Kane You Dig It?

It’s been quite an exciting few days for Patrick Kane.

Last Friday, he received a compliment from the President of the United States and on Monday he became the third youngest Chicago Blackhawk to score 100 career goals in a rout of the SJ Sharks at the United Center!

Let’s start with that trip to the White House: As the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Hawks were invited to meet the president on Friday in Washington. Barack Obama, a Chicago native, seemed pretty happy to have some Illinois flavor in DC and cracked some jokes about how it usually takes teams from Chicago a while to win a title (think: Chicago Cubs and their 104-year drought). The best part was yet to come though… (more…)

More Chara

It’s Day Three of “CharaGate” in the hockey world as the fallout continues from the hit that left Montreal Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty with a fractured vertebrae and a severe concussion…

Day One featured some “he better be suspended,” a lot of “I can’t believe he wasn’t suspended,” and even some “we’ll pull our sponsorship money!” On Day Two though we saw some even more interesting developments…(After the jump: Kubina suspended, FAIL of the week & more!) (more…)

Kerrzy’s Notebook: Chara – The Aftermath

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

Zdeno Chara will be in the lineup for the Boston Bruins tonight when they host the Buffalo Sabres; Max Pacioretty might get to watch his Montreal Canadiens face the St. Louis Blues, but only on TV if anything.

Like it or not, that’s the reality in the aftermath of a disturbing chain of events on Tuesday that left Pacioretty with a severe concussion and a fractured vertebrae.

The NHL’s decision to not suspend or fine Chara was met with a lot of resistance across the hockey world and opinions were voiced on various mediums throughout the day on Wednesday. From what I read, a lot of people (myself included) were disappointed that Chara escaped punishment and saw this as just another example of the NHL looking the other way when it comes to dangerous hits, which they say they’re against. Kerrzy’s Notebook: Dirty Hit by Big Z?

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

If you thought the season series between the Boston Bruins and the Montreal Canadiens couldn’t get any more dramatic, you were wrong!

On Tuesday night the Habs skated to a 4-1 win at the Bell Centre in Montreal, the first game between the two clubs since a wild 8-6 win for the Bruins that featured a ton of fights and a total of 182 penalty minutes. Much like their last two meetings though, the defining moment of this one wasn’t a big save or a highlight reel goal – this time around it was a young Canadiens forward leaving the ice on a stretcher after a questionable hit.

With about 15 seconds to go in the second period of what was then a 4-0 game, Max Pacioretty chipped the puck down the boards in front of the Boston bench and was rubbed out by defenseman Zdeno Chara. The late hit sent Pacioretty face first into the glass partition between the benches, knocking him out cold…(VID & reaction after the jump!) (more…)

Kerrzy’s Notebook: Head Games

It seems like some guys just don’t learn…

If the National Hockey League is serious about headshots (and they claim to be), NY Islanders enforcer Trevor Gillies won’t be playing much hockey in the coming weeks after what transpired at the Nassau Coliseum in a 4-1 Isles upset of the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday night.

Before we get into it, I’d like to pose a theoretical question to you: If your employer suspended you for two weeks without pay as a result of something you did that went against the company rules, how would you act when you were back on the job?

For most of us, the answer is probably that we would try to avoid the type of conduct that got us in trouble in the first place. For others, this is not the case. Take Trevor Gillies for example… (more…)

Savard Done

Could this be the last we see of Boston Bruins playmaker Marc Savard?

The 33-year-old won’t play again this season and, while he doesn’t want to entertain the thought of never playing again just yet, his career may be over at this point. After taking a heavy (legal) hit from Colorado’s Matt Hunwick in January, Savard suffered his second concussion in 10 months and he says a bunch of the post concussion symptoms came back to him.

Savard told reporters that the Hunwick hit “wasn’t a bad hit at all” and the player had actually reached out to him a couple of times since that game saying he felt terrible. First of all, good on Hunwick. It wasn’t a dirty hit by any means, but I’m sure a lot of people around the hockey world cringed when they head the sound of Savard hitting the boards and saw him drop to the ground. (more…)

Kerrzy’s Notebook: Boston Beatdown/Another Headshot

Friday, February 4th, 2011

If you missed the first 1:20 of Boston’s 6-3 win over the Dallas Stars on Thursday night, you pretty much missed it all!

It almost seemed like the Bruins and Stars had been tipped off that there would be some kind of power outage at the two minute mark, so they should try to get as much game in as possible early on. The first four seconds of the game featured three stoppages and three fights, and it was 2-0 Boston by the 80-second mark. Have you ever seen anything so crazy?

If that wasn’t enough drama for one game, there was another fight at the 3:51 mark and there is likely a suspension on the way for something that happened during the second period…Lets start out with the first 1:20 though…(Video after the jump!) (more…)

Goodbye Brett?

If it feels like we’ve been through this song and dance before, it’s because we have been.

Brett Favre filed his retirement papers with the NFL this week, which appears to close the book on the career of a legendary Super Bowl winning quarterback after a 20th season in the pro ranks. That news comes at the end of a dreadfully disappointing 2010 season that saw his numbers drop off, injuries get the best of him and his prized “consecutive starts” record come to an end.

Is Brett Favre done for good though?

It looks that way – he’s said time and again that “it’s time” and he has come to peace with that idea. Further to that, Vikings coach Leslie Frazier says he isn’t interested in trying to convince the old gunslinger to come back for another season.

So, is Favre done for good? (more…)
