Weekend Sports Preview–January 14 & 15–NFL Playoffs, Australian Open, PGA, NBA & NHL

Tom Brady (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

We are down to eight teams left now in the National Football League.

In the AFC, the New England Patriots (13-3) will host the Denver Broncos (8-8) this evening (CBS, 6pm) in the most anticipated game of the weekend.

Tebownmania is larger now than it ever has, and possibly ever will be. But the bottom line is how many championships in the NFL has Tim Tebow won? The answer is zero and he will be up against a quarterback that has won three Super Bowls, is a two-time MVP and is a seven-time Pro Bowler in Tom Brady. And oh yes, the Patriots hammered the Broncos 41-23 in Denver on December 18, as Brady threw for 320 yards, including 129 yards to underrated tight end Aaron Hernandez. I’m picking New England in a rout.

DeLaet leads Sony Open

Golf Ball (Lotus Head, Wikimedia Commons)

Thursday was a fantastic day in Canadian golf, as Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Saskatchewan recorded a two stroke lead at the Sony Open in Honolulu, Hawaii.

DeLaet leads 2010 Canadian Open champion Carl Pettersson of Sweden, 2011 Players Championship winner K.J. Choi and American Kyle Reifers by two strokes after shooting a sizzling 7-under 63 after the first round.

DeLaet, who was not on the PGA Tour in 2011, missed the majority of last year due to a back injury. The highlight of DeLaet’s round was an eagle on the ninth hole. David Hearn of Brampton, Ontario is also in the hunt at -4.   Calgary’s Stephen Ames is tied for 17th, four strokes off the lead.

This is the second event on the PGA Tour this season. Last week in Kapalua, Maui, Steve Stricker won the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. That event is only for golfers who won on the PGA Tour in the 2011 calendar year. There were no Canadians participating in that particular golf event.

Weekend Sports Preview–July 23-24–Edmonton Indy, RBC Canadian Golf Open, Stamps & Esks, MLB, Senior British Golf Open

Tony Kanaan (Wikimedia Commons)

Over the last two years, some of the most interesting IndyCar races have happened in Edmonton. Two years ago, Brazilian Tony Kanaan suffered first and second degree burns to his body when a splash of fuel got into his cockpit and ignited him and his car.

Then last year, Brazilian Helio Castroneves, who was the leader after 92 laps, was black flagged for blocking on the restart and finished tenth. The eventual winner was New Zealand’s Scott Dixon, the 2008 Indianapolis 500 winner.

Fast forward to 2011, where Dario Franchitti of Scotland has been the driver so far on the IndyCar circuit. He won two weeks ago in Toronto, and has also won in St. Petersburg, Florida and Milwaukee. He leads Australian Will Power by 55 points.

Organizers have changed the layout of the 2011 Edmonton Indy, giving competitors more opportunities to pass.

The race starts Sunday at 12:45pm on TSN.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Saturday & Sunday–10am–Senior British Open–TSN–I wasn’t go to watch this, but now I will. Rod Spittle of St. Catharines, Ontario is the co-leader with Americans Mark Calcavecchia and Lee Rinker. Spittle shot a -5 on Friday to tie for the lead at -7. The emergence of Spittle, 56 years of age, is remarkable because he never played on the PGA Tour. He won the Canadian Amateur in 1977 and 1978, but decided to sell insurance instead of turning professional. Now he is one of the world’s top senior golfers.
