With the CFL season starting less than two weeks away, it’s time to preview the season. In the first of a four part series, it’s time to take a look at the teams in the Eastern Division.

Montreal Alouettes

The Alouettes are going for a three-peat in 2011. After winning the Grey Cup the last two years, head coach Marc Trestman’s name came up several times over the off-season as a possible candidate at the University of Miami and the Oakland Raiders. Well, Al Davis settled on Hue Jackson,  and the Hurricanes on Al Golden.

Trestman has proven a great ability to win with a veteran team, however I feel he did make a couple of key mistakes in terms of strategy on the sidelines last year.

Another key storyline for the Alouettes is regarding the health of  quarterback Anthony Calvillo. The three-time CFL MVP is feeling great after undergoing treatment for thyroid cancer.

The Alouettes’ most significant off-season signing was cornerback Dwight Anderson from the Calgary Stampeders. The native of Spanish Town, Jamaica was third in the CFL last year with five interceptions.

In the kicking game, Sandro DeAngelis replaces Damon Duval who went to Edmonton. DeAngelis was surprisingly released by Hamilton on May 24.

Significant cuts made at CFL Training Camps

Ahman Green (Jeramey Jannene, Wikimedia Commons)

It is that time of year when Canadian Football League franchises are trimming their rosters down for the opening of the season less than a month away.

Rarely due key names catch my eye, but in the last couple of days, three significant players were very notable.

Two of them were Eskimos. Wide receiver Jason Barnes was cut yesterday after failing his physical and non-import defensive back/safety Elliott Richardson was also cut.

Jason Barnes is the older brother of Los Angeles Lakers’ guard Matt Barnes. The major reason Richardson was cut was because Eskimos’ head coach Kavis Reed felt it was important to fill the position with an import.

The third major player that was released today was a football player that never played a game in the CFL.

Surprisingly, the Montreal Alouettes announced the release of running back Ahman Green, who spent 12 seasons in the NFL, including eight with the Green Bay Packers. Green is the all-time rushing leader in Packers’ history with 8,208 yards. He also had 1883 rushing yards in 2003 alone.

Green was expected to be the Alouettes number one running back because they allowed Avon Cobourne to sign with division rival, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Expect De’Andra Cobb, who signed with Montreal from Hamilton in March to be the Alouettes’ premier player in the backfield.
