Well you can say the Edmonton Oilers are taking a deep breath today. They finally beat Niklas Backstrom in Minnesota. Backstrom, who was 17-0 against the Oilers in Minnesota prior to Friday, was pulled late in the first period, after Corey Potter put the Oilers up 3-0. Edmonton then went on to win 6-1.
The Oilers won despite being outshot 39-17 by Minnesota. Their play was simply opportunistic. They registered goals on less than one third of their total shots.
Potter and Nail Yakupov scored two goals each for the Oilers, while Jordan Eberle and Taylor Hall had a goal and two assists each.
Jeff Petry meanwhile might have had his best game as an Oiler, as he went a +5.

It looks more and more like the Edmonton Oilers will not make the postseason in 2013. However, there is a still a mathematical chance after their impressive 4-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Friday night.
The Oilers played a complete hockey game Friday night at the Pepsi Center in Denver. Jordan Eberle scored one goal and two assists, while Justin Schultz and Magnus Paajarvi had multi-point games.
The Oilers are now eight points back of the Columbus Blue Jackets with five games to go in the season. The next game on their schedule will be Sunday night against the Anaheim Ducks (Sportsnet, 6:00 p.m.). It is basically simple. Their remaining five games, of which four are at home, are mandatory for the Oilers to win.

The Edmonton Oilers played a complete sixty minutes Tuesday night at the Pepsi Center.
Devan Dubnyk made 36 saves as the Oilers defeated the Colorado Avalanche 4-0 in Denver.
With the win, the Oilers move to within three points of the Minnesota Wild for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Wild lost 2-1 Tuesday to the red hot Anaheim Ducks.
Captain Shawn Horcoff was a key contributor for the Oilers for the second straight night after missing significant time with a broken knuckle. Horcoff scored the game winning goal at 11:20 of the first period.
There are also some rumors that Jordan Eberle is playing with a broken bone in his hand. That would explain his cold production as of late where he only has one assist in his last four games and is a -6 over that stretch.

Friday can be summed up in one word for Canadian baseball. Embarrassing. Team Canada’s pitching deserved a failing grade in a 14-4 loss to Italy. With the loss, Canada’s hopes are all but dashed as it is highly unlikely they will advance to the second round.
How bad was it for Team Canada? Well, the ten run mercy rule came into effect after Canada gave up five runs in the eighth.

The Edmonton Oilers received a complete sixty minute game from their hockey club Thursday night in Dallas. While the Calgary Flames received anything but a complete performance in Denver.
In the Lone Star State, Ales Hemsky led the Oilers offensive attack on the scoresheet with a goal and two assists in a 5-1 win over the Dallas Stars.
Edmonton got off to a great start where they took a 2-0 lead after the first period on two even strength goals, a category the Oilers have struggled in mightily this year. The Oilers then got a lucky bounce in the second period when Jeff Petry shot the puck from a bad angle and went off of Trevor Daley’s stick and past Kari Lehtonen.
The Oilers took a 3-0 lead and ended the Oilers’ six game losing streak in Dallas.

Ryan O’Reilly (Wikimedia Commons)
In a bizarre turn of events on Thursday, the Calgary Flames offered restricted free agent Ryan O’Reilly, the Colorado Avalanche holdout, a two year contract worth $10 million.
The decision came just hours prior to the Flames game against the Avalanche in Denver last night. Then during the first period, just moments after the Flames jumped to a quick 2-0 lead on the Avalanche, it was announced that Colorado was going to match the Flames generous contract offer to O’Reilly.
Is O’Reilly an up and coming centerman? Possibly. But at the end of the day I think Flames General Manager Jay Feaster should be relieved most of his roster is status quo since yesterday. If the Flames did acquire the rights to O’Reilly, they would have had to give the Avalanche their first and third round picks, something that might have been very steep if the Flames don’t make a strong push soon.

The Edmonton Oilers had a record performance Saturday night in a 6-4 win over the Colorado Avalanche.
The Oilers recorded a club record 56 shots on goal against the Avalanche, breaking a record of 55 shots set on March 21, 1986. The Oilers were once down 3-0 and 4-1 in the game, but marched back scoring five unanswered goals.
If memory serves me right there was a remarkable comeback by the Oilers that night in 1986 as well. Minnesota was once up 4-1, I believe, before the Oilers marched back.
Taylor Hall had eight scoring chances, while Jordan Eberle had seven. According to Kevin Weekes of Hockey Night in Canada, the Oilers had 83 shots during the game.

