Joey Votto (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
For the third time in his career, Toronto native Joey Votto, the first baseman slugger for the Cincinnati Reds has been named the National League player of the week.
Votto batted .583, had two home runs, five runs batted in, a .655 on base percentage, and a .917 slugging percentage this past week.
On the season, the Reds slugger is second in batting average at .349, fifteen points back of Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Juan Segura at .364. He is also third in runs scored with 33, behind Carlos Gonzalez of the Colorado Rockies at 36 and Shin-Soo Choo of the Cincinnati Reds at 35.Votto also has six home runs and 20 runs batted in for the year.
Speaking about red hot, so too is Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera. The Tigers slugger and reigning American League MVP is trying to become the first player in Major League Baseball history to win the triple crown in back-to-back years. He currently leads the American League with a .387 batting average and 47 runs batted in, and his 11 home runs are only one back of Edwin Encarnacion of the Toronto Blue Jays, Robinson Cano of the New York Yankees, Mark Reynolds of the Cleveland Indians and Chris Davis of the Baltimore Orioles, who each have 12.

Gerardo Parra (Mark Winograd, Wikimedia Commons)
For the first time in 50 years on Saturday, the only run in a Major League Baseball game came on the first pitch.
In Arizona’s 1-0 win over Miami on Saturday, Gerardo Parra, the Diamondbacks’ right fielder, hit a home run on the first pitch of the game off of Marlins’ starter Tom Koehler.
It would also be the last run scored in the entire game.
The last time that the only run was scored in the entire game from the first pitch was on September 2, 1963. According to Sports Illustrated, Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds hit a home run as the Reds defeated the New York Mets 1-0. This was Rose’s rookie season in Cincinnati. Rose, who went on to be one of the most controversial players of all time because he was banned from baseball for admitting to betting on the sport, is the all-time leader in hits with 4,256.
Arizona meanwhile move into first place in the National League West with the victory.

The loss of Brett Lawrie for Canada at the World Baseball Classic in Arizona is going to be very significant.
Team Canada now will not just lack pitching, but an important bat in their lineup as well. Lawrie injured his rib Wednesday in Canada’s useless exhibition game against the Cincinnati Reds.
The injury raises a question why exhibition games even take place in the first place. I recommend not having them whatsoever at all levels of sport. Injuries like the one Lawrie sustained will have a huge impact in Canada’s efforts in trying to advance to the second round of the World Baseball Classic for the first time.

Russell Martin (Wikimedia Commons)
In only batting .211, it was clearly not the best season for New York Yankees catcher Russell Martin.
But the native of East York, Ontario delivered Sunday night in Baltimore by hitting his second career postseason home run.
The hit was extremely timely as it broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the ninth inning, which helped lead the New York Yankees to a convincing 7-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles in game one of the American League Divisional Series.

Milos Raonic (Chris Johnson, Wikimedia Commons)
This is currently one of the most exciting times in Canadian tennis. Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ontario achieved greatness again Friday night when he defeated U.S. Open and Olympic champion Andy Murray of Great Britain in three sets, 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 at the Japan Open in Tokyo.
Raonic saved off two match points in the third set and was able to break Murray back after being down 4-1 in the final set.
Raonic also performed admirably while not serving in the third set, something he has struggled with in his career. He will now face Japan’s Kei Nishikori in tonight’s final (11pm, Sportsnet One). Raonic is also seeking his third title of the season, having won in Chennai and San Jose earlier in the year.

Homer Bailey (Wikimedia Commons)
For the seventh time this season, pitcher has thrown a no-hitter in Major League Baseball. On Friday night, Homer Bailey of the Cincinnati Reds struck out ten and walked one in a 1-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Bailey joins Philip Humber of the Chicago White Sox, Jered Weaver of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Johan Santana of the New York Mets, Matt Cain of the San Francisco Giants, Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners and a six pitcher effort by Seattle.
The Reds are one of four teams that have qualified for the postseason. They are joined by the National League East champion Washington Nationals, National League West champion San Francisco Giants and the National League wildcard champion Atlanta Braves.
In other baseball news, the Cleveland Indians have fired manager Manny Acta and named Sandy Alomar Jr. his replacement. The Houston Astros have also named Bo Porter their 2013 manager. Porter is currently the third base coach for the Washington Nationals.

A battle of the last two undefeated teams in the Canadian Football League will take to the field today at Mosaic Stadium in Regina.
The 2-0 Saskatchewan Roughriders will host the 2-0 British Columbia Lions (Saturday, 1pm, TSN).
The Roughriders have outscored the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Edmonton Eskimos a combined 60-17, while the Lions have outscored the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Winnipeg Blue Bombers 72-52.
This will be a contest between the Lions offense versus the Roughriders defense. If Geroy Simon and Arland Bruce III are able to expolit Craig Butler and Chris Mackenzie, the Lions should have a good day.

Joey Votto (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
The numbers for Joey Votto’s contract yesterday with the Cincinnati Reds are absolutely staggering:
–12 years, $251 million
–the contract will be over in 2024
–it is the third largest contract in Major League Baseball history
–Votto could be the richest Canadian athlete on the planet
–the deal will end when Votto is 41 years of age
–he will receive $25 million a season for each year from 2018-2023
What do you think? Is Joey Votto worth it? Should the Cincinnati Reds offered Votto a shorter deal so it frees up some space to improve their pitching staff? Are the Reds moving in the same short term direction as the Texas Rangers when they signed all-star shortstop Alex Rodriguez to the richest deal in Major League Baseball history over a decade ago and then realized they needed money to spend on other positions to be a serious contender in the American League?
Votto is the best Canadian baseball player at the moment, but is he worth $251 million. The answer is simply no.

