Stampeders say goodbye to four players

Sunday, June 24th, 2012

The Calgary Stampeders have made four significant moves just a week left before the start of the regular season.

According to TSN, the Stampeders released wide receiver Ken-Yon Rambo along with non-import quarterback Brad Sinopoli, decided to leave defensive end Ameet Pall, their 2012 first round draft pick off the final roster, and traded defensive back Geoff Tisdale to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for a third round draft choice in 2014.

The most significant transaction was General Manager John Hufnagel’s decision to release Rambo. The eight year veteran was eighth overall in franchise history in receptions (406) and receiving yards (5995). Last year, Rambo was third on the Stampeders with 695 receiving yards and tied for the team lead in touchdown receptions with five. Rambo also has had NFL experience with the Dallas Cowboys and New York Jets.

Stamps lose opener in CFL season

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011

It was not a strong cohesive performance by the Calgary Stampeders in their regular season debut on Canada Day Friday.

The Calgary Stampeders lost 23-21 to the Toronto Argonauts and it was the kicking game that was the most significant difference at McMahon Stadium.

Rob Maver only went one for four in field goal attempts, missing opportunities from 21 and 34 yards. Argonauts’ kicker Noel Prefontaine, on the other hand went three for three, including converting a 43 yard field goal attempt with 22 seconds left to give the Argonauts two key points.

The poor special teams performance by the Stampeders did not only come from Maver. Stampeders’ kick returner Larry Taylor fumbled the ball early in the second half, that led to a Prefontaine field goal to put the Argonauts up 10-5.

Offensively, the Stampeders missed many great opportunities to score touchdowns over field goals. Henry Burris seemed to be out of sync with his offense at key times. Burris had 293 yards passing, and combined with Joffrey Reynolds for 107 yards on the ground, but were not able to execute when it mattered most.

In the third segment of a four part series, it’s time to analyze the Calgary Stampeders for the 2011 Canadian Football League season.

I see the Stampeders battling the Saskatchewan Roughriders for first place in the CFL’s Western Division. Both teams have significantly stronger depth than the Edmonton Eskimos and British Columbia Lions.

The most significant acquisitions for Calgary in the off-season were linebacker Tim St. Pierre from the Edmonton Eskimos, defensive back Geoff Tisdale from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and kick returner Larry Taylor from the Montreal Alouettes. St. Pierre was the Eskimos’ Most Outstanding Special Teams player in 2010, while Taylor was the 2009 CFL Most Outstanding Player Award winner.

Stampeders lose Cornerback Dwight Anderson to Montreal

The Calgary Stampeders have lost one of their top defensive players over the last three years to free agency.

On Wednesday, the Montreal Alouettes announced the signing of cornerback Dwight Anderson.

Anderson was third in the CFL in interceptions last year with five, and led the CFL with two touchdowns from interceptions. The fifth year import from the University of South Dakota also had 49 tackles in 2010.

Originally from Spanish Town, Jamaica, Anderson’s numbers have decreased a little in recent years. At 31 years of age, he had 54 tackles in 2008, 55 tackles in 2009 and only 49 tackles this past year.

Other significant achievements for Anderson while with the Stampeders from 2008-10, was winning the Grey Cup in 2008, being named a Western Division All-Star in 2009 and 2010, and the Stampeders’ most outstanding defensive player in 2009.
