Weekend Sports Preview–MLB Playoffs, NHL, NFL, CFL–October 15-16, 2011

Devan Dubnyk (Barry Gutierrez, Associated Press)

Heading into the weekend, there is one particular statistic that stands out to me over all the others.

After eight days in the NHL’s regular season, the Edmonton Oilers are tied with the Detroit Red Wings for the fewest goals allowed in the entire league! That’s right folks, the Oilers and Red Wings have only disallowed three goals each.

Oilers’ goaltenders Devan Dubnyk and Nikolai Khabibulin have actually only given up two regulation goals between them. Dubnyk gave up a softy to Kris Letang in the Oilers’ 2-1 shootout win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday, while Khabibulin gave up a regulation goal to Matt Cullen in Edmonton’s 2-1 shootout loss to Minnesota on Thursday.

On Saturday night, the Oilers will entertain the Vancouver Canucks at Rexall Place. They will have a tough time containing Daniel and Henrik Sedin though, who have combined for 114 points in 123 games in their career versus the Oilers. Game time is 8pm and can be seen on CBC.

Brewers pound their way to victory in NLCS

Monday, October 10th, 2011

Prince Fielder (Barbara Moore, Wikimedia Commons)

The Milwaukee Brewers recorded six runs in the fifth inning en route to a 9-6 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in Game One of the National League Championship Series on Sunday.

Down 5-2, the Brewers recorded a League Championship Series record by collecting five extra base hits in one  inning. Prince Fielder and Yuniesky Betancourt each recorded two run home runs, while Jerry Hairston Jr., Jonathan Lucroy and Ryan Braun all doubled.

It was a subpar performance by Brewers’ starter Zack Grienke, who gave up six runs to the Cardinals in six innings, including a three run home run in the fourth inning by shortstop David Freese.

The Brewers have been criticized for their excessive celebrations. Other than Nyjer Morgan’s controversial comments after the Brewers victory over the Arizona Diamondacks when Jamie Campbell of Rogers Sportsnet needed to apologize, I haven’t had any problem with it.

Game two from Milwaukee is tonight. Two former Blue Jays will get the start for each team– Edwin Jackson for St. Louis and Shawn Marcum for Milwaukee. Marcum struggled mightily against the Diamondbacks in the NLDS, so it will be interesting to see if he can rebound.

Cardinals and Diamondbacks force Game 5

Over the next two days we will see three dramatic baseball games where it is going to come down to one ball game to determine who will advance to the League Championship Series.

Yesterday, the St. Louis Cardinals forced a fifth and deciding game against the Philadelphia Phillies and the Arizona Diamondbacks forced a fifth and deciding game against the Milwaukee Brewers. Both game fives will take place Friday night with the winners advancing to the NLCS.

In St. Louis yesterday, Cardinals’ third baseman David Freese came into the spotlight and collected a double and a home run in a 5-3 St. Louis victory. Despite going 0-for-4, Cardinals’ first baseman Albert Pujols was excellent defensively. Cardinals’ starter Edwin Jackson gave up two first inning runs, but the shut the Phillies’ down over his next five innings of work.

In Phoenix last night, the Diamondbacks got another grand slam. Third baseman Ryan Roberts collected one in the first inning in a 10-6 slugfest.  Centerfielder Chris Young also became the first Diamondback player in postseason history to hit two home runs in a game.

Tonight the New York Yankees host the Detroit Tigers in Game Five of the ALDS. The Yankees are going with Ivan Nova and the Tigers are going with Doug Fister.

NLDS Previews

John Axford (Wikimedia Commons)

The American League Divisional Series started yesterday afternoon with the Tampa Bay Rays hammering the Texas Rangers 9-0 in Arlington.

It is now time to focus our attention today on the senior circuit.

The most intriguing series for me among the four will take place in Milwaukee. The Brewers host the Arizona Diamondbacks at noon today. The Brewers have Canadian content– closer John Axford is from Simcoe, Ontario, and General Manager Doug Melvin is from Chatham, Ontario. They are joined by backup catcher George Kottaras of Scarborough, Ontario, who hit for the cycle in a game this year, and backup third baseman Taylor Green of Comox, British Columbia. Also, we can’t forget centerfielder Nyjer Morgan who played in the Western Hockey League with the Regina Pats.

As for the Diamondbacks, nobody expected them to win their division and get by the San Francisco Giants. Kirk Gibson should win the National League Manager of the Year, Ian Kennedy (21-4, 2.88 ERA) could win the Cy Young and Justin Upton should be in the conversation for N.L. MVP, however, that nod will probably go to Los Angeles Dodgers’ centerfielder Matt Kemp.

Blue Jays make blockbuster deals

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

Colby Rasmus (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

With the Toronto Blue Jays thirteen games back of the Boston Red Sox in the American League East, it came as absolutely no surprise to me that Blue Jays’ General Manager Alex Anthopoulos  made blockbuster deals today.

First, Anthopoulos traded reliever Jason Frasor and pitching prospect Zach Stewart to the Chicago White Sox for Canadian third baseman Mark Teahen and starting pitcher Edwin Jackson.

The Blue Jays then shipped Jackson, outfielder Corey Patterson, pitcher Mark Rzepczynski and possible closer Octavio Dotel to the St. Louis Cardinals for outfielder Colby Rasmus, and pitchers P.J. Walters, and former Blue Jays Brian Tallet and Trever Miller.

Rasmus is the best player the Blue Jays are receiving in the deal. He is batting .246 with 11 home runs and 40 runs batted in after hitting .276 with 23 home runs and 66 runs batted in during 2010. He became expendable a little bit in St. Louis’ lineup who has seen great seasons from Jon Jay, Matt Holliday and Lance Berkman.

Teahen, has represented Canada at the World Baseball Classic because his father is from St. Mary’s, Ontario, is struggling significantly offensively (.203, 3 HR, 11 RBIs) with the White Sox this year, and will probably be used in a backup utility role coming off the bench when needed. Teahen, is very versatile, as he has Major League experience through the infield and outfield.
