Dylan Armstrong (Wilson Wong, Wikimedia Commons)
According to the Canadian Press, Athletics Canada has decided to fire head coach Alex Gardiner and chief high performance officer Martin Goulet.
The reason for the decision was because Canadian track and field athletes failed to win the projected goal of three medals at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Their lone medal came from Derek Drouin of Sarnia, Ontario in the men’s high jump.
However, the three projected medals at the 2012 Olympic Games in London seemed to be high from the very start. Team Canada only won one medal at the 2011 International Association of Athletics Federations World Championship in Athletics in Daegu, South Korea.
Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops, British Columbia, who won silver in Daegu, was in a very deep men’s shot put field, finished fifth at the Olympic Games. Drouin’s medal was completely unexpected.
Meanwhile, the Canadian men’s 4x100m relay team nearly won the Olympic bronze medal last summer in London, but were disqualified after a video review.

For the first time ever, I attended a track and field event on the weekend– the Canadian Olympic Track and Field Trials at Calgary’s Foothills Athletic Park.
Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops, British Columbia, the reigning Olympic silver medallist, didn’t disappoint with a solid throw of 21.29m, good enough to beat Justin Rodhe by almost a single meter.
Armstrong however told me afterwards that he felt he needs to be in the 22m range to contend for an Olympic medal.

Yohan Blake (Erik Van Leeuwen, Wikimedia Commons)
The city of Edmonton put on a fantastic show Saturday for the Donovan Bailey Invitational. Unable to show off the city last year due to poor weather, many elite athletes were able to show off their skills at Edmonton’s Foote Field today.
Among the high quality athletes who performed in Edmonton Saturday were 100m champion Yohan Blake of Jamaica, who at 22 years of age, is set to give Olympic champion and fellow countryman Usain Bolt a definite run for his money in the most popular event at the Olympic Games. Blake ran 10.05 seconds Saturday, obviously not good enough to win Olympic Gold, but strong enough to win the most significant international track and field event on Canadian soil this year.

The city of Edmonton is going to be hosting a major event in three years.
According to Athletics Canada, Edmonton has been awarded the 2015 Pan American Junior Track and Field Championships. The competition will take place at Edmonton’s Foote Field.
Foote Field is also the host site of the annual Donovan Bailey Invitational. This year’s elite track meet is on July 16.
Athletics Alberta Executive Director Peter Ogilvie, an outstanding friend of Prospect Magazine, will play a key role in organizing the event. Edmonton defeated a bid from Kamloops, British Columbia.
The 2011 Pan American Junior Track and Field Championships took place in Miramar, Florida, with Canada winning 14 medals. The 2013 Pan American Junior Track and Field Championships will take place in Lima, Peru.

Dylan Armstrong (Wilson Wong, Wikimedia Commons)
This weekend is a big tuneup for Canadian Olympic medal hopeful Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops, British Columbia. The reigning Diamond League Champion is set to compete in the 2012 Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon (Saturday, NBC, 1pm) , a major track and field event in Armstrong’s preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Armstrong will also be competing this weekend against a very deep field–reigning Olympic Gold medallist Tomasz Majewski of Poland, and Americans Ryan Whiting (World Indoor Champion), Christian Cantwell (2009 World Champion) and Reese Hoffa (2007 World Champion). Hoffa has the seasonal best throw of 21.73m.
Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:
Saturday–ATP–French Open Tennis– Men’s Third Round–(13) Juan Monaco–ARG vs. (19) Milos Raonic–CAN–9am–TSN–For the first time in his career, Canadian Milos Raonic has advanced past the first round of the French Open. In his win Thursday, Raonic defeated American Jesse Levine 6-4, 7-5, 6-2. Levine, a native of Ottawa, has publicly stated he considers himself 100% American, making him a present day Greg Rusedski (represented Great Britain despite being born in Montreal), as a player that turned away completely from his Canadian roots. Monaco will be the slight favourite due to his experience on the clay. He has been on the ATP Tour now since 2004 and the clay is his best surface.

Canadian figure skater Patrick Chan of Ottawa, Ontario is the 2011 winner of the Lou Marsh Award, presented to Canada’s top athlete.
Chan won the 2011 World Figure Skating Championships in Moscow and the 2011 International Skating Union Grand Prix Final in Quebec City.
Other key events Chan won this past year were his fourth consecutive Canadian Figure Skating Championships at Victoria, British Columbia in January, Skate Canada at Mississauga, Ontario, and the Trophee Eric Bompard in Paris, France.
Chan is the first Canadian to win the Lou Marsh Award of Chinese-Canadian descent. He beat out speed skater Christine Nesbitt of London, Ontario, the World Champion in the women’s 1000m at Inzell, Germany and Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops, British Columbia, the silver medallist in the men’s shot put at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics in Daegu, South Korea.
Heading into the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, Chan is expected to contend for a Gold medal, alongside Daisuke Takahashi and Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan, Javier Fernandez of Spain, Evan Lysacek of the United States and Evgeni Plushenko of Russia.

It was an historic night for Baseball Canada at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
For the first time in the history of the Pan American Games, Canada has won the Gold medal in the sport of baseball.
On Tuesday night, Canada defeated the United States 2-1. Down 1-0 in the sixth inning, Jimmy Van Ostrand of Richmond, British Columbia hit a two run double that scored Chris Robinson of London, Ontario and Tim Smith of Toronto.
Andrew Albers of North Battleford, Saskatchewan got the win and former Edmonton Crackercat Scott Richmond got the save.

