Daniel Nestor (Wikimedia Commons)

One of the most underrated athletes in Canadian sports history will be going for his tenth grand slam title in tennis tomorrow.

Toronto’s Daniel Nestor hasn’t won a singles’ grand slam title, but has won multiple times in men’s doubles and mixed doubles. Let’s not forget as well a Gold medal at the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia with Sebastien Lareau.

Nestor and Max Mirnyi of Belarus, the second seeds in the men’s doubles competition at the French Open, will be taking on the unseeded pair of Juan Sebastian Cabal of Colombia and Eduardo Schwank of Argentina. Cabal and Schwank cannot be taken lightly however as they  recently defeated Mike and Bob Bryan, the number one seeds in the world, in the semi-finals.

The match can be seen on TSN at approximately 9am Mountain time tomorrow morning, following the women’s singles final.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching:

Sedin twins explode in Canucks 7-3 win over Sharks

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

The Vancouver Canucks had an offensive explosion Wednesday evening to take a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference Final.

The Sedin twins, Daniel and Henrik, combined for five points as the Canucks defeated the San Jose Sharks 7-3. Daniel Sedin had two power play goals, while Henrik Sedin had three assists.

A major reason for the Canucks’ success was they were by far the more disciplined team Wednesday. From the latter part of the second period to the late stages of the third, the Sharks took five consecutive penalties. Ben Eager had twenty minutes in penalties while Ryane Clowe and Scott Nichol each had twelve.

Conference Final Predictions

Saturday, May 14th, 2011

Zdeno Chara (Sandra Huffman, Wikimedia Commons)

The NHL Eastern Conference Final goes tonight and the NHL Western Conference Final starts tomorrow evening.

The Tampa Bay Lightning play the Boston Bruins in the East and the Vancouver Canucks play the San Jose Sharks in the West.

In analyzing the two sides, I am predicting the Bruins and the Canucks for the same reason. Team defense.

The Bruins and the Canucks are simply better.

Boston is led by the towering Zdeno Chara, who was terrific against Philadelphia. At 6’9″, 255 pounds, he provides a menacing presence on the Bruins’ blueline. But the Bruin defenceman I have been most impressed with is Dennis Seidenberg, who has a goal, five assists and leads the Bruins with 31 blocked shots. Edmonton native Johnny Boychuk also deserves high praise for his playoff performance. Boychuk, who has two playoff goals, has 26 hits, 13 blocked shots and is an impressive +4.

Vancouver has a very European defense, but loaded with skill. German Christian Ehrhoff had 50 points in the regular season, and was a +19.  Swede Alexander Edler has 43 hits, 27 blocked shots, and has six playoff points. They’re joined on the Canuck blueline by Kevin Bieksa of Grimsby, Ontario, who has 45 hits and Dan Hamhuis, who has put his concussion issues behind him, to provide a steady presence on the Canuck blueline.

My picks– Boston in five, Vancouver in six.

And I’m sticking to it – 15 minutes of fame with Jim and Geoffrey

Monday, February 14th, 2011

It’s Monday and that means another 15 Minutes of Fame video with Jim and Geoffrey.

This week, your humble hosts talk a great deal about suspension in the NHL and the fights that have caused the NHL to hand out those suspensions. Then they talk about some trades speculation across the world, especially in the NBA.

In this week’s GABBYs – on the good side: The National Lacrosse League’s Edmonton Rush get their first win of the season, the NHL’s New Jersey Devils – and their $100 million man Ilya Kovalchuk is turning up the heat and The Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Los Angeles Clippers to end a long run of losses.
On the bad side: Those same Cavaliers set a North American pro sport record with 26 straight losses, Manchester United plays Manchester City in the most expensive match ever to be played and right now the NHL is taking it’s cues from the movie “Slapshot.”

In Quick HIts: Quebec City’s arena prospects and the UFC sets records for ticket sales in Toronto.

Check it out.
