Marathon games continue in Major League Baseball

Thursday, June 13th, 2013

The Oakland Athletics defeated the New York Yankees this afternoon 3-2 in 18 innings. So, you ask? It was a marathon baseball game and you have those once in a while.

But within the last couple of weeks, it was the fourth game that went 17 innings or more. On May 30, the Toronto Blue Jays lost 4-3 to the San Diego Padres. Then last Saturday, the Blue Jays defeated the Texas Rangers 4-3 in 18 innings and the Miami Marlins defeated the New York Mets 2-1 in 20 innings.

Also last week you saw Kyle Seager of the Seattle Mariners tie the game on a grand slam in the 14th inning only to see Seattle lose 7-5 in 16 innings to the Chicago White Sox.

Weekend Sports Preview–May 25-26–NHL, French Open, PGA, Soccer, MLB, Indianapolis 500 & Memorial Cup

Saturday, May 25th, 2013

Arjen Robben (Wikimedia Commons)

This is the biggest weekend for the year in auto racing, soccer and junor hockey.

In soccer, Borussia Dortmund will play Bayern Munich in the championship of the UEFA Champions League today in London. It marks the first time ever that two teams from Germany will be playing for the championship.

Borussia Dortmund is led by Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, who scored four goals in one game in Borussia Dortmund’s 4-1 win over Real Madrid in the semi-final. Bayern Munich meanwhile is led by midfielders Franck Ribery of France and Arjen Robben of the Netherlands, who have plenty of big game experience. The game can be seen on FOX at 12:45 p.m.

On Sunday, the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500 will take place with American Ed Carpenter on the pole. Carpenter has prior success at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, as he won an Indy Lights race in Indianapolis in 2003. He has also won twice  in IndyCar, 2011 in Kentucky and 2012 in Fontana, California. However his best finish this year has only been 14th.

Marlins fire controversial manager Ozzie Guillen– is Toronto a possibility?

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012

Ozzie Guillen (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

The Miami Marlins have decided to make a managerial change. On Tuesday, the Marlins decided to fire Ozzie Guillen, who spent one year with the Marlins and posted a record of 69-93.

Expectations were high heading into the season for the Marlins with the offseason signings of closer Heath Bell, starting pitcher Mark Buehrle and shortstop Jose Reyes, but the team drastically underperformed, finishing in last place in the National League East, only ahead of the Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros in the senior circuit. The Marlins also entered the season with a new name (Miami Marlins instead of the Florida Marlins) and a new state of the art baseball stadium in south Florida.

Now questions are rising if Guillen could fit in Toronto? I’m not so sure because Guillen still has $7.5 million on his contract that the Marlins will pay him. Will Guillen have the inner desire to manage and if he goes to Toronto, how much of his contract would the Blue Jays be required to pay?

Bailey throws seventh no-hitter of 2012 MLB season

Friday, September 28th, 2012

Homer Bailey (Wikimedia Commons)

For the seventh time this season,  pitcher has thrown a no-hitter in Major League Baseball. On Friday night, Homer Bailey of the Cincinnati Reds struck out ten and walked one in a 1-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Bailey joins Philip Humber of the Chicago White Sox, Jered Weaver of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Johan Santana of the New York Mets, Matt Cain of the San Francisco Giants, Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners and a six pitcher effort by Seattle.

The Reds are one of four teams that have qualified for the postseason. They are joined by the National League East champion Washington Nationals, National League West champion San Francisco Giants and the National League wildcard champion Atlanta Braves.

In other baseball news, the Cleveland Indians have fired manager Manny Acta and named Sandy Alomar Jr. his replacement. The Houston Astros have also named Bo Porter their 2013 manager. Porter is currently the third base coach for the Washington Nationals.

Mariners trade Ichiro to Yankees

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012

Ichiro Suzuki (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

The face of the Seattle Mariners for the last decade is now a New York Yankee. On Monday, the Seattle Mariners traded right fielder Ichiro Suzuki to the New York Yankees with cash for pitchers Danny Farquhar and D.J. Mitchell.

Farquhar spent a brief time with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2011.

In a remarkable move, the New York Yankees and the Mariners made the deal a couple of hours before the teams played against each other at Safeco Field in Seattle last night. The Yankees won 4-1 and Ichiro had a single and a stolen base.

So far this season, Ichiro has only four home runs and 28 runs batted in with a batting average of .261.

I know Ichiro is in the latter stages of his fine Major League career, but I thought Seattle could have got more for him because he is still outstanding defensively and has speed on the base paths. But there was a need for Ichiro in the Big Apple with Brett Gardner out for the year with elbow surgery.

Red Sox & White Sox make deal

Sunday, June 24th, 2012

Kevin Youkilis (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

The Boston Red Sox and the Chicago White Sox have made a baseball trade.

On Sunday, the Boston Red Sox traded third baseman Kevin Youkilis to the Chicago White Sox for outfielder Brent Lilibridge and right handed pitcher Zach Stewart.