Dylan Armstrong (Wilson Wong, Wikimedia Commons)
Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops, British Columbia, has won Canada’s first medal at the World Track and Field Championships in Daegu, South Korea.
Armstrong delivered a throw in the shot put of 21.64 meters to win a Silver medal.
German David Storl won the Gold medal with a throw of 21.78 metres. Andrei Mikhnevich of Belarus won the Silver medal with a throw of 21.64 metres.
Storl’s throw was a personal best and will be a Gold medal contender at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. At only the age of 21, he has won the silver at the 2001 European Indoor Championship in Paris. His performance in Daegu came after a solid junior career where he was the 2008 World Junior Champion in Bydgoszcz, Poland and the 2007 World Youth Champion in Ostrava, Czech Republic.
Armstrong is a winner of three Diamond League Grand Prix events in Doha, Qatar, Rome and Birmingham.
In other action, Usian Bolt of Jamaica won the 200m, after his embarrassing disqualification in the 100m last weekend.

Yohan Blake (Bing Images)
The International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships in Athletics kicked off this weekend in Daegu, South Korea.
The biggest headline wasn’t who won, but who didn’t.
In an interesting surprise, Usain Bolt, the defending Olympic and World Champion from Jamaica, was disqualified with a false start. Under the new IAAF rules, one false start and you’re out. The rule change puts significant added pressure on each sprinter who competes.
The winner turned out to be Yohan Blake of Jamaica with a time of 9.92. American Walter Dix was second with a time of 10.08 followed by Kim Collins of Saint Kitts and Nevis, with a time of 10.09.

Dylan Armstrong (Wilson Wong, Wikimedia Commons)
Canada and the United States have something in common.
We each have an outstanding athlete with the last name of Armstrong. They have the old cyclist named Lance. We have the shot putter who is close to Olympic glory named Dylan.
On the weekend, Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops, British Columbia won a Diamond League competition in Birmingham, England, by posting a throw of 21.55 meters. The 2008 Olympic champion Tomasz Majewski of Poland finished second with a throw of 20.9 meters, while the 2009 World Champion Christian Cantwell of the United States finished third with a throw of 20.86 meters.
Armstrong has won three of the four Diamond League competitions in 2011. He won in Rome and Doha earlier in the year. Cantwell won the only other Diamond League competition in Lucerne, Switzerland on June 30.
Armstrong leads the Diamond League Standings with 12 points. Cantwell and Majewski are tied for second with five points. Armstrong’s throw of 22.21 meters at the Canadian Track and Field Championships in Calgary on June 25 continues to be a world best for all shot putters in 2011.
The next competition is in Monaco on July 22. The World Track and Field Championships in men’s shot put goes at 4am Mountain Time on September 2 from Daegu, South Korea.
In the men’s 100m dash, Asafa Powell of Jamaica had a time of 9.91 seconds to beat countryman Nesta Carter by 0.02 seconds.

Dylan Armstrong (Wilson Wong, Wikimedia Commons)
Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops, British Columbia is in excellent form heading into the 2011 World Track and Field Championships in Daegu, South Korea.
Today at the Foothills Athletic Park in Calgary, Armstrong set a Canadian record in the men’s shot put by recording a throw of 22.21 meters during the Canadian National Track and Field Championships.
Timothy Nedow of Brockville, Ontario won silver with a throw of 18.69 metres and Andrew Smith of Carrot River, Saskatchewan finished third with a throw of 18.24 metres.
Randy Barnes of the United States has the men’s shot put world record. His throw of 23.12 at a track meet in Los Angeles in 1990 still stands twenty-one years later.
This is the first time Armstrong has reached the 22 meter barrier, Earlier this year in San Diego, California, he set a Canadian record in throwing 21.72 metres.
Armstrong’s throw of 22.21 metres was also the longest throw for all shot putters worldwide in 2011. American Reese Hoffa had the previous best mark of 21.87 metres that he set in Hengelo, Netherlands on May 28.
In other action, Perdita Felicien of Oshawa, Ontario, won her tenth Canadian title in winning the women’s 100m hurdle competition.

Dylan Armstrong (Wilson Wong, Wikimedia Commons)
With the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London just over a year away, Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops, British Columbia is starting to become the face of not only just the Canadian Track and Field team, but the entire Canadian Olympic team as well.
Armstrong, 30, won the men’s shotput competition at the Samsung DL Golden Gala event in Rome, Italy, today, with a throw of 21.60 metres.
The throw was 0.4 metres further than Tomasz Majewski of Poland, the Polish Olympic Gold medallist.
Reese Hoffa of the United States, who won the World Championship in 2007 in Osaka, Japan won bronze with a throw of 21.13 metres.
American Christian Cantwell, the Olympic silver medallist and 2009 World Champion in Berlin, Germany, was the only other shot putter to throw over 21 metres, as he threw 21.09m.
Armstrong set a personal best and World seasonal best for 2011, by throwing 21. 72 metres to win an event earlier this year in San Diego. Armstrong also leads the 2011 World Diamond League Shot Put standings, as he won an event earlier this month in Doha, Qatar.
