Woods win at WGC makes him favourite for the Masters

Monday, March 11th, 2013

Tiger Woods (Angela George, Wikimedia Commons)

Tiger Woods came out with a statement victory this past weekend in Florida. At the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championships in Miami, Woods shot a -19.

At one time Woods was in fact a -21 before recording two bogeys on the final three holes.

I know Hunter Mahan, Brandt Snedeker, Steve Stricker and Matt Kuchar have also had solid starts to the 2013 PGA season, but none of them can beat Tiger when he is at his very best.

Woods was so dominant this weekend, he had 27 birdies in 72 holes of golf. That is averaging one birdie every three holes. He also seldom had a lead that was ever in doubt as of day two. Graeme McDowell was close at times, at Steve Stricker had a good finish, but it was not close enough.

Weekend Sports Preview–March 9 & 10–World Baseball Classic, Brier, NHL, NBA & PGA

Friday, March 8th, 2013

Friday can be summed up in one word for Canadian baseball. Embarrassing. Team Canada’s pitching deserved a failing grade in a 14-4 loss to Italy. With the loss, Canada’s hopes are all but dashed as it is highly unlikely they will advance to the second round.

How bad was it for Team Canada? Well, the ten run mercy rule came into effect after Canada gave up five runs in the eighth.

Weekend Sports Preview–Curling, NBA, NHL, PGA & NASCAR

Saturday, February 23rd, 2013

The playoffs are now set for the 2013 Scotties Tournament of Hearts. After a solid week, Manitoba’s Jennifer Jones made history Friday night in Kingston, Ontario, by becoming the first female skip to go a perfect 12-0 in the round robin of the national curling championship. Manitoba will now play Ontario’s Rachel Homan in the 1-2 playoff game (Saturday, TSN, 5:00 p.m.) with the winner advancing to the final (Sunday, TSN, 5:00 p.m.) and the loser playing the winner of the 3-4 game between British Columbia’s Kelly Scott and Canada’s Heather Nedohin (Saturday, TSN, 12:00 p.m.) in the semi-final (Sunday, TSN, 7:00 a.m.).

Webb Simpson wins 2012 United States Open

Sunday, June 17th, 2012

Webb Simpson (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

For the first time in five years a golfer shooting over par won the United States Open.

American Webb Simpson shot a +1 over his four rounds of golf at the Olympic Club in San Francisco to be a major winner for the first time in his career. Argentina’s Angel Cabrera was the last golfer to shoot over par at the United States Open in 2007 when he went +5 to win at the Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh.

Simpson was +5 over the first two rounds, but shot -2 on two consecutive days over the weekend to win the second major of the year. The co-leaders heading into the day, American Jim Furyk (2003 U.S. Open Champion) and Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell were a combined +7 on Sunday.

Simpson beat McDowell and round one leader Michael Thompson by a stroke.

This is Simpson’s third victory on the PGA Tour. Last year he won at the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina and the Duetsche Bank Championship in Boston, part of the PGA’s FedEx Cup Playoffs. He also played a key role for the American win over the Internationals at the 2011 President’s Cup in Australia.

Furyk & McDowell tied at the U.S. Open

Saturday, June 16th, 2012

Jim Furyk (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

For the second consecutive day American Jim Furyk has the lead at the United States Open. This time however he is sharing the lead with only one golfer instead of two.

Furyk, the 2003 United States Open champion, shot an even par seventy on Saturday to match his round one score on Thursday. He is tied for the lead with Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell, the 2010 United States Open champion, who shot a 2-under par 68.

The third round was definitely moving day. Household names in the golf world such as Ernie Els and Lee Westwood moved up, while round two co-leaders Tiger Woods and David Toms moved down. Westwood shot a 67 and Els shot a 68 to move into contention for the lead. They are tied for fourth place at +2 and are three strokes back of Furyk and McDowell. Woods meanwhile moved down from first to fourteenth after a +5 on Saturday, while Toms dropped to eighteenth after shooting a 76.

