FIFA has suspended Canadian women’s soccer star Christine Sinclair four games for displaying unruly behaviour after the semi-finals of the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Sinclair reportedly told the media after Canada’s 4-3 loss to the United States, that her team felt “cheated”. Controversy developed late in the second half of Canada’s loss, when Canadian goaltender Erin McLeod was penalized for holding on to the soccer ball for too long. It is a penalty that is rarely called, if at all, in the sport of soccer. Canada went on to win the bronze medal after a 1-0 win over France.
FIFA made the decision after a disciplinary case in Switzerland.
The Canadian Soccer Association has requested more information about the reasons for FIFA’s decision and will not comment about the controversial suspension at the present time.
