Votto red hot for the Reds

Monday, May 20th, 2013

Joey Votto (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

For the third time in his career, Toronto native Joey Votto, the first baseman slugger for the Cincinnati Reds has been named the National League player of the week.

Votto batted .583, had two home runs, five runs batted in, a .655 on base percentage, and a .917 slugging percentage this past week.

On the season, the Reds slugger is second in batting average at .349, fifteen points back of Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Juan Segura at .364. He is also third in runs scored with 33, behind Carlos Gonzalez of the Colorado Rockies at 36 and Shin-Soo Choo of the Cincinnati Reds at 35.Votto also has six home runs and 20 runs batted in for the year.

Speaking about red hot, so too is Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera. The Tigers slugger and reigning American League MVP is trying to become the first player in Major League Baseball history to win the triple crown in back-to-back years. He currently leads the American League with a .387 batting average and 47 runs batted in, and his 11 home runs are only one back of Edwin Encarnacion of the Toronto Blue Jays, Robinson Cano of the New York Yankees, Mark Reynolds of the Cleveland Indians and Chris Davis of the Baltimore Orioles, who each have 12.

Blue Jays have huge character win in Detroit Wednesday

Thursday, April 11th, 2013

J.P. Arencibia (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

I admit. I am very skeptical of the Toronto Blue Jays this season. I am not completely convinced the core group of talent that Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos has brought in is the right mix.

In many ways, the Blue Jays are trying to do the same thing that the Miami Marlins did last season and that is to bring in several missing pieces and contend for the playoffs. It was a disaster for the Marlins last year, and the Blue Jays not only made several offseason acquisitions, but they acquired four Marlins in the process.

The slow start at 2-5 for the Blue Jays was no surprise to me. However, the win on Tuesday in Detroit was as much of a character win you can get at this stage of the season. The Blue Jays were losing 6-1 on the road against the defending American League champions, when the offensive flood gates opened.

The Blue Jays scored three times in the sixth inning, highlighted by a Mark DeRosa two-run RBI double, and a three-run RBI double by J.P. Arencibia in the seventh inning en route to a 8-6 victory.

The Blue Jays may only be 3-5, but the impressive comeback win could bring definitive confidence in their locker room going forward.

Raiders decide on a different quarterback in 2013

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013

Matt Flynn (Gabriel Cervantes, Wikimedia Commons)

The Oakland Raiders have decided to go with a different quarterback in 2013. In will come Matt Flynn, who backed up Russell Wilson last year in Seattle, and out is Carson Palmer, who was acquired by the Arizona Cardinals in a deal involving draft picks.

Meanwhile, Kevin Kolb who quarterbacked the Cardinals a year ago, is off to Buffalo. The Bills were in need of a quarterback after releasing Ryan Fitzpatrick.

I think it is fair to say that Kolb, Flynn, and Palmer all have something in common. They are all average quarterbacks who at times have shown flashes of brilliance, but are simply not consistent enough at this stage of their careers.

Meanwhile, one could argue that the Dallas Cowboys rewarded a quarterback for being average when they signed Tony Romo to an amazing six year deal worth $108 million on Friday. Romo was one of three professional athletes who signed massive contracts last week, joining Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander (seven years, $180 million) and San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey (nine years, $167 million). The biggest differences between Romo’s contract versus Verlander and Posey’s contract is that Romo’s contract is not guaranteed.

Are the Blue Jays the class of the American League?

Thursday, December 20th, 2012

Josh Hamilton (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

There is no doubt that the Toronto Blue Jays have opened their wallets big time this past offseason and are willing to make a big time move to contend in the American League.

But you have to put everything into perspective. This was still a horrible baseball team last season at 73-89, and will have to win a minimum of 20 extra games to put them in a position to be in a playoff spot.

I know they acquired a whole bunch of talent, but with every single player they acquired, comes a question mark.

The Angels seem to be in a stronger position with the acquisition of star outfielder Josh Hamilton from Texas. The Hamilton-Albert Pujols combination gives the Angels some serious fire power.

The Blue Jays will also have to contend with the New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays who will all expect to be in contention as well come year’s end.

Blue Jays sign Melky Cabrera

Friday, November 16th, 2012

Melky Cabrera (Wikimedia Commons)

The Toronto Blue Jays have opened up their wallets again. On Friday they signed outfielder Melky Cabrera from the San Francisco Giants to a two year deal worth $16 million.

Cabrera was the Most Valuable Player of the All-Star Game last season. He led the senior circuit with a .346 batting average before he was suspended 50 games for steroid use.

With the signing it appears Cabrera will go to designated hitter. The signing is just the latest example that the Blue Jays mean business this season.

In other Blue Jays news, they are still waiting to hear from the MLB front office for approval of their blockbuster deal with the Miami Marlins. If the deal is disapproved for any reason, don’t be surprised if television ratings plummet next season and attendance drops dramatically at the Rogers Centre.

The Detroit Tigers have also signed Torii Hunter away from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Hunter is a nine time gold glove award winner who set a career high in batting average last year at .313.

Cabrera & Posey win baseball’s MVP awards

Friday, November 16th, 2012

Miguel Cabrera (Wikimedia Commons)

Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers and Buster Posey of the San Francisco Giants have won baseball’s Most Valuable Player Awards for 2012.

