Significant names lose on day one of Wimbledon

The biggest news on Monday was not just who advanced to round two, but who was eliminated from round one.

Three significant names are out–four-time Wimbledon Champion Venus Williams of the United States, along with two male seeds in the top twelve–sixth seed Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, the 2010 Wimbledon finalist and the eleventh seed John Isner of the United States.

Williams, has been battling Sjogren’s syndrome, was completely dominated by Elena Vesnina 6-1, 6-3.

Berdych meanwhile lost to Ernests Gulbis of Latvia in three straight tie-breakers. Despite being ranked 87th in the world, Gulbis has been as high as 21st and has advanced to the quarterfinals of the French Open.

Isner, who has a history of playing marathon tennis, went to five sets again on Monday before losing in five sets to Alejandro Falla of Colombia.