Who is Michael Thompson?

Friday, June 15th, 2012

Your first round leader after the first round of the United States Open is American Michael Thompson of Tucson, Arizona.

Thursday at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, Thompson shot a four under par and currently has a three stroke lead on an impressive quintet of golfers–2001 PGA Champion David Toms of the United States, American Nick Watney, who became the second consecutive golfer in a major championship to record a double eagle, 2010 U.S. Open Champion Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland, Justin Rose of England, who won the 2012 WGC Cadillac Championship, and a guy by the name of Tiger Woods, who has won every significant golf tournament in his career.

Clarke continues Northern Ireland dominance in golf

Sunday, July 17th, 2011

Darren Clarke (Paddy Briggs, Wikimedia Commons)

Northern Ireland is now the world capital in golf.

On Sunday, Darren Clarke won the British Open, becoming the third player from Northern Ireland over the last two years to win a Major. Graeme McDowell won the 2010 United States Open and Rory McIlroy won the 2011 United States Open.

Northern Ireland also becomes the first nation outside the United States to have two different golfers win back-to-back majors since Scotland in 1910. That year Alex Smith won the U.S. Open and James Braid won the British Open.

Clarke, also set a record for the golfer to participate in the most British Opens before winning the Claret Jug. This was Clarke’s twentieth appearance at the British Open. Nick Price of Zimbabwe won the British Open in his 15th appearance in 1994.

Clarke, who shot -5, defeated Americans Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson by three strokes.

Mickelson, who started the day at even par, was brilliant on the front nine, shooting a -5, and got to -6 on the tenth. But then he had four bogeys in six holes on the back nine to put him out of contention.

Weekend Sports Preview–British Open, CFL, MLB, Women’s World Cup

Friday, July 15th, 2011

Darren Clarke (Paddy Briggs, Wikimedia Commons)

When Darren Clarke’s wife Heather died of cancer in 2006, the entire golf community mourned. But in the last five years, Clarke’s life has turned around a little. Last year, he got engaged to Miss Northern Ireland Alison Campbell, and after round two of the British Open on Friday, Clarke and American Lucas Glover are tied for the lead at -4.

Clarke, who is 42 years of age, is trying to become the third golfer from Northern Ireland to win a major. Graeme McDowell won the 2010 United States Open and Rory McIlroy won the 2011 United States Open.

Glover, meanwhile, is no stranger to major success himself, as he won the 2009 United States Open at Bethpage Black in New York.

However, Clarke and Glover are just the co-leaders in southeast England and have a long ways to go. A remarkable 31 players are within four strokes of the lead. Martin Kaymer and Miguel Angel Jimenez are in a group at -3, Americans Tom Lehman, Davis Love III and Dustin Johnson are in a group at -2, Adam Scott, Phil Mickelson and English amateur Tom Lewis are in a group at -1, and Y.E. Yang, Zach Johnson, Steve Stricker, Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia are in a group at even.

TSN’s coverage begins at 4am Saturday morning. I’m waking up when Garcia is teeing off, at 5:25am Mountain Time.

McIlroy wins U.S. Open

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

Rory McIlroy (Bing Images)

It could have been considered one of the most dominating golf performances ever.

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, currently 8th in the world, won the 111th United States Open this afternoon at Congressional (outside of Washington, D.C.) in overwhelming fashion.

McIlroy shot a two-under 69 to beat Australian Jason Day by eight strokes.

McIlroy’s -16 is the best ever score over four rounds at the United States Open, breaking the previous record of -12 set by Tiger Woods in 2000 at Pebble Beach.

For the second consecutive day, McIlroy protected his large lead he built on Friday beautifully. He birdied the first, fourth, tenth and sixteenth holes, while only bogeying the twelfth and seventeenth holes. On the tenth, McIlroy came a few inches away from recording a remarkable hole in one.

McIlroy shoots -6 in 1st round of US Open

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Rory McIlroy (Andrew Redington, Getty Images)

Rory McIlroy seems to have put a bad final round at the Masters behind him.

