As the 2014 NBA Finals shifts to San Antonio for game three this evening, two Canadian players are playing a role for each of their teams off the bench.

Center Joel Anthony of Montreal, Quebec, who won a NBA Championship with the Heat last year, is seeing some time backing up former Toronto Raptor Chris Bosh. Anthony, who has played in 12 postseason games so far, only has a total of four points, but is making a stronger contribution on defense where he has 18 rebounds, four blocks and two steals in the playoff so far.

His task for the rest of the series will be to defend Spurs star Tim Duncan when Bosh needs some rest.

Historic night in Canadian basketball history

It was a big night in Canadian basketball history.

A message to Steve Nash, Samuel Dalembert, Joel Anthony, Jamaal Magloire and Andy Rautins.

You now have company. Two Canadians were drafted tonight in the first round of the NBA Draft.

Tristan Thompson of Brampton, Ontario was drafted fourth overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers and Cory Joseph of Toronto was drafted twenty-ninth by the San Antonio Spurs. Thompson becomes the highest Canadian player drafted in NBA history.

Both Thompson and Joseph are products of the University of Texas Longhorns. Thompson is a forward, while Joseph is a point guard.

Thompson is known for his excellent shot blocking and offensive rebounding ability. Joseph is considered a solid shooter and can defend well.

The first overall pick went to the Cavaliers as well, who drafted Kyrie Irving from the University of Duke. Irving injured his toe early on in the season against Baylor and missed most of the regular season and the ACC Tournament.

Weekend Sports Recap–March 19-20

Monday, March 21st, 2011

The Sweet Sixteen was settled with March Madness last night, and unfortunately the three teams loaded with Canadian content were eliminated in round three. Texas, Syracuse and Gonzaga are all going home.

My heart goes out to Toronto freshman point guard Cory Joseph of the University of Texas Longhorns. I, like many of you, felt he called time out before the five second clock went off in referee Richard Cartmell’s head.  Joseph was given a five-second violation, and Texas lost their lead and eventually the game, 70-69 to Arizona.

Weekend Sports Preview–March 19-20

Saturday, March 19th, 2011

Jarome Iginla (Nathan Denette, Canadian Press)

Sunday night in Anaheim the Calgary Flames have a monumental match that could ultimately decide their fate in the 2010-11 NHL season. Currently the Flames lead the Ducks by two points in the Western Conference Standings. Calgary sits in eighth place with a record of 37-27-9, while the Ducks are in tenth with a record of 38-27-5. The game takes on added significance because the Ducks have three games in hand on the Flames.

The Ducks have remained in playoff position despite the absence of goaltender Jonas Hiller who is out with a serious case of vertigo. Dan Ellis and Ray Emery have played admirably in Hiller’s place, and have a combined 6-2-1 record. Jarome Iginla is producing at a rapid pace for the Flames. In his last nine games, he has seven goals and five assists.

The game can be seen on Sportsnet, Sunday at 6pm. Here are the other sports events I’ll be watching this weekend:

March Madness has plenty of Canadian flavour

One of the most interesting sporting events on the annual calendar starts today. The NCAA Basketball Tournament, or better known as March Madness.

The top 64 collegiate teams in the United States will vie for national supremacy. But this year, there is an interesting Canadian component. There are four elite Canadians that are on teams in the mix.

Two of them are on Texas. A pair of the Longhorns starting five are freshmen from Ontario. Power forward Tristan Thompson of Brampton and point guard Cory Joseph of Toronto will both have the opportunity to make a name for themselves on the Canadian sports’ landscape over the next three weeks. Thompson is averaging 13.3 points per game, and leads the Longhorns with 7.8 rebounds per game. Joseph is averaging 10.5 points per game, and leads the Longhorns with 3 assists per game. There will also be another Canadian Longhorn next year. Myck Kabongo, cousin of Edmonton Eskimo Patrick Kabongo, has committed to Texas. Seeded fourth in the West Region, the Longhorns have a legitimate chance of seeing Duke in the sweet sixteen a week from today.
