Couture leads Sharks to playoff win over Kings

Sunday, May 19th, 2013

The San Jose Sharks are now back in their series with the Los Angeles Kings in the Western Conference semi-final.

Saturday evening in northern California, the Sharks got an overtime winner from Logan Couture in a 2-1 win over the Kings, but the Kings still lead the series 2-1.

The Sharks got their goal on the power play in overtime after Trevor Lewis was called on goaltender interference late in the third period. The call upset Kings’ goaltender Jonathan Quick, who slammed his stick across his goal post after the game.

Victoria Day Weekend Sports Preview–May 18-20–NHL, NBA, MLB, Horse Racing & World Hockey Championships

Sidney Crosby (Michael Miller, Wikimedia Commons)

Wayne Gretzky is the greatest hockey player of all-time. Heck, he is also the greatest athlete of all-time. But I think it is safe to say that right now Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins is the best hockey player in the world right now.

On Friday night, Crosby showed just why he is so great. In a dominating performance, Crosby had a hat trick by the early portion of the second period in a 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators in game two of the Eastern Conference semi-final that put the Penguins up 2-0 in the best-out-of-seven series.

Crosby will now have the opportunity to showcase his skills north of the border this weekend as Pittsburgh travels to Ottawa for game three of the Eastern Conference semi-final (Sunday, CBC, 5:30 p.m.). I know the Penguins are loaded with talent that includes Evgeni Malkin and Jarome Iginla, but the bottom line is when healthy Pittsburgh is Crosby’s team.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching:

Saturday–MLB–New York Mets @ Chicago Cubs–WPIX–11:00 a.m.–Two teams in fourth place in their divisions play today at Wrigley Field. The Cubs are 17-24 in the National League Central, while the Mets are 16-23 in the National League East. First baseman Anthony Rizzo, who represented Italy at the World Baseball Classic, with nine home runs, 29 runs batted in and a .522 slugging percentage. While so far this season, the Mets have been led by third baseman David Wright, who leads the team with a .312 batting average, .418 on base percentage and a .536 slugging percentage.

Blackhawks dominate third period in win over Red Wings

Thursday, May 16th, 2013

Patrick Sharp (Wikimedia Commons)

The Chicago Blackhawks have taken a 1-0 lead over the Detroit Red Wings in the Western Conference semi-final.

Wednesday evening at the United Center in Chicago, Patrick Sharp had a goal and two assists as the Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-1.

After a relatively even first forty minutes, the Blackhawks completely dominated the third period, outscoring the Red Wings 3-0 in the final frame. Chicago also outshot Detroit 19-9 over the final twenty minutes.

A big goal for Chicago came with 8:37 left in the game. With the Blackhawks leading 2-1, Chicago got a goal from their fourth line as Marcus Kruger scored from Daniel Carcillo. When you know your fourth line is producing offensively, you know thngs are going very well.

The Blackhawks also got solid goaltending from Corey Crawford, who made 20 saves. The Blackhawks and Red Wings will now have two full days off as they will not play again until Saturday morning.

Senators and Blackhawks advance to round two

Friday, May 10th, 2013

Two more teams were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Finals on Thursday. Last night the Ottawa Senators sent the Montreal Canadiens home packing and the Chicago Blackhawks did the dame to the Minnesota Wild.

But the bottom line is these two series were not even close. The Senators trounced the Canadiens 6-1 last night to win the Eastern Conference quarterfinal 4-1. How dominant was Ottawa? Well they outscored Montreal 13-0 in the third period throughout the series.

The Blackhawks were equally as dominant against the Wild. Marian Hossa scored twice and registered three points in a 5-1 triumph as Chicago eliminated Minnesota in five games. The Blackhawks beat the Wild despite not getting a goal in the series from Jonathan Toews.

Sharks eliminate Canucks from Stanley Cup playoffs

Wednesday, May 8th, 2013

Patrick Marleau (Ivan Makarov, Wikimedia Commons)

The first team has been knocked out from the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs. On Tuesday evening, the third seeded Vancouver Canucks lost 4-3 to the San Jose Sharks when Patrick Marleau scored at 13:18 on the power play in overtime. San Jose won the Western Conference Quarterfinal 4-0.