Youkilis might be on the downside of his career, but has hit as many as 29 home runs and recorded as many as 115 runs batted in over a season.

This season however, the three-time Gold Glove winner had struggled, as he was only batting .225 with four home runs and 13 runs batted in.

It’s interesting because even though the White Sox are in first place in the American League Central and the Red Sox are in fourth place in the American League East, Chicago and Boston have identical records of 38-34.

Meanwhile, the Blue Jays lost 9-0 Miami on Sunday and fell to 37-35 on the year. Heading into a big three game series this week in Boston at Fenway Park, the Blue Jays are still in playoff contention as they are only 2.5 games back of the Tampa Bay Rays for the wildcard. They will however continue to struggle if their pitching staff has injury woes.

Weekend Sports Preview–May 5 & 6–WHL Playoffs,Stanley Cup Playoffs, NBA Playoffs, MLB, Kentucky Derby, World Hockey Chmpionships

Saturday, May 5th, 2012

Jordan Eberle (Wikimedia Commons)

Team Canada will have a chance to build off of their tight 3-2 victory over Slovakia yesterday when they face their American archrival nemesis this morning at the World Hockey Championships in Helsinki (TSN, 10am).

The Americans are coming off a commanding opening victory over France yesterday where they won 7-2.

Even though, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Devan Dubnyk and Jordan Eberle missed the playoffs for the Edmonton Oilers, this tournament could be valuable experience for them.

An American Oilers fans would be familiar with is defenceman Jeff Petry, who is joined on the American blueline with Jack Johnson, Alex Goligoski and Cam Fowler.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Saturday–NHL Eastern Conference Semi-Final Game 4–New York Rangers @ Washington Capitals–10:30am–NBC–After coming off the longest game of the playoffs Wednesday night (game went into triple overtime), the Capitals will try to tie the series at two games apiece. Brad Richards continues to produce in the playoffs. The former Conn Smythe Trophy winner leads the Rangers in playoff scoring with nine points. For the Rangers to get by Washington however, they will need more from Artem Anisimov and Ruslan Fedotenko. They combined for 25 regular season goals, but only have a combined total of one goal in the playoffs.

Saturday–MLB–Arizona Diamondacks @ New York Mets–1:30pm–FOX–Despite only hitting .254 last season, Mets third baseman David Wright has got off to a great start in 2012, batting  .395 with eight extra base hits. Last night J.J. Putz recorded his sixth save of the season as Arizona defeated the New York Mets 5-4. Arizona is 14-13 while the NY Mets are 13-13.

Weaver no-hits Minnesota

Thursday, May 3rd, 2012

Jered Weaver (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

In the second no-hitter in a week, Jered Weaver delivered magic last night in Anaheim.

Weaver struck out nine and walked one as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim defeated the Minnesota Twins 9-0. Phil Humber of the Chicago White Sox threw a perfect game against the Seattle Mariners on April 21 in a 4-0 win. Minnesota now has not recorded a hit in their last 15 innings.

The win comes at a time when the underachieving Angels are trying to salvage their season. After the Angels swept the Twins and the Toronto Blue Jays won two of three against Texas, the Angels are seven games back of the Rangers in the American League West.

Speaking of the Blue Jays, they were able to do something the Twins couldn’t do yesterday, and that was hit the baseball. Yunel Escobar had three hits, while Edwin Encarnacion and Kelly Johnson each delivered home runs in Toronto’s 11-5 win over Texas.

The Blue Jays are now three games back of the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League West and will start a four game series tonight in Anaheim starting tonight.

Weekend Sports Preview–ATP, Stanley Cup Playoffs, MLB

Friday, April 27th, 2012

David Perron (Matthieu Masquelet, Wikimedia Commons)

Round Two of the Stanley Cup Playoffs gets underway this weekend with the Conference Semi-Finals about to begin.

The series I will be most interested in is the St. Louis Blues and Los Angeles Kings. Can Darryl Sutter incorporate a similar game plan to shock the Blues like he did the Vancouver Canucks? The Blues looked great in beating the San Jose Sharks in five games and look even more dangerous in the playoffs than they did in the regular season because they are very healthy. Andy McDonald, Alexander Steen and David Perron, who all missed considerable time during the regular season, combined for 14 playoff points in five games.

As for the Kings, captain Dustin Brown was their best player against the Canucks. He led the team with five points and was very physical along the way.

Game one is Saturday night at 5:30pm on TSN. My pick is Blues in five.  Here are the other events I’ll be watching:

Saturday–ATP–Barcelona Open Semi-Finals–(3) David Ferrer–ESP vs. (11) Milos Raonic–CAN–5:30am–Sportsnet One–Milos Raonic won the match of his career on Friday, defeating Andy Murray of Great Britain in straight sets in the Barcelona Open quarterfinals. On Saturday, he will try and defeat another elite player in Spain’s David Ferrer. The Spaniard is 3-0 against Raonic including a victory in the fourth round of the Australian Open in 2011. Spaniards Fernando Verdasco is playing Rafael Nadal in the other semi-final.

