks are still flying days later!
If you missed it: the first leg of their Champions League semifinal featured sideline scuffles, fouls (and dives) and a straight red card, which was followed by a pair of magnificent goals to give Barca a 2-0 road win. Leo Messi was the star of the game, but it was Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho stealing the show afterwards!
“The Special One” was all wound up about the Pepe red card in the 61st minute of what was then a 0-0 game. The Brazilian defender lunged for the ball with his studs up and appeared to clip Barca’s Dani Alves, who had to be taken off on a stretcher, but we’ll get to the foul itself in a moment…(After the break: VIDEO of the Pepe foul/dive, plus a Danish coach hits a reporter & more!) The same week he called his job “thankless,” Colin Campbell is out with another head-scratcher!
The NHL’s head disciplinarian went off on TSN Radio about how he feels a bit disrespected by all of the criticism he is facing, especially now that we’re into the playoffs. I can kind of see why he’d be rattled because he has definitely been active in punishing players who break the rules lately, handing out five suspensions in the last week and a half or so. That said, I think we’re all a bit miffed about a few of his calls so far.
Case and point: the Raffi Torres hit on Brent Seabrook…(After the jump: The latest NHL suspension, Real Madrid puts their mark on the Spanish Cup & MORE!) (more…)
Now that the NFL has officially locked out its players, one guy is putting football aside to try his hand at…football!
Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco is taking this opportunity to give a childhood passion of his another go, suiting up for a four-day trial with Major League Soccer’s Sporting Kansas City. Yes, the man who once raced (and beat) a horse is now trying to make it in soccer!
Here’s the crazy part: Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star says he’s actually a pretty good player!
According to reports, his first day on the pitch didn’t blow anyone away, but as he works off the rust and gets more comfortable, Ochocinco is starting to look like he belongs out there. Coach Peter Vermes commented afterwards that he’s “alright” at some things and “far behind” at others, but either way they’ll probably decide this weekend what to do with him. (more…)
The round of 16 got underway in UEFA Champions League action this week, but not without some controversy right off the hop!
Over here at Kerrzy’s Notebook, we love controversy, so lets give a round of applause to AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso who will likely face some swift punishment for his actions in a 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspurs at the San Siro on Tuesday.
ESPN Soccernet reports that Spurs assistant manager Joe Jordan was giving it to Gattuso from the sidelines during the second half when the player lost the plot and struck him in the facial region. I say “facial region” because I’ve seen it reported that Gattuso “grabbed him by the throat,” you could almost call it a punch, but in reality it was an open-handed face push (if such a term exists). Obviously the trash talk got to him because the two locked horns again after the game, which resulted in a minor head butt being delivered by the Italian. (more…)
