Kings eliminate Blues in six

Saturday, May 11th, 2013

The Los Angeles Kings are starting to play with the same sort of confidence that won them the Stanley Cup last season.

On Friay night in southern California, the Kings defeated the St. Louis Blues 2-1 to win he series 4-2. Former Edmonton Oiler Dustin Penner scored the game winning goal with two tenths of a second left in the second period to break a 1-1 deadlock.

The Kings will now face either the San Jose Sharks or the Anaheim Ducks in the second round. If Detroit eliminates Anaheim in game seven, the Kings will play the Sharks. However if Anaheim wins, the Kings will play the Ducks.

One of the funnies quotes in the Stanley Cup Playoffs came before the game from Kings head coach Darryl Sutter. When asked about Kings’ defenceman Robyn Regehr’s broken nose, Sutter said the following:

“Yeah, he got hit in the nose again. It was broke, so he can’t re-broke it.”

Kings win Stanley Cup–Which King are you the most happy for?

Monday, June 11th, 2012

The Los Angeles Kings have won their first Stanley Cup in franchise history.

Dustin Brown scored a goal and two assists as the Kings defeated the New Jersey Devils 6-1 to win the Stanley Cup Finals 4-2.

Now it is your turn. Please comment below what Los Angeles you are most happy for by winning the Stanley Cup.

Is it Darryl Sutter, who controversially was fired by the Calgary Flames after a solid run as Head Coach and General Manager?

Was it Dustin Penner, who signed a contract that many questioned in Edmonton, and flourished on the Kings second line with Mike Richards and Jeff Carter?

Was it Mike Richards, Simon Gagne  and Drew Doughty who have now won an Olympic Gold medal and Stanley Cup?

Kings advance to Stanley Cup Final

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012

The Los Angeles Kings are headed to the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals after their 4-3  overtime win over the Phoenix Coyotes in game five of the Western Conference Final.

Former Edmonton Oiler Dustin Penner scored the overtime winner with 2:18 left in the first overtime from Jeff Carter and Slava Voynov. Penner and Carter really played well with Mike Richards and give the Kings solid second line scoring.

Kings defenceman Drew Doughty was named the first star despite getting a two minute minor for interference in overtime. Doughty, who played with an incredible amount of emotion, led the Kings offensively with a goal and an assist and made a brilliant play defensively to break up an odd man rush for Phoenix.

The game did not occur without controversy however. On the shift before Penner’s game winner Kings’ captain Dustin Brown kneed Michal Rozsival of the Coyotes, but no penalty was given.

Kreider worth watching for Rangers

Sunday, April 29th, 2012

A star is being born in front of our eyes as the Stanley Cup Playoffs are proceeding.

On Saturday, American rookie left winger Chris Kreider scored a goal and an assist as the New York Rangers defeated the Washington Capitals 3-1 to take a 1-0 series lead in the Eastern Conference Semi-Final.

Kreider scored the game winner at the seven minute mark of the third period to give the Rangers the victory. Kreider’s fast emergence is interesting because he has not yet played a regular season game. So far in the postseason, he has two goals and one assist, since playing the season with Boston College.

It is interesting that the Rangers have shown more confidence with Kreider than the Senators showed with Mark Stone in the first round of the playoffs.

Penguins blow huge lead & Penner shows up in L.A. win

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

Dustin Penner (Wikimedia Commons)

It was a very intriguing opening night of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

First off, you have the Pittsburgh Penguins blowing a huge 3-0 lead only to see the Philadelphia Flyers storm back to win the game 4-3 in overtime on a game winning goal by Jakub Voracek. Other key performers for the Flyers Wednesday night were Daniel Briere who notched two goals and Brayden Schenn with a goal and two assists. It will be interesting to see how the Penguins rebound from a devastating loss.

In Vancouver, the Canucks had penalty issues all night long, accumulating 27 minutes in penalties, highlighted by a five minute major for boarding by Byron Bitz in the second period. The Kings kept the game close, and with the score 2-2, former Oiler Dustin Penner scored the game winner with 3:14 left. How many times Penner will come to play during the playoffs is anyone’s guess, but he was a factor Wednesday night as he was a recipient of an outstanding Jeff Carter pass with his skate in a 4-2 Kings win.

In Nashville, the Preds were lucky to beat the Red Wings 3-2. The team got two garage goals early–a Paul Gaustad shot from a bad angle that went off of Brad Stuart’s skate and a Matt Halischuk shot near the blueline that was tipped by Gabriel Bourque that handcuffed Jimmy Howard.

Kings beat Flames 4-1

Sunday, January 15th, 2012

The Los Angeles Kings defeated the Calgary Flames 4-1 Saturday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome in a game loaded with unique storylines.

In this particular game you had Brent Sutter coach for the Flames against his brother Darryl, who coaches the Kings. When the two worked in Calgary, with Brent as the head coach and Darryl as the general manager, they had somewhat of a rocky relationship.

You also had the return of forward Michael Cammalleri, who was traded to Calgary from Montreal for Rene Bourque this week. Cammalleri scored the only Flames goal, his tenth of the season.

After a scoreless first period, the Kings jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals by Anze Kopitar, Mike Richards and Matt Greene.

Kings forward Dustin Penner was back in the lineup after suffering back spasms from eating his wife’s pancakes.

In other Flames news, General Manager Jay Feaster cleared up why Cammalleri wasn’t told immediately where he had been traded on Thursday night. According to CBC, the reason is Feaster didn’t want to make the trade official until the Flames’ game against Anaheim started so Bourque could serve one extra game of his five game suspension. This was a very classy move by Feaster that should strengthen his relationship with other General Managers in the National Hockey League.

