Blackhawks win game seven against the Red Wings

Thursday, May 30th, 2013

The National Hockey League can take a deep sigh of relief. That is because they avoided embarrassment with the Chicago Blackhawks defeating the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 in game seven Wednesday evening in the Western Conference semi-finals.

With less than a minute to go in regulation time, Niklas Hjalmarsson scored on Jimmy Howard to give the Blackhawks the lead. Problem is the goal was waved off by referee Stephen Walkom who had called minor roughing penalties to Kyle Quincey of Detroit and Brandon Saad of Chicago just moments before.

Greg Campbell (Wikimedia Commons)

The Boston Bruins will face the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference Final.

On Saturday night, Gregory Campbell scored twice as the Boston Bruins defeated the New York Rangers 3-1 to win the Eastern Conference semi-final 4-1.

Campbell, and his linemate Shawn Thornton, have  interesting enough been highly praised for their excellent play on the fourth line offensively and defensively in the Stanley Cup Playoffs to date.

The Bruins also got a goal from Torey Krug, who became the first rookie defenceman to score four goals in his first five career playoff games in NHL history.

One area where the Bruins will have the edge against the Penguins is goaltending. Tuukka Rask has really only been bad in one playoff game so far, and that was game four against the Rangers.

Borussia Dortmund is led by Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, who scored four goals in one game in Borussia Dortmund’s 4-1 win over Real Madrid in the semi-final. Bayern Munich meanwhile is led by midfielders Franck Ribery of France and Arjen Robben of the Netherlands, who have plenty of big game experience. The game can be seen on FOX at 12:45 p.m.

Two American goalies record shutouts Thursday

Friday, May 24th, 2013

Jimmy Howard (Anna Enriquez, Wikimedia Commons)

The fact that two American goalies recorded shutouts on Thursday should start raising some eyebrows.

Jimmy Howard was brilliant in the Red Wings’ 2-0 win over Chicago as he made 28 saves last night and Jonathan Quick was equally great for the Kings in making 24 saves in their 3-0 win over the San Jose Sharks. Detroit currently leads Chicago 3-1 and Los Angeles leads San Jose 3-2 in the Western Conference semi-finals.

The fact that American goaltenders are performing well when it matters most is continuing a recent trend. It is a trend that shows American goalies are doing better than Canadian netminders.

Monday evening at Joe Louis Arena, Jimmy Howard made 39 saves as Detroit beat Chicago 3-1 to take a 2-1 series lead in the Western Conference semi-final.

The story of the series right now is the lack of energy and mojo throughout the Blackhawks lineup the last two games. The Red Wings are having a significant amount of more positive energy and flow throughout their entire lineup.

Victoria Day Weekend Sports Preview–May 18-20–NHL, NBA, MLB, Horse Racing & World Hockey Championships

Sidney Crosby (Michael Miller, Wikimedia Commons)

Wayne Gretzky is the greatest hockey player of all-time. Heck, he is also the greatest athlete of all-time. But I think it is safe to say that right now Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins is the best hockey player in the world right now.

On Friday night, Crosby showed just why he is so great. In a dominating performance, Crosby had a hat trick by the early portion of the second period in a 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators in game two of the Eastern Conference semi-final that put the Penguins up 2-0 in the best-out-of-seven series.

Crosby will now have the opportunity to showcase his skills north of the border this weekend as Pittsburgh travels to Ottawa for game three of the Eastern Conference semi-final (Sunday, CBC, 5:30 p.m.). I know the Penguins are loaded with talent that includes Evgeni Malkin and Jarome Iginla, but the bottom line is when healthy Pittsburgh is Crosby’s team.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching:

Saturday–MLB–New York Mets @ Chicago Cubs–WPIX–11:00 a.m.–Two teams in fourth place in their divisions play today at Wrigley Field. The Cubs are 17-24 in the National League Central, while the Mets are 16-23 in the National League East. First baseman Anthony Rizzo, who represented Italy at the World Baseball Classic, with nine home runs, 29 runs batted in and a .522 slugging percentage. While so far this season, the Mets have been led by third baseman David Wright, who leads the team with a .312 batting average, .418 on base percentage and a .536 slugging percentage.

Blackhawks dominate third period in win over Red Wings

Thursday, May 16th, 2013

Patrick Sharp (Wikimedia Commons)

The Chicago Blackhawks have taken a 1-0 lead over the Detroit Red Wings in the Western Conference semi-final.

Wednesday evening at the United Center in Chicago, Patrick Sharp had a goal and two assists as the Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-1.

After a relatively even first forty minutes, the Blackhawks completely dominated the third period, outscoring the Red Wings 3-0 in the final frame. Chicago also outshot Detroit 19-9 over the final twenty minutes.

A big goal for Chicago came with 8:37 left in the game. With the Blackhawks leading 2-1, Chicago got a goal from their fourth line as Marcus Kruger scored from Daniel Carcillo. When you know your fourth line is producing offensively, you know thngs are going very well.

The Blackhawks also got solid goaltending from Corey Crawford, who made 20 saves. The Blackhawks and Red Wings will now have two full days off as they will not play again until Saturday morning.

Red Wings advance after win over Ducks Sunday night

Monday, May 13th, 2013

Henrik Zetterberg (Dan Nicholas, Wikimedia Commons)

The Detroit Red Wings are off to the Western Conference semi-finals, making them the third original six team to win yesterday.

On Sunday night in Anaheim, the Red Wings beat the Ducks 3-2 to win the best out of seven series 4-3. This was the only series in the four Western Conference quarterfinals in the 2013 NHL playoffs that went to a game seven.

Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg and Valtteri Filppula led Detroit in scoring with a goal and an assist each, while Justin Abdelkader scored a huge shorthanded goal on the breakaway in the first period.

Abdelkader’s goal was sweet for him as he was suspended two games earlier in the series for his hit on Ducks’ defenceman Toni Lydman.

The Red Wings will now play the Chicago Blackhawks and the San Jose Sharks will play the Los Angeles Kings in the Western Conference semi-finals.

Weekend Sports Preview–May 11-12–NHL, WHL, World Hockey Championship & PGA

Saturday, May 11th, 2013

Henrik Zetterberg (Dan Nicholas, Wikimedia Commons)

One of the most exciting times in the world of sports is simply game seven. That’s what we’ll have Sunday night in southern California as the Anaheim Ducks host the Detroit Red Wings.

Last night, Red Wings’ captain Henrik Zetterberg scored at 1:04 of overtime to give the Red Wings a 4-3 win over the Ducks to tie their Western Conference quarterfinal series at three games apiece.

The Red Wings might have a strong core of veterans, but after all these years are still getting it done. Goaltender Jimmy Howard is playing at an elite level as Detroit will look to move on during their last year in the Western Conference. How dangerous will Detrot be next year in the East? The answer is very. The game will be seen Sunday night on TSN at 8:00 p.m.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Saturday & Sunday– PGA–Players Championship–NBC–12 p.m.– Spain’s Sergio Garcia, probably one of the best golfers in the world to have never won a major, currently leads Tiger Woods by a stroke after shooting a -11 at Sawgrass over the first two days of competition. Garcia and Woods have won the Players Championship once before– Woods in 2001 and Garcia in 2008. As for the first round leader, American Roberto Castro, he went from -9 to -3 and 1st to 30th after shooting a 78 on Friday.