The 2013 Scotties Tournament of Hearts starts today from Kingston, Ontario. For the first time since 1999 Team Canada is from Alberta.
Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin will be wearing the Canadian colours this week and will be participating field. Her first opponent this weekend is New Brunswick’s Andrea Crawford (formerly Kelly), a six-time provincial champion, an impressive statistic when you realize Crawford is only 27. The opening draw is on TSN Saturday at noon mountain time.

Marian Hossa (Dinur Blum, Wikimedia Commons)
The Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers both failed to pick up two points in the standings on Saturday night.
But the 3-2 shootout loss by the Flames to Chicago Saturday are as devastating as they come. Jay Bouwmeester scored with 35 seconds left to give Calgary a 2-1 lead, only to see Marian Hossa tie the game for Chicago at 2 with 2.1 seconds left.
With the loss, Calgary falls to 1-3-2, worst in the Northwest, but psychologically, this is as difficult of a loss as they come in sports.
Now, the Flames have a three game road trip where they will play Detroit, Columbus and Vancouver.

The 47th Super Bowl will take place Sunday in New Orleans (CBS, 4:30 p.m.) with the Baltimore Ravens playing the San Francisco 49ers.
The 49ers have won the Super Bowl five times, while the Ravens won it once in 2001. This will also be a record tenth time the Super Bowl is in New Orleans. The last Super Bowl in Louisiana was in 2002 as the New England Patriots defeated the Saint Louis Rams 20-17.
Super Bowl XLVII will also be historical because brothers will be coaching against each other for the first time. Jim Harbaugh will take the reigns for San Francisco, with his older brother John Harbaugh in charge of Baltimore.
The Ravens (10-6) led the AFC North, while the 49ers (11-4-1) led the NFC West.

Paul Stastny (Wikimedia Commons)
The Calgary Flames and Colorado Avalanche played an even forty minutes Thursday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Then the Avalanche dominated the third period scoring. Centre Paul Stastny, son of Hockey Hall of Famer and Quebec Nordique legend Peter Stastny, scored twice in a span of 1:29 to break a 3-3 deadlock en route to a 6-3 Colorado victory.
Then P.A. Parenteau, who was Colorado’s key offseason free agent from the New York Islanders, scored his second of the game with 1:48 left in the third period to give the Avalanche the three goal victory.
One of the most significant concerns from the Flames’ perspective was Miikka Kiprusoff’s statistical line. The Flames veteran goaltender only made 16 saves on 22 shots.
Meanwhile, Jiri Hudler, who was signed by the Flames in the offseason from Detroit, scored two goals and one assist for Calgary in a losing cause.

The Calgary Flames got their first win of the season Saturday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Defenceman Jay Bouwmeester might have had one of the greatest games as a Calgary Flame in his career as Calgary defeated Edmonton 4-3.
Bouwmeester had a goal, an assist and was a +2 in the contest, as the Flames improve to 1-2-1 on the season.
Lee Stempniak also had a multi-point game for the Flames with a goal and two assists. His goal at 14:57 of the third period came on the power play from Bouwmeester and Jiri Hudler.

Adam Oates, one of the most underrated players in the history of the National Hockey League has been named the head coach of the Washington Capitals and inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame today as well.
Oates, five-time NHL all-star, had 341 goals and 1079 assists and 1420 points with the Detroit Red Wings, Saint Louis Blues, Boston Bruins, Washington Capitals, Philadelphia Flyers, Anaheim Ducks and Edmonton Oilers from 1985-2004. Oates’ lone year playing in Edmonton came in 2003-04, when he finished his NHL career, scoring two goals and 16 assists in 60 games.
Oates joins Joe Sakic of the Colorado Avalanche, Mats Sundin of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Pavel Bure of the Vancouver Canucks.
Since his retirement, Oates was an assistant coach for the Tampa Bay Lightning for one year and the New Jersey Devils for two seasons.
The Capitals had a vacancy at their head coaching position when Dale Hunter decided to return to the London Knights.

Henrik Lundqvist (Robert Kowal, Wikimedia Commons)
The 2012 NHL Award Ceremony takes place tonight in Las Vegas with Nickelback performing.
Let’s see how well I do:
HART–The question here is should the Hart Trophy go to a goalie? The answer this season is yes. Henrik Lundqvist was the primary reason the New York Rangers led the Eastern Conference in points. You can’t give the Hart to a player that missed the playoffs (Steven Stamkos) and in Pittsburgh, when healthy Sidney Crosby is just as valuable to the Penguins as Evgeni Malkin.
VEZINA–If Lundqvist wins the Hart, he’ll win the Vezina too.
NORRIS–Erik Karlsson of the Ottawa Senators had more assists than Zdeno Chara and Shea Weber had points.
