In what could have been the most complete game the Calgary Flames have had all season long, the Flames defeated the Edmonton Oilers 4-1 on Saturday night at Rexall Place in Edmonton.
According to TSN, rookies Sven Baertschi of Bern, Switzerland and Maxwell Reinhart each scored their first of the season. For Reinhart, it was also the first goal of his National Hockey League career.
Baertschi was one of three Flames to have multi-point games, joining Tim Jackman and T.J. Brodie. Baerschi notched a goal and an assist, while Jackman and Brodie each recorded two assists.
Defenceman Dennis Wideman scored the game winning goal for the Flames at 1:55 on the power play from Jackman and Brodie.

The Calgary Flames recorded their first road win of the 2013 National Hockey League season Tuesday night at Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena, but at the end of the day are holding their breath.
Despite a 4-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings, the Flames lost goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff with a lower body injury.
According to the Associated Press, Flames head coach Bob Hartley will be provided with an update on Kiprusoff’s condition today.
A major reason for the Flames’ victory Tuesday was the offense they received from their defense. Veteran blueliner Dennis Wideman, who was acquired by the Flames in the offseason from the Washington Capitals for Jordan Henry and a fifth round draft pick in 2013, scored a goal and an assist. Defenceman Mark Giordano also scored his first of the season on the powerplay late in the third period.

Dennis Wideman (Wikimedia Commons)
Am I missing something here?
Don’t the Edmonton Oilers need a playmaking defenceman that can play huge quality minutes on the blueline?
Wouldn’t a player that has previously been a +32 in a season and registered 50 points be a perfect fit?
Wouldn’t the Oilers have been better off with Tom Renney and Dennis Wideman than Ralph Krueger and no Dennis Wideman?
Why, only three days before free agent frenzy day, is Tambellini more focused on having a press conference for the announcement of a new head coach than he is of acquiring players that can actually make a difference?
Why did Tambellini take the time out of his schedule to have a photo-op with Krueger when he should have been busy on the phone?
And my last question is why was Tambellini smiling when at the end of the day it was a better day for the Oilers’ rival the Calgary Flames?
The Oilers need a defenceman, not one but two, and it was the Flames got what the Oilers needed on Thursday!

Mike Green (Dan Nicholas, Wikimedia Commons)
Calgary native Mike Green has helped the Washington Capitals even their series against the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference Semi-Final.
Saturday afternoon in the American capital, Green not only scored a goal, but it was the game winner as Washington defeated the NY Rangers 3-2.
Green’s goal came on the powerplay with 5:48 left in the game from defenceman Dennis Wideman.
The series now shifts back to New York City on Monday night with the series tied two games apiece.
Another Capitals defenceman from Calgary that had an outstanding game was Jeff Schultz, who led all players with nine blocked shots. Calgary native Jay Beagle meanwhile continues to play key minutes. Beagle continues to flourish in a defensive role and played 18:13 in all, and was excellent in the final minute to preserve the Washington win.

Throughout the day, stay with www.anysportanytime.ca, for my analysis, and Jim’s analysis, on transactions that have taken place.
Here are the sixteen deals that have been made:
Atlanta trades Niclas Bergfors and Patrick Rissmiller to Florida for Radek Dvorak and a fifth round pick.
Analysis: I’m a little surprised in this one. I think Bergfors is the best player in the deal and better than Dvorak. With Atlanta in more playoff contention than Florida, I thought they wouldn’t get rid of him. In 2010-11, Bergfors has 11 goals and 18 assists, compared to Dvorak’s 7 goals and 14 assists. Dvorak, who was a first line player in Florida, playing with David Booth and former Oiler Marty Reasoner, has not lived up to his potential this season and is on the downside of his career.

Ahhhh, the NHL Trade Deadline.
Once a year you grace us with your presence, teasing us with the prospect of blockbuster deals and momentum shifting swaps all in the name of gearing up for the playoffs/next season (depending on how things have gone up to this point, of course).
It’s been kind of a funny lead up to the “big day” this time around with a number of fairly significant moves since early February, but you just never know what will happen! The aim of this feature will be to try and stay updated on the latest trades up to (and beyond) that 1pm deadline and provide a bit of my own insight into each move!
Let’s get right to it (despite several alarms set, I couldn’t actually get up before 10am this year)! (more…)