Today in the first round of the United States Open at the Congressional Golf Course near Washington, D.C., McIlroy became the first golfer at the U.S. Open in 35 years to take a three stroke lead after 18 holes when she shot a dazzling 6-under 65.

McIlroy, from Holywood, Northern Ireland, had a bogey-free round. He birdied the first, fourth, sixth, twelfth, seventeenth and eighteenth holes.

But the two golfers who are tied for second, are definitely very strong formidable opponents. Y.E. Yang of South Korea won the 2009 PGA Championship and Charl Schwartzel of South Africa won the Masters this past April. Both are -3.

Other notable names under par include defending British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa (-2), 2008 Canadian Open Champion Chez Reavie of the United States (-1), 2009 British Open Champion Stewart Cink of the United States (-1), 2010 U.S. Open Champion Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland (-1) and 1997 PGA Champion Davis Love III of the United States.

K.J. Choi wins Players Championship

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

K.J. Choi (Wikimedia Commons)

For the fourth consecutive year, a golfer not from the United States won the Players Championship.

Sunday outside of Jacksonville, Florida, K.J. Choi of South Korea defeated American David Toms by a stroke to win golf’s fifth “unofficial” major.

The last American to win the Players Championship was Phil Mickelson in 2007.

Choi won in a playoff by recording a par on the 17th hole. Toms recorded a bogey after missing a par putt from three and a half feet.

It was remarkable that Toms missed the easy putt in the playoff because he drained a long birdie putt to force the playoff on the eighteenth hole.

With the win, Choi wins $1.71 million.

Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland had the lead after the third round, but shot a 79 in round four, and finished tied for 33rd.

The top three golfers– Choi and Toms at -13 and American Paul Goydos at -11 are all over forty years of age.

The next most significant event on the PGA Tour is the Memorial in Dublin, Ohio, just outside of Columbus. This is the event that is hosted annually by Jack Nicklaus. That takes place from June 2-5.

Weekend Sports Preview May 14-15–NHL Conference Finals, NBA Playoffs, MLB, NLL Champion’s Cup, Players’ Championship

Saturday, May 14th, 2011

Ryan Kesler (Bing Images)

A jammed packed weekend of sports takes this weekend. The Vancouver Canucks will host the San Jose Sharks in game one of the Western Conference Final (Sunday, 6pm, CBC).

This is the first Western Conference Final for the Canucks since they went to the Stanley Cup Final in 1994 and lost to the New York Rangers in seven games. But it is interesting that the Canucks’ playoff most valuable player is a Yankee. Ryan Kesler leads all players in the playoffs with 15 points. He also leads the Canucks in the playoffs in +/- with a +6, power play goals (3), short handed assists (1) and game winning goals (2).

Weekend Sports Recap–October 2-3

Graeme McDowell (Bing Images)

The Weekend Sports Recap is a day later than normal because of the rain in Wales.

The Ryder Cup was delayed 24 hours because of the rain Friday in Wales. That’s why I blaming the Welsh skies on this one.

The Ryder Cup wrapped up yesterday, and it was extremely captivating television for about half an hour.  When American Rickie Fowler decided to get hot at the finish (eagled the 16th, and birdried the seventeenth and eighteenth) against Italian Edoardo Molinari, the Americans recorded a key half point to tie the Cup at 13.5 points.

Weekend Sports Preview October 1-3

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Tiger Woods (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

I won’t be able to get up in the middle of the night this weekend to watch golf (have a darn head cold that has got in the way), but will get up as early as I possible can the next three mornings.

The Ryder Cup is this weekend from Newport, Wales. The best golfers from Europe play the best golfers from the United States in a fourball and foursome competition Friday and Saturday, then on Sunday, there are exciting head-to-head singles matches for spectators to enjoy.

But, amazingly, NBC’s coverage on Saturday will be on tape delay.

Here are the events I’ll be watching this weekend.