The Sharks had the man advantage in the extra period because Daniel Sedin was given a two minute minor for boarding Sharks’ winger Tommy Wingels.

Joe Pavelski also came up big for the Sharks as he scored twice.

This is the very first time that the Sharks have swept an opponent in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Marleau meanwhile scored in every game in the series for the Sharks, who now have time to rest for the Western Conference Semi-Finals.

In other action, the Ottawa Senators got a big overtime goal from Kyle Turris to take a 3-1 series lead on the Montreal Canadiens with a 3-2 victory. The Senators were down 2-0 in the third period, before getting goals from Mike Zibanejad and Cory Conacher. Conacher’s goal came with 23 seconds left in the third period, while it appears that Zibanejad’s goal was kicked in.

Canucks in a hole in the Stanley Cup Playoffs

Monday, May 6th, 2013

Joe Pavelski (Ivan Makarov, Wikimedia Commons)

The Vancouver Canucks are now only one loss away from being eliminated from the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

On Sunday night in the Shark Tank, the Canucks got hammered 5-2 to San Jose, who now have a 3-0 lead on Vancouver in the series.

Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture scored twice for the Sharks against a Canucks team that is completely dysfunctional at the moment. Canucks goaltender Cory Schneider was horrible last night in giving up five goals to the Sharks.

In other action, the Montreal Canadiens/Ottawa Senators series is starting to be extremely physical. Last night there were 236 minutes in penalties, and many of the penalties the Canadiens took should be described as stupid. Ottawa meanwhile won convincingly 6-1 as rookie Jean Gabriel-Pageau recorded a hat trick.

In other games, the Pittsburgh Penguins took a 2-1 series lead over the New York Islanders as Chris Kunitz scored the overtime winner in a 5-4 Pittsburgh win. While in Minnesota, the Wild won their first of the series with a 3-2 win over Chicago on an overtime winner from Jason Zucker. Chicago still leads 2-1.

The 2013 World Men’s Hockey Championships will commence this weekend with Canada playing two games in Stockholm. The first will be against Denmark on Saturday (TSN, 8:00 a.m.) and the second will be against Switzerland on  Sunday (TSN2, 8:00 a.m.).

Other notable players representing Team Canada are Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith, Carolina Hurricanes sniper Eric Staal, Florida Panthers defenceman Brian Campbell (defending Lady Byng winner) and Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos, who was second in the NHL in scoring with 29 goals and 57 points. Blackhawks and Blues win overtime games Tuesday

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013

Danica Patrick (Scott Mecum, Wikimedia Commons)

The opening night of the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs saw two games go into extra time.

In Chicago, Bryan Bickell scored with 3:35 left in the first overtime as the Blackhawks defeated the Minnesota Wild 2-1, while in St. Louis, Kings’ goaltender Jonathan Quick gave the puck away to Alexander Steen, who scored his second of the game as the Blues defeated the Los Angeles Kings 2-1.

In other action, the Anaheim Ducks defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-1.

The biggest story of the night probably came in Chicago, where NASCAR star Danica Patrick scored from center ice during the second intermission. Why was Patrick and her boyfriend Ricky Stenhouse Junior in Chicago, rather than preparing for the weekend’s NASCAR race at the Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama. I’m not a NASCAR expert, but I wouldn’t take Patrick or Stenhouse for the Aaron’s 499. I think Daytona 500 champion Jimmie Johnson is licking his chops by the fact his competitors are taking some leisure time no where near the race track.

NHL Playoff Preview

Tuesday, April 30th, 2013

The 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs start this evening. It should be no secret. The Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks were by far the two best teams in the regular season. But does that mean they will be the two best playoff teams?

The answer this year is yes. The Blackhawks not only had 77 points in 48 games to lead the NHL, they also had a +53 in the for and against ratio. The Penguins meanwhile led the East with 72 points and were a +46. The second seeds of Montreal and Anaheim were well back in their respective conferences and will struggle immensely just to advance to round two.

