According to the Canadian Press, Christine Sinclair of Burnaby, British Columbia has won the 2012 Bobbie Rosenfeld Award as Canada’s top female athlete on Thursday.

Sinclair won the bronze medal for Canada in women’s soccer at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. During the tournament, she set a record for most goals in an Olympic women’s soccer tournament with six.

Sinclair’s value to the Canadian women’s soccer program in 2012 was enormous. In scoring 23 goals, she contributed to 65.9% of Canada’s goals. Three of those goals came in Canada’s controversial 4-3 loss to the United States in the semi-final of the Olympic tournament.

Sinclair was also the flag bearer for Canada during the closing ceremonies of the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

According to the Canadian Press, Christine Sinclair of Burnaby, British Columbia won the 2012 Lou Marsh Award as Canada’s top athlete on Monday.

Sinclair scored six goals for Canada in leading them to a bronze medal in women’s soccer at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The Canadian striker also scored 23 times this season and is the first soccer player ever, male or female, to win the award.

Sinclair defeated speed skater Christine Nesbitt, trampolinist Rosannagh MacLennan, Canada’s only gold medallist from the 2012 Olympic Games in London, cyclist Ryder Hesjedal and Calgary Stampeders’ running back Jon Cornish.

A remarkable statistic published by the Canadian Press this week was that she scored 65.9% of the team’s goals this season.

Ironically though Sinclair is currently serving a four game suspension from FIFA for her actions after Canada’ controversial 4-3 loss to the United States in this past summer’s Olympic semi-final.

Sinclair suspended four games–is it just?

Saturday, October 13th, 2012

Christine Sinclair (John Maxmena, Wikimedia Commons)

FIFA has suspended Canadian women’s soccer star Christine Sinclair four games for displaying unruly behaviour after the semi-finals of the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Sinclair reportedly told the media after Canada’s 4-3 loss to the United States, that her team felt “cheated”. Controversy developed late in the second half of Canada’s loss, when Canadian goaltender Erin McLeod was penalized for holding on to the soccer ball for too long. It is a penalty that is rarely called, if at all, in the sport of soccer. Canada went on to win the bronze medal after a 1-0 win over France.

FIFA made the decision after a disciplinary case in Switzerland.

The Canadian Soccer Association has requested more information about the reasons for FIFA’s decision and will not comment about the controversial suspension at the present time.

Canada loses heartbreaker to USA in Olympic soccer

Monday, August 6th, 2012

Alex Morgan (Wikimedia Commons)

The United States have defeated Canada 4-3 in the greatest women’s soccer game of all time.

The Canadians had many opportunities to win the Olympic women’s semi-final game– three in fact, but at the end of the day couldn’t hold on to their lead.

With Canada leading 3-2 with ten minutes left, Canadian goaltender Erin McLeod of St. Albert, Alberta was called for holding on to the ball for too long. The Americans were granted a free kick and were awarded a penalty kick after a Canadian hand ball. Then Abby Wombach delivered to tie the score before Alex Morgan scored the game winning goal in extra time.

However this was also a vintage game for the greatest soccer player that has ever played. Christine Sinclair of Burnaby, British Columbia recorded a hat trick and will go down in history as one of the best female athletes Canada has ever produced–in any sport.

Canada advances to the semis in Olympic women’s soccer

Friday, August 3rd, 2012

Christine Sinclair (John Maxmena, Wikimedia Commons)

Team Canada is one win away from an Olympic medal in women’s soccer.  Today at Coventry Stadium, the Canadians beat host Great Britain 2-0 in the quarterfinals.

Canada opened the scoring on a goal in the 12th minute by Jonelle Filigno of Mississauga, Ontario. Foligno received the ball from midfielder Sophie Schmidt of Winnipeg and had no problems kicking the ball to the back of the net.

Then 14 minutes later Christine Sinclair of Burnaby, British Columbia scored on a free kick to put the Canadians comfortably out in front.

From there, the Canadians played solid defensively. Great Britain did have a couple of decent scoring opportunities, but couldn’t capitalize.

Team Canada will now play Team United States in the semi-finals at Old Tafford, home of Manchester United of the English Premier League. The game will take place Monday at 12:45 p.m.

The Americans beat New Zealand 2-0 in another quarterfinal in Newcastle. According to CTV, the Canadians are 0-22-4 since their last win against Team USA in 2001.

Japan, who beat Canada 2-1 in the round robin, will play France in the other semi-final.