Oilers call up Teubert

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

Colten Teubert (Wikimedia Commons)

The Edmonton Oilers feel their time is now to call up defenceman Colten Teubert.

Teubert, 21, was traded from Los Angeles to Edmonton with a first round pick in 2011 and a second round pick in 2012 for Dustin Penner on February 28.

A primary reason fort the call-up of Teubert was due to the suspension of Andy Sutton (five games for a hit on Avalanche rookie Gabriel Landeskog), the knee injury to Ryan Whitney, that will keep him out of the lineup for two more weeks and the recent shoulder issue for Cam Barker.

Teubert’s call-up came as minimal surprise after the team sent down Alex Plante back to Oklahoma City yesterday.

Teubert will be joining an Oilers’ defense that is playing exceptionally well. Corey Potter currently has seven points in nine games. Tom Gilbert and Ladislav Smid are providing veteran leadership. Jeff Petry is showing great skill with nine blocked shots in four games, and Theo Peckham is making his physical presence felt night in and night out.

With the call up of Teubert, the Oilers sent Linus Omark back down to the American Hockey League.

One thing Teubert brings with him to Edmonton is an understanding of what it takes to win. He was part of the Canadian National Junior Team blueline that won the Gold medal at the 2009 World Junior Hockey Championships in Ottawa.

Oilers trade Cogliano to Ducks

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

Andrew Cogliano (Dan Nicholas, Wikimedia Commons)

The Edmonton Oilers have traded forward Andrew Cogliano to the Anaheim Ducks for a second round pick in the 2013 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

Cogliano scored 11 goals and 24 assists for an Oiler team that struggled mightily in the Western Conference standings.

Known for his speed and endurance, Cogliano did not miss one game in his first four years as an Edmonton Oiler. It is just too bad he seemed to take many nights off while playing in Edmonton, even though statistically he was registered as having played a game.

Cogliano was the Oilers’ first round pick, 25th overall in the 2005 National Hockey League Entry Draft, but seemed to be passed on the depth chart in recent years by Sam Gagner, Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle and Magnus Paajarvi.

This is also not the first time that Cogliano was involved in trade rumors. He, and Dustin Penner were heavily rumored to be traded for Dany Heatley two years ago.

Oilers draft Nugent-Hopkins number one

Friday, June 24th, 2011

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (Wikimedia Commons)

The Edmonton Oilers went with speed and finesse over defense in the 2010-11 NHL Entry Draft.

In Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, the Oilers are getting a playmaking prospect from the Red Deer Rebels.

Nugent-Hopkins, a native of Burnaby, British Columbia, scored 31 goals and 75 assists in 67 games in the Western Hockey League.

There is a very strong chance however that the Oilers will not have Nugent-Hopkins on their team this upcoming season. It is expected he will play another year of junior hockey before making the jump to the NHL.

The Oilers also had the 19th overall pick from the Los Angeles Kings, in their trade for Dustin Penner. Edmonton selected defenceman Oscar Klefbom from Farjestad of the Swedish elite league.

The Flames meanwhile selected Sven Batschi, a left winger from the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League. Bartschi was on a very talented Winterhawks’ squad that included fellow Swiss star Nino Niederreiter (the 5th overall pick by the New York Islanders last season) and Ryan Johansen (the fourth overall pick by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2010).

NHL Draft lottery – Oilers get first overall pick

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

And the first overall pick in the 2011 National Hockey League draft goes to – The Edmonton Oilers.

Now that we’re done with that, the questions begin. Do you remember the Taylor vs Tyler debate of the 2010 NHL draft?  I remember a feverish, life-or-death set of debates on the Internet, near the water cooler at work, on my Facebook wall and in the newspaper.

Will we see the same type of debate in the next few months between the two top-touted players Adam Larsson and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins? Likely so, but the biggest difference between this year and last year is that Taylor and Tyler both play forward. Either of those players could have made an impact in the same type of way on the Oilers lineup.

Going into the 2011 draft, the Oilers will have to choose based on position. Do they need a big, powerful defender who can run a power play and has been compared to Kerrzy-favourite Nicklas Lidstrom? Or do they need a potential first-line centreman who might not be ready for the NHL right now but has a huge upside.

Kerrzy’s Notebook: NHL Playoff Preview – Western Conference

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

Well folks, the NHL postseason is finally here: sixteen teams looking for sixteen wins and an opportunity to sip out of Lord Stanley’s famed mug.

The first round of the playoffs begins on Wednesday night and features some burning rivalries, new and old, and some others that are slowing inching toward “rivalry” status. Whatever the case, it won’t be long now until we see the captain of one of the sixteen remaining teams lifting the Stanley Cup proudly over his head…but who will it be?

Here’s a look, through my eyes, at the Western Conference pairings! (more…)

Penner and Arnott fitting in with new teams

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

Jason Arnott (Rob Carr, Getty Images)

The overall prognosis on February 28th, was that the majority of teams in the National Hockey League didn’t improve themselves all that significantly by moves they made on the final day of the trade deadline.

However two former Oilers have stepped up since being traded.

I know Jason Arnott has not been an Oiler since 1998, but the former Oilers’ first rounder has been a definite spark plug for a Washington Capitals team that is red hot. Since Arnott was traded from the Devils for Dave Steckel, the Capitals are 7-0, and Arnott has two goals, three assists, is a +5, and 16 shots on goal over that time.  He has also played extremely well alongside Alexander Semin and Alexander Ovechkin on the powerplay. Over that time Ovechkin has four goals and seven assists and Semin has three goals and three assists.