Weekend Sports Preview–April 20-21–NHL, NBA, ATP & MLB

Saturday, April 20th, 2013

It looks more and more like the Edmonton Oilers will not make the postseason in 2013. However, there is a still a mathematical chance after their impressive 4-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Friday night.

The Oilers played a complete hockey game Friday night at the Pepsi Center in Denver. Jordan Eberle  scored one goal and two assists, while Justin Schultz and Magnus Paajarvi had multi-point games.

The Oilers are now eight points back of the Columbus Blue Jackets with five games to go in the season. The next game on their schedule will be Sunday night against the Anaheim Ducks (Sportsnet, 6:00 p.m.). It is basically simple. Their remaining five games, of which four are at home, are mandatory for the Oilers to win.

Weekend Sports Preview–April 13-14–Masters, NHL & MLB

Saturday, April 13th, 2013

Tiger Woods (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

The biggest story heading into Saturday is Tiger Woods. According to CBS there was a possibility that Woods would be disqualified heading into the third round of the Masters (Saturday, CBS, 1:00 p.m.) for dropping his ball in an illegal area after his approach shot on the 15th hole hit the flag stick and went into the water. Woods apparently dropped his ball two yards back from where he should have dropped it.

However, according to ESPN, Woods was only given a two stroke penalty after officials reviewed the tape. Do you think Woods was given preferential treatment by officials because of his status or is a two-stroke penalty considered harsh enough? Please comment at www.anysportanytime.ca. One thing is for sure, and that is a major golf tournament with Tiger Woods boosts television ratings significantly more than a major golf tournament without him.

Flames trade Bouwmeester to Blues

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

Jay Bouwmeester (Wikimedia Commons)

It is safe to say that the Calgary Flames are officially in a time of transition, and yes Flames fans, you got what you are looking for and that is the start of a massive rebuilding process.

On Monday night prior to the Flames 4-1 loss to Edmonton, Calgary traded their most coveted defenceman in Jay Bouwmeester to the St. Louis  Blues for two prospects and  a conditional draft pick.

The prospects are Swiss goaltender Reto Berra and former Windsor Spitfire defenceman Mark Cundari. The conditional draft choice meanwhile is dependent on whether or not the Blues make the playoffs this season. If the Blues do not go to the playoffs in 2013, the Flames get the Blues’ number four pick in 2013 and then their number one pick in 2014.

In 33 games this season, Bouwmeester has six goals and nine assists for 15 points, but is a -11. However he is extremely valuable for his endurance because he has not missed a game since the 2005 lockout.

Hall sets Oilers record in win over Canucks

Sunday, March 31st, 2013

Taylor Hall (Sarah Connors, Wikimedia Commons)

A week ago when you thought that the Edmonton Oilers might have got themselves out of the Western Conference playoff hunt, they have played outstanding hockey over the last three games.

Saturday night at Rexall Place, it was the Taylor Hall show for the first eight minutes and after that the Oilers did not need to do anything more offensively as Edmonton shut out Vancouver 4-0.

Hall set an Oilers record for the fastest hat trick to start a hockey game. He had a hat trick by the 7:53 mark of the first period. Wayne Gretzky, the greatest athlete of all-time, had the previous Oiler record. Gretzky had a hat trick by the 12:38 mark of the first period against the Quebec Nordiques in a 5-3 Edmonton win in 1986.

Oilers nearly blow huge lead in win over Blackhawks Sunday

Monday, March 11th, 2013

You can call it a huge relief. On Sunday the Edmonton Oilers had a huge 4-0 lead after the first period in Chicago only to see the Blackhawks completely dominate the last 40 minutes.

After three periods, the Oilers hung on for a slim 6-5 victory.

To be positive, the Oilers were not expected to win Sunday at all, after being completely outplayed by the Detroit Red Wings and Nashville Predators, where they were outscored by a combined total of 9-0.

But the Oilers came out great and scored three times before Sportsnet switched to the Oilers game after joining the contest in progress after Canada lost 9-4 to the United States at the World Baseball Classic.
