Joey Votto (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
For the third time in his career, Toronto native Joey Votto, the first baseman slugger for the Cincinnati Reds has been named the National League player of the week.
Votto batted .583, had two home runs, five runs batted in, a .655 on base percentage, and a .917 slugging percentage this past week.
On the season, the Reds slugger is second in batting average at .349, fifteen points back of Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Juan Segura at .364. He is also third in runs scored with 33, behind Carlos Gonzalez of the Colorado Rockies at 36 and Shin-Soo Choo of the Cincinnati Reds at 35.Votto also has six home runs and 20 runs batted in for the year.
Speaking about red hot, so too is Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera. The Tigers slugger and reigning American League MVP is trying to become the first player in Major League Baseball history to win the triple crown in back-to-back years. He currently leads the American League with a .387 batting average and 47 runs batted in, and his 11 home runs are only one back of Edwin Encarnacion of the Toronto Blue Jays, Robinson Cano of the New York Yankees, Mark Reynolds of the Cleveland Indians and Chris Davis of the Baltimore Orioles, who each have 12.

Michael Bourn (Wikimedia Commons)
The Cleveland Indians made a significant free agent splash on Tuesday signing Michael Bourn from the Atlanta Braves to a four year deal worth $48 million,
Bourn, who is known for his speed over his power, has 276 stolen bases in his career in 871 games with Philadelphia, Houston and Atlanta.
Bourn, a center fielder is just the latest Indians’ free agent that includes first baseman Nick Swisher from the New York Yankees, starting pitcher Brett Myers from the Chicago White Sox and manager Terry Fracona, who was fired by the Boston Red Sox.
The Indians have also signed several big name players to minor league contracts in the offseason. They include starting pitchers Scott Kazmir from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Daisuke Matsuzaka from the Boston Red Sox, closer Matt Capps from the Minnesota Twins and designated hitter Jason Giambi from the Colorado Rockies.
Still, the Indians will have a tough time in the American League Central because the Detroit Tigers remain very strong.

The Miami Marlins have named former Major League catcher Mike Redmond as their new manager.
Redmond played with the Florida Marlins, Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Indians from 1998-2010, where he batted .287 in 764 career games. However, he did not have much power as he only had 13 career home runs.
This is an interesting move by the Marlins because Redmond spent the last two seasons managing in the Toronto Blue Jays A system, last year in Dunedin. Redmond also has never even had a managerial interview at the Major League level before.
Redmond will replace the controversial Ozzie Guillen, who managed the Marlins to a 69-93 record and dead last in the National League East.

Terry Francona (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
The Cleveland Indians have named Terry Francona their manager for the 2013 Major League Baseball season.
The Indians are coming off a 68-94 season, where they finished 20 games back of the division winning Detroit Tigers in the American League central.
Francona has managerial experience with the Philadelphia Phillies, but it was with the Boston Red Sox that he shined the most. He led the Red Sox to two World Series titles in 2004 and 2007. His first World Series win in 2004 was Boston’s first title since 1918.
This past season Francona worked as an analyst for ESPN, doing Sunday Night Baseball with Dan Shulman and Orel Hershiser.

Homer Bailey (Wikimedia Commons)
For the seventh time this season, pitcher has thrown a no-hitter in Major League Baseball. On Friday night, Homer Bailey of the Cincinnati Reds struck out ten and walked one in a 1-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Bailey joins Philip Humber of the Chicago White Sox, Jered Weaver of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Johan Santana of the New York Mets, Matt Cain of the San Francisco Giants, Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners and a six pitcher effort by Seattle.
The Reds are one of four teams that have qualified for the postseason. They are joined by the National League East champion Washington Nationals, National League West champion San Francisco Giants and the National League wildcard champion Atlanta Braves.
In other baseball news, the Cleveland Indians have fired manager Manny Acta and named Sandy Alomar Jr. his replacement. The Houston Astros have also named Bo Porter their 2013 manager. Porter is currently the third base coach for the Washington Nationals.

