Williams very impressive in Wimbledon win

Serena Williams has struggled mightily at times throughout Wimbledon to date, but on Tuesday delivered a convincing straight set win over Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic.

Williams, the thirteen-time major winner, beat the defending Wimbledon champion in straight sets 6-3, 7-6.

She will now go on to face Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka of Belarus while Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland will face Angelique Kerber of Germany in the other semi-final.

The best player on the court today was the American Serena Williams, who is looking to win her first  Grand Slam title since the 2010 Wimbledon when she bet Vera Zvonareva of Russia 6-3, 6-2.

However even though Williams was the better player today,  I feel Azarenka has the game to beat Williams. Chris Evert, the three-time Wimbledon champion gave high praise to Azarenka with her win today over Tamira Paszek of Austria. Evert said the reason why Azarenka is so dangerous is that she doesn’t allow the tennis ball come to her, she goes after the ball. If Azarenka dictates play on Thursday, like she has on hard courts all season long, Williams will be in serious trouble.

Maria Sharapova has won the career grand slam.

On Saturday morning, Sharapova, now the world number one ranked player in the world, defeated Italian Sara Errani 6-3, 6-2 in the women’s final.

Sharapova  joins Americans Maureen Connolly, Doris Hart, Shirley Fry, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Serena Williams, German Steffi Graf, Australian Margaret Court and Czechoslovakia’s Martina Navratilova as the ten players in history to win Grand Slam titles.

Sharapova became number one in the world with her 6-3, 6-3 victory over Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic on Thursday.

She won her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon by defeating Serena Williams 6-1, 6-4 in 2004. Sharapova followed that win with a victory at the 2006 U.S. Open over Belgium’s Justine Henin 6-4, 6-4 and a victory at the 2008 Australian Open with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic.