Canada beats South Africa in women’s soccer

Saturday, July 28th, 2012

Team Canada is back at the .500 mark in women’s soccer at the 2012 Olympic Games.

On Saturday, Christine Sinclair of Burnaby, British Columbia scored twice in a convincing 3-0 win over South Africa. With the victory, Canada improves to 1-1 and are in third place in Pool F behind Japan and Sweden, who each have a win and a tie.

According to the London 2012 website, Melissa Tancredi of Ancaster, Ontario opened the scoring for Canada only seven minutes into the contest. Like Sinclair, Tancredi has two goals in the tournament.

According to Canadian men’s head coach John Herdman:

“We said winning was the only option today. We hopefully got what we needed. We could have had more, but that’s football sometimes.”

Like the game against Japan however, Team Canada did not finish the game without a significant injury concern. Robyn Gayle of Mississauga, Ontario went down which appeared to be a lower body injury and did not return. Defender Candice Chapman was injured against Japan and did not play against South Africa. Meanwhile, Emily Zurrer of Crofton, British Columbia hasn’t played in the tournament to date due to an injury.

When Canadians watch the 2012 Olympic Games in London, they’ll be watching the Canadian women’s soccer team.

On Friday night at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver, Team Canada qualified for their consecutive Olympic Games with a 3-1 win over Mexico.

Christine Sinclair, probably the best  women’s soccer player in the world, scored twice and Melissa Tancredi of Hamilton, Ontario scored the game winning goal.

Team Canada will be joined in the tournament by the United States who earlier on Friday defeated Costa Rica 3-0 in a shutout victory. The Americans despite being outplayed by Costa Rica in the first half.

Team Canada will be looking for redemption at the 2012 Games. Four years ago at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Canada lost 2-1 to the United States in overtime in the quarterfinals. Then at last year’s World Cup, Team Canada played very poor and finished dead last in the tournament.

Other countries that have qualified to date are Great Britain, Japan, North Korea, South Africa, Cameroon, Brazil, Colombia, Sweden and France.  The Olympic tournament starts July 25.

United States win best women’s soccer game ever

Sunday, July 10th, 2011

Hope Solo (John Mena, Wikimedia Commons)

We watch sports to see the unexpected.

On Sunday morning the United States defeated Brazil 3-2 in the best women’s soccer game ever played.

Period.

Leading 1-0 on an own goal scored by Brazil in the opening two minutes, the Americans had the momentum at half time in their quarterfinal matchup in Germany at the Women’s World Cup. Then in the second half, American goaltender Hope Solo made a remarkable save on Cristiane during a penalty kick, but Australian referee Jacqui Melksham ordered that the penalty be retaken because an American had encroached the penalty area before the kick was taken.  Marta made no mistake on her attempt and controversially tied the score 1-1.

Then in overtime, Marta scored her fourth of the tournament to put the Brazilians up 2-1. But the Americans tied it up during the extra time of extra time on a brilliant header by Abby Wambach. But remarkably, Wambach would not have had the opportunity to score if it wasn’t for the ridiculous dramatics by Erika who faked a dive in the extra time. It was Erika’s fake dramatics of an injury that never actually existed that gave the Americans an opportunity to tie the score at two.

Kerrzy’s Notebook: Are You Watching the Women’s World Cup?

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

We’re into the fourth day of action at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany, and if you haven’t been paying attention, you’re missing out!

While there haven’t really been any upsets so far, the first three days of the tournament have provided us with some magical moments on the field and a few controversies off of it. From Christine Sinclair’s wonderful strike for Canada on Sunday, to some strange roster issues in Equatorial Guinea, it’s safe to say that it has been a very interesting few days on the WWC front.

Let’s start with the controversy – “sisters” Salimata and Bilguisa Simpore were dropped from the Guinea roster before the tournament started because they were accused of actually being brothers. ESPN reports the two were “key” players on the team at the 2010 African Women’s Championship in South Africa, but these allegations just wouldn’t go away. One of the two was also rumored to have featured for other national teams in the past, which of course isn’t allowed.

As if that wasn’t enough, Equatorial Guinea lost another player on the eve of their opening game due to eligibility issues. Striker Jade Boho was suspended on Tuesday because she apparently played for Spain within the last five years! Do the national footy associations not check for this sort of stuff? (After the jump: More controversy, plus three SICK goals from the first three days of the tournament!) (more…)