Mariano Rivera (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
The New York Yankees received a major blow on Friday when they received the news that Mariano Rivera, possibly the greatest closer in the history of the game, will be out for the rest of the season ater tearing his right anterior cruciate ligament last night.
So how did Rivera tear his ACL? Well, in practice. That’s right. Rivera tore his ACL while catching a fly ball in batting practice prior to the New York Yankees 4-3 loss to the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night.
That is why players should possibly listen to NBA great Allen Iverson, and simply not practice.
The good news for Yankees fans however is that Rivera, who has a career record 608 saves, plans to return in 2013 at the age of 43. The bad news is that this doesn’t help me at all in my fantasy baseball pool, where I have had to drop Rivera in favour of Chris Perez of the Cleveland Indians!

The Toronto Blue Jays are in the record books on Thursday after winning the longest opening day game in Major League Baseball history.
Designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion hit a key one out two-run double off the top of the wall in the ninth inning and catcher J.P. Arencibia hit a three run home run in the 16th inning as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Cleveland Indians 7-4.

Derek Lowe (Wikimedia Commons)
The Cleveland Indians tried to improve their starting rotation on Monday with the acquisition of starting pitcher Derek Lowe from the Atlanta Braves for minor league pitcher Chris Jones.
Lowe, 38 years old, only went 9-17 last season with an earned run average of 5.05. The Indians will hope Lowe pitches more like he did in 2010, when he won 16 games, and helped the Braves qualify for the National League playoffs.
This will be Lowe’s fifth team since 1997, as he has also played for the Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers.
While with the Dodgers in 2006, he led the National League in wins with 16.
Starting his career in the bullpen, Lowe led the Boston Red Sox in saves in 2000 with 42. A two-time all-star, Lowe made the switch from the bullpen to the starting rotation in 2002 and had instant success, as he threw a no-hitter that year against the Tampa Bay Rays. In 2004, he won a World Series with the Red Sox.

Jim Thome (Rory Connell, Wikimedia Commons)
A significant milestone in Major League Baseball was achieved on Monday night.
Minnesota Twins’ designated hitter Jim Thome became the eighth player in Major League Baseball history to collect his 600th home run.
Thome actually hit two home runs in a 9-6 Minnesota win in Detroit. He hit his 599th career home run in the sixth inning off of Tigers’ starter Rich Porcello and then his 600th home run in the seventh inning off of reliever Daniel Schlereth. His home run in the sixth inning broke a 3-3 tie and his three run home run in the seventh inning put the Twins up 9-5.
Thome also had five runs batted in during the game and raised his batting average to .254.
It is interesting that Thome’s home run milestone wasn’t given as much hype as Derek Jeter’s 3000th hit earlier in the season, even though Jeter became the 28th player to accomplish his offensive achievement, compared to Thome being the eighth. I have three explanations:
1) The New York Yankees simply get more press and are in a larger baseball market than the Minnesota Twins.
2) It was difficult to promote Thome’s milestone in the making because he wasn’t playing everyday, and at the age of 40, wasn’t getting as many at bats.
3) A significant amount of Jeter’s at bats are meaningful than Thome’s because the Yankees are in a playoff chase, while the Twins are not.

Ubaldo Jimenez (Bing Images)
The Cleveland Indians believe they have an ace to their pitching staff.
Now Indians’ General Manager Chris Antonetti and President Mark Shapiro will hope Ubaldo Jimenez will perform like he did in 2010 rather than 2011 to date.
On Saturday night, the Indians acquired Jimenez for pitching prospects Alex White, Joe Gardner and Drew Pomeranz as well as first baseman Matt McBride.
Jimenez was sensational in 2010, going 19-8 with a 2.88 earned run average with 214 strikeouts. But in 2011, he is only 6-9 with an earned run average of 4.46. I know Coors Field in Denver is a very difficult baseball stadium to hit and benefits batters, but Jimenez has simply not pitched up to his abilities this season.
The trade came as no surprise to baseball analysts when Jimenez was pulled from his poor start for the Colorado Rockies last night. He had given up four runs in the first inning to the San Diego Padres in 10-6 loss.
The Indians are currently 53-51, and a game and a half back of the American League Central Division leading Detroit Tigers.