Cabrera’s AL MVP win should come as no surprise. That is what happen when you become the first player in over forty years to win the triple crown. Posey meanwhile hit .336 and became the first catcher in the National League to win the batting title since Ernie Lombardi of the Boston Braves led the National League in 1942.

Outfielder Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim won the AL rookie of the year in a landslide. Trout led the AL in runs and stolen bases. Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals won the NL rookie of the year. He was fifth in the senior circuit in runs.

Another National to win an award was Davey Johnson who won the NL manager of the year. He was the AL manager of the year with Baltimore in 1997. Also for the second time in his career, Bob Melvin has won the manager of the year award. Nobody expected him to lead Oakland to the AL West title, but Oakland did just that getting by the sexier teams such as Texas and the Angels.

The San Francisco Giants are the 2012 World Series Champions.

Sunday night at Comerica Park in Detroit, Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro recorded a two-out RBI single in the tenth inning that scored Ryan Theriot to give San Francisco a 4-3 win over the Detroit Tigers.

Giants one win away from World Series

Sunday, October 28th, 2012

Ryan Vogelsong (Wikimedia Commons)

The San Francisco Giants are winning baseball games with great pitching. On Saturday night in Detroit, it was Ryan Vogelsong’s turn.

The Charlotte native threw five shutout innings as the Giants blanked the Detroit Tigers 2-0 to take a 3-0 lead in the series. With the win, they are only one win away from winning their second World Series in three years.

Left fielder Gregor Blanco meanwhile is making manager Bruce Bochy look like a genius. Bochy decided to put Blanco on his playoff roster over Melky Cabrera, who could have come back to play for the Giants in the World Series after serving his suspension for steroid use. But Bochy did not want to interrupt team chemistry and Blanco delivered with a key second inning triple that scored Hunter Pence. It also turned out to be the game winning run batted in.

Tonight Matt Cain gets the start for San Francisco and Max Scherzer counters for Detroit.

Weekend Sports Preview–October 27 & 28–NFL, CFL, MLB & Short Track Speed Skating

Saturday, October 27th, 2012

The Edmonton Eskimos have a chance of clinching a playoff spot on Sunday when they play the Montreal Alouettes. At 7-9 they sit in last place in the Western Division, but will qualify  for the postseason in the crossover into the East because they will have a better record than the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The Eskimos will not have running back Hugh Charles in their lineup. Charles suffered a knee injury in the Eskimos’ 39-19 loss to the B.C. Lions last Friday. The Eskimos then brought back Cory Boyd this past week to backup Jerome Messam.

Giants take commanding lead in World Series

Friday, October 26th, 2012

Madison Bumgarner (Wikimedia Commons)

The San Francisco Giants are up 2-0 in the World Series.

On Saturday, starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner pitched seven shutout innings as the Giants defeated the Detroit Tigers 2-0.

The Giants however received a bizarre hit that led to the game winning run. With the Giants having  runners on first and second with nobody out in the seventh inning, Gregor Blanco delivered a bunt down the third base line that was barely fair. Then with the bases loaded, Brandon Crawford hit into a double play, but scored the run.

One of the strangest rules in baseball is this. Had Crawford been safe at first and hit into a fielder’s choice, he gets a run batted in, but because he hit into a double play, he does not.

Sandoval hits three home runs in game one of World Series

Thursday, October 25th, 2012

Pablo Sandoval (S.D. Dirk, Wikimedia Commons)

The San Francisco Giants have a 1-0 lead in the World Series over the Detroit Tigers thanks to the bat of third baseman Pablo Sandoval.

Sandoval became the fourth player in Major League Baseball history to hit three home runs in a World Series game as the Giants defeated the Tigers 8-3.

Sandoval joins a list that includes Reggie Jackson, Babe Ruth and Albert Pujols. Sandoval actually had four hits, as he added a single and had a slugging percentage of 3.250.

Game one was historic on two other fronts. Starting pitcher Barry Zito set a record for the longest gap (ten years) between winning the Cy Young Award and starting in a World Series game.

Giants force game 7 in NLCS tonight

Monday, October 22nd, 2012

There will be a seventh and deciding game in the National League Championship Series at San Francisco’s AT&T Park Monday night.

On Sunday, Giants ace Ryan Vogelsong was brilliant, as he pitched seven masterful innings, striking out nine and only giving up one run as San Francisco defeated St. Louis 6-1 in the sixth game of the series.

Leading 1-0, the Giants had a big second inning as they scored four times. The inning was highlighted by a Pete Kozma error that scored Brandon Belt, who led off the inning with a triple, and a two run RBI double by Marco Scutaro.

Tigers advance to the World Series

Friday, October 19th, 2012

The Detroit Tigers have advanced to the 2012 World Series.

On Thursday afternoon at Comerica Park, Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta homered twice as Detroit pounded New York 8-1.

The Tigers swept the American League Championship Series 4-0.

Other Tigers to hit home runs were Miguel Cabrera and Austin Jackson. Max Scherzer also pitched brilliantly for the Tigers, as he struck out ten Yankees in only five and two thirds innings pitched.

The Tigers pounded out 16 hits on Yankees pitching. They surprisingly got eleven hits in only the first three and two thirds innings on Yankees ace C.C. Sabathia, who was excellent in the American League Divisional Series.