After four days of being down, I am glad to report that AnySportAnyTime is back up and running again. Thank-you to all of our loyal readers for being patient with us.
Here is a recap over what has happened the last four days.
In football, there were two very bizarre Conference Championships that will be remembered more for mistakes made than great plays. In the NFC Championship, Kyle Williams of the San Francisco 49ers dropped a punt in the fourth quarter and again in OT to lead the Giants to a 20-17 overtime win. In the AFC Championship, Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff missed a chip shot field goal late in the fourth quarter to preserve a 23-20 New England win.

Barry Larkin (Rick Dikeman, Wikimedia Commons)
The Baseball Writers’ Association of America has made their choice on who will be inducted into Cooperstown at the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
A month after the Veterans Committee elected Chicago Cubs third baseman Ron Santo posthumously, the Committee elected Cincinnati Reds shortstop Barry Larkin today.
Larkin, played from 1986-2004 with the Reds, winning a World Series in 1990 over the Oakland Athletics.
His best year was in 1995, when he was named the National League MVP. He batted .319 that season and helped the Reds get to the National League Championship Series. He was also a 12-time all-star.
Santo played with the Chicago Cubs from 1960-1973 and with the Chicago White Sox in 1974. His finest season came in 1964 when he led the National League with 13 triples and a .398 on base percentage.
Another person that is going to be recognized at Cooperstown this year is the brilliant Toronto Sun sportswriter Bob Elliott, who is a recipient of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award, presented as the highest honour for any member of the Baseball Writers Association of America. No writer has written more interesting stories about Canadian baseball in my lifetime than Elliott, and it is great to see the recognition he deserves.

World Series Trophy (Matthew Sheppard, Wikimedia Commons)
Tonight is literally one of the greatest nights in sports. It’s Game 7. Winner takes all. For some reason, Game 7 of the World Series and Stanley Cup means more than Game 7 of the NBA Finals. But tonight either the St. Louis Cardinals or Texas Rangers will come away with a Championship.
I thought it would be a good time to take a look back in Major League Baseball online archives and look back at the previous game sevens in World Series history.
1909– Pittsburgh Pirates def. Detroit Tigers– Honus Wagner collected six stolen bases and six runs batted in during the Series. Pirates’ starting pitcher Babe Adams won three of the World Series Games, including game seven, where he threw a six hitter as Pittsburgh won 8-0. The Pirates won the 1909 World Series despite poor defense. They committed 12 errors in seven games.
1924–Washington Senators def. New York Giants–The Giants played in a record fourth consecutive World Series. In game seven, and the score 3-3 in the 12th inning, Giants third baseman Freddie Lidstrom had the ball go over his head and allowed Muddy Ruel to score the winning run. Washington won 4-3.
1925–Pittsburgh Pirates def. Washington Senators–In their first World Series win since 1909, the Pirates outslugged the Senators 9-7 in the deciding game. Played in pouring rain, this Game 7 was considered by many as the worst conditions ever for any World Series game. According to www.baseballlibrary.com, there are rumors that Kiki Cuyler’s game winning two run double in the eighth inning was foul, but the umpires couldn’t see it properly because of the heavy fog. Cuyler would later be inducted into Cooperstown in 1968. The Pirates also were the first team in baseball history to come back from a 3-1 deficit to win the World Series.

Clint Hurdle (Jared Wickerham, Getty Images)
The surprise team in the Major Leagues at the present time are the Pittsburgh Pirates with the Cleveland Indians getting honourable mention.
But literally, who would of thought we would be talking about the Pittsburgh Pirates, at 49-44 and only a half game back of the National League Central Division leading Milwaukee Brewers?
Clint Hurdle accomplished magic with the Colorado Rockies in 2007. The Rockies won 14 of their last 15 games to force a tie-breaker against the San Diego Padres– a game the Rockies won. Colorado then beat the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Divisional Series and the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League Championship Series, before losing to the Boston Red Sox in the World Series.
This year, Hurdle’s performance in managing the Pirates is equally as impressive. Hurdle is managing literally a bunch of no names. Offensively they’re led by outfielder Andrew McCutchen, who is batting .282 with 14 home runs and 56 runs batted in. Second baseman Neil Walker also deserves high praise for his 62 runs batted in.

Asdrubal Cabrera (Wikimedia Commons)
The starters voted by the fans, and rosters named by the managers were announced late Sunday evening for the 2011 Major League Baseball All-Star Game a week from tonight in Arizona.
I always vote online, and select players who statistically should be there, based on their performance in the first half of the regular season.
For the most part, I agreed with the fans’ selections. Thumbs up to Major League Baseball fans worldwide for selecting Detroit Tiger catcher Alex Avila (.297, 10 HR, 46 RBIs), Milwaukee Brewer second baseman Rickie Weeks (.277, 15 HR, 34 RBIs) and Los Angeles Dodger outfielder Matt Kemp (.324, 22 HR, 64 RBIs, 22 SBs) for the first time.
But there was one areas where I found the fans made a mistake. At shortstop, the fans chose the bigger name–Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees (.256, 2 HR, 20 RBIs) over Asdrubal Cabrera of the Cleveland Indians (.293, 14 HR, 49 RBIs). Jeter is only six hits away from the magical 3,000, and the fact that he has a great history playing professional baseball in New York City, helped his stock. But the fans went with the player who has had a great career over the best season, something I felt was wrong. Cabrera will play. He was selected as a reserve by American League Manager Ron Washington of the Texas Rangers.