Hideki Irabu (Bing Images)
Former Montreal Expo pitcher Hideki Irabu is dead at the age of 42.
According to Robert Jablon of the Associated Press, Irabu died of an apparent suicide yesterday in Los Angeles, California.
Irabu starred many years in the Japanese League before joining the New York Yankees in 1997. He played three years with the Yankees, winning two World Series in 1998 and 1999, before being traded to the Expos in another extremely lopsided trade that was not in Montreal’s favour.
On March 22, 2000, Irabu was traded from the New York Yankees to Montreal Expos for pitchers Ted Lilly, Jake Westbrook and pitching prospect Christian Parker.
Parker only went on to play one major league game, but Lilly and Westbrook have had very strong careers. Lilly won 17 games for the Chicago Cubs in 2008 and Westbrook has won 82 games in his career with with the Cleveland Indians and St. Louis Cardinals.

Carlos Beltran (Bing Images)
The San Francisco Giants significantly improved their outfield late last night with the acquisition of outfielder Carlos Beltran from the New York Mets for pitching prospect Zack Wheeler.
After an abundance of injuries, mostly knee issues over the last few years, Beltran has performed admirably in 2011, batting .289 with 15 home runs and 66 runs batted in. He is getting up in age a little at 34, but has shown this year he still has offensive skills.
Beltran should fit in nicely in centerfield where the Giants haven’t received great production this year from Andres Torres (.235, 3 HR, 18 RBIs) and Aaron Rowand (.244, 4 HR, 20 RBIs).
The Giants currently lead the Arizona Diamondbacks by three games in the National League West.
With Wheeler, the Mets are receiving a top prospect that has an effective curveball and a fastball at 95 miles per hour. But my motto is Wheeler is only a prospect. There was a lot of hype about Stephen Strasburg a year ago too.
In another move Thursday, the Cleveland Indians have acquired Japanese outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (.273, 3 HR, 13 RBIs) from the Chicago Cubs for prospects and cash. The Indians have struggled lately, going 3-7 in their last ten games, and were no-hit yesterday by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim starter Johan Santana.

Roberto Alomar (Bing Images)
For the first time in the history of the Toronto Blue Jays’ franchise they are retiring the number of one of their all-time greats.
On July 31 against the Texas Rangers, the Blue Jays will retire the number twelve of future hall of fame second baseman Roberto Alomar.
Alomar, former Blue Jays’ General Manager Pat Gillick, and former Minnesota Twins’ pitcher Bert Blyleven are being inducted into Cooperstown on July 24. Former Montreal Expos’ broadcaster Dave Van Horne will also be awarded with the Ford Frick Award for outstanding lifetime contributions to baseball broadcasting.
Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Alomar played with the San Diego Padres, Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, New York Mets, Chicago White Sox and Arizona Diamondbacks from 1988-2004.

Clint Hurdle (Jared Wickerham, Getty Images)
The surprise team in the Major Leagues at the present time are the Pittsburgh Pirates with the Cleveland Indians getting honourable mention.
But literally, who would of thought we would be talking about the Pittsburgh Pirates, at 49-44 and only a half game back of the National League Central Division leading Milwaukee Brewers?
Clint Hurdle accomplished magic with the Colorado Rockies in 2007. The Rockies won 14 of their last 15 games to force a tie-breaker against the San Diego Padres– a game the Rockies won. Colorado then beat the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Divisional Series and the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League Championship Series, before losing to the Boston Red Sox in the World Series.
This year, Hurdle’s performance in managing the Pirates is equally as impressive. Hurdle is managing literally a bunch of no names. Offensively they’re led by outfielder Andrew McCutchen, who is batting .282 with 14 home runs and 56 runs batted in. Second baseman Neil Walker also deserves high praise for his 62 runs batted in.