Humber delivers perfect game

Sunday, April 22nd, 2012

Phil Humber (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

History was made in the baseball world on Saturday afternoon in Seattle, as Phil Humber of the Chicago White Sox became the 21st player in Major League Baseall history to deliver a perfect game.

Humber, who had Tommy John surgery, prior to playing in the Major Leagues, struck out nine as Chicago beat Seattle 4-0. There were no perfect games last year. Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies was the last pitcher to throw a perfect game in 2010.

Humber was a very unsuspecting pitcher to throw a perfect game. Last year he went 9-9 with a 3.75 earned run average. He also had the privilege to throw in front of a national television audience on FOX.

In other baseball news, the Toronto Blue Jays might be slow out of the gate at 8-6 but they were ale to deliver some defensive magic Friday night. For the first time since 1979,  the Blue Jays turned a triple play in a 4-3 win over Kansas City.

The Blue Jays are 8-6 after their 9-5 win over Kansas City Saturday. Even though all-star Jose Bautista is only hitting .200, the team is only half a game back of the New York Yankees in the American League East.

Friday, April 6th, 2012

The Masters will obviously headline my television viewing this  weekend with the very first major of the PGA Season.  Currently Peter Hanson of Sweden (-5) leads U.S. Open Champion Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, former British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa, Ben Crane of the United States and day one leader Lee Westwood of England by a stroke.

Other players in contention are Major winners Zach Johnson, Jim Furyk and Paul Lawrie.

The television coverage for the tournament is Friday at 1pm on TSN, Saturday at 1:30pm on CBS, and Sunday at noon on CBS.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Friday–NLL–Rochester Knighthawks @ Calgary Roughnecks–7pm–I’m heading down to the Scotiabank Saddledome this evening to see the Roughnecks in National Lacrosse League action. At 10-3, the Roughnecks are tied for first place in the West Division with the Colorado Mammoth.  The Roughnecks lead the NLL with 180 goals scored, are led by former Knighthawk Shawn Evans, who leads the team in scoring with 58 points.

Blue Jays win historic marathon–What does it mean?

Friday, April 6th, 2012

The Toronto Blue Jays are in the record books on Thursday after winning the longest opening day game in Major League Baseball history.

Designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion hit a key one out two-run double off the top of the wall in the ninth inning and catcher J.P. Arencibia hit a three run home run in the 16th inning as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Cleveland Indians 7-4.

Larkin inducted into Hall of Fame

Monday, January 9th, 2012

Barry Larkin (Rick Dikeman, Wikimedia Commons)

The Baseball Writers’ Association of America has made their choice on who will be inducted into Cooperstown at the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

A month after the Veterans Committee elected Chicago Cubs third baseman Ron Santo posthumously,  the Committee elected Cincinnati Reds shortstop Barry Larkin today.

Larkin, played from 1986-2004 with the Reds, winning a World Series in 1990 over the Oakland Athletics.

His best year was in 1995, when he was named the National League MVP. He batted .319 that season and helped the Reds get to the National League Championship Series. He was also a 12-time all-star.

Santo played with the Chicago Cubs from 1960-1973 and with the Chicago White Sox in 1974. His finest season came in 1964 when he led the National League with 13 triples and a .398 on base percentage.

Another person that is going to be recognized at Cooperstown this year is the brilliant Toronto Sun sportswriter Bob Elliott, who is a recipient of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award, presented as the highest honour for any member of the Baseball Writers Association of America. No writer has written more interesting stories about Canadian baseball in my lifetime than Elliott, and it is great to see the recognition he deserves.

Padres acquire Quentin

Sunday, January 1st, 2012

Carlos Quentin (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

The San Diego Padres have acquired Carlos Quentin from the Chicago White Sox for two minor league pitchers.

Quentin, who will play left field, will try to improve a  Padres’ offense that scored a National League low 593 runs in 2011. Just don’t expect the Padres to improve that much.

The reason is that Quentin’s offensive numbers have gone south since 2008 when he .288 with 36 home runs and 100 runs batted in. Since then his only best average was last year at .254. His power numbers have remained respectable in the 20-25 home run range, but expect those to drop in the pitching-friendly ball park in San Diego.

In other baseball news, the Toronto Blue Jays have signed pitchers Darren Oliver from the Texas Rangers and Aaron Laffey from the New York Yankees. Even though Oliver had an earned run average of 2.29, he is 41 years old. Laffey, meanwhile was signed to a minor-league contract and may not make the opening day roster unless he has an outstanding spring training.

In other moves the last couple of weeks, the Colorado Rockies have signed outfielder Michael Cuddyer to a three year deal worth $30 million. Cuddyer hit .284 with 20 home runs and 70 runs batted in during 2011 in Minnesota.

Also, the Oakland Athletics traded starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez (16-12, 197 K, 3.12 ERA) to the Washington Nationals and closer Andrew Bailey (24 SV, 3.24 ERA) to the Boston Red Sox.
