Two American goalies record shutouts Thursday

The fact that two American goalies recorded shutouts on Thursday should start raising some eyebrows.

Jimmy Howard was brilliant in the Red Wings’ 2-0 win over Chicago as he made 28 saves last night and Jonathan Quick was equally great for the Kings in making 24 saves in their 3-0 win over the San Jose Sharks. Detroit currently leads Chicago 3-1 and Los Angeles leads San Jose 3-2 in the Western Conference semi-finals.

The fact that American goaltenders are performing well when it matters most is continuing a recent trend. It is a trend that shows American goalies are doing better than Canadian netminders.

Rangers shutout Devils in New Jersey–How impressed are you with the goaltending?

The New York Rangers have taken a 2-1 series lead against the New Jersey Devils in the Eastern Conference Final.

Saturday the Rangers got a shutout from Henrik Lundqvist, who made 36 saves, and got goals from Ryan Callahan, Dan Girardi, and their rookie wiz kid Chris Kreider.

But all hockey fans must be absolutely mesmerized by the recent play of Martin Brodeur, who has made several saves of the spectacular variety in the series. The best one was in the Devils’ game two win, when Brodeur made what fans all calling a scorpion save off of Marian Gaborik. Brodeur swung up his pad while lying on the ground in a last ditch effort to make a save and remarkably made it.

NHL would love Rangers/Kings Stanley Cup

I think it is safe to say that NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman might be sleeping well at night. Why? Well, he is finally about to sell the Phoenix Coyotes and the two teams in the largest American markets are leading their respective conference finals.

The Los Angeles Kings lead the Phoenix Coyotes 1-0 in their best-out-of-seven series after their 4-2 win on Sunday night. The Kings continue to play flawless in these playoffs, especially on the road, where they are a remarkable 6-0. Dwight King scored twice and Dustin Brown scored the game winner. I know Darryl Sutter did a masterful job coaching the Flames in 2004, but he is doing equally a sensational job in southern California. Los Angeles outshot Phoenix 17-4 in the first period, as the Kings took the Coyotes fans out of the game early.

Meanwhile on the American east coast, Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers made 21 saves  for a 3-0 game one win over New Jersey. The Rangers got all three goals in the third period, including a goal by Dan Girardi 53 seconds in which turned out to be the game winner. The Rangers must also be excited about the play of Chris Kreider who scored on the power play.

Kreider worth watching for Rangers

Sunday, April 29th, 2012

A star is being born in front of our eyes as the Stanley Cup Playoffs are proceeding.

On Saturday, American rookie left winger Chris Kreider scored a goal and an assist as the New York Rangers defeated the Washington Capitals 3-1 to take a 1-0 series lead in the Eastern Conference Semi-Final.

Kreider scored the game winner at the seven minute mark of the third period to give the Rangers the victory. Kreider’s fast emergence is interesting because he has not yet played a regular season game. So far in the postseason, he has two goals and one assist, since playing the season with Boston College.

It is interesting that the Rangers have shown more confidence with Kreider than the Senators showed with Mark Stone in the first round of the playoffs.
