Brian Urlacher (Wikimedia Commons)
One of the best linebackers in the National Football League has announced his retirement from professional football.
On Wednesday Brian Urlacher, who for the last 13 years, has been a dynamic force on the Chicago Bears’ defense, declared he did not feel he could perform at a very high level this upcoming season.
Urlacher, 34, was the 2000 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, 2005 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and an eight time Pro Bowl player.
However it was clear that injuries caught up to Urlacher. This past year a hamstring injury kept him out for a quarter of the season.

Nikolai Khabibulin (Dan Nicholas, Wikimedia Commons)
From every angle possible, it is a great time to be an Edmonton Oilers fan. The kids are producing. The veterans are producing. The entire team is buying into Tom Renney’s defensive-minded system and Nikolai Khabibulin has been completely spectacular.
On Saturday night, the Oilers (8-2-2), visit the Phoenix Coyotes at Jobing.com Arena (CBC, 8pm). Edmonton is currently tied with the Chicago Blackhawks for first place in the Western Conference. They have also only given up 18 goals all season long, five fewer than second place Dallas at 23 goals. The recent play of Khabibulin led Brad May of Rogers Sportsnet to say last night that Khabibulin right now “is the best goaltender in the NHL.”
The Coyotes meanwhile are trying to get to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the third year in a row. The last two seasons they have lost to the Detroit Red Wings in the Western Conference Quarterfinals. So far in 2011-12, they are 6-4-2, and tied with the Nashville Predators, Colorado Avalanche, San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings for fifth place in the Western Conference.
The Coyotes’ top player this season is Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta native Ray Whitney, who leads Phoenix with five goals, seven assists.
Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Well the Super Bowl is officially in the books. I was at Kilkenny’s Irish Pub last night in Northwest Calgary, and had a good time indeed. I won two Flames tickets to an upcoming game next month against the Phoenix Coyotes and a San Diego Chargers hat for getting their trivia question right.
The game itself was extremely interesting– and for the fifth year in a row an excellent battle that went down to the wire.
Green Bay won 31-25 over the Pittsburgh Steelers. I was right in the fact that Green Bay would win by six. I was just four points out on each side.
A major reason why Green Bay won was turnovers. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was intercepted twice and running back Rashard Mendenhall fumbled. The Steelers’ mistakes led to three Green Bay major scores– two touchdown passes from Aaron Rodgers to Greg Jennings and an interception return for a touchdown by Packers’ safety Nick Collins.

Super Bowl XLV takes place Sunday. So, there’s no better time than to do a breakdown of the NFC Champion Green Bay Packers and the AFC Champion Pittsburgh Steelers.
Both the Steelers and Packers have rich histories in the NFL. Green Bay won the first two Super Bowls in 1967 and 1968, and then with Brett Favre leading the way, Green Bay knocked off New England in Super Bowl XXXI in 1997.
The Steelers have won six times. Led by Terry Bradshaw, they won four times in six years from 1975-1980. Then over the last decade, Pittsburgh defeated Seattle 21-10 in 2006 and Arizona 27-23 in 2009.
Super Bowl XLV should be the highest attended game in Super Bowl history. A total of 103,985 fans watched the Pittsburgh Steelers defeat the Los Angeles Rams 31-19 in 1980 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Dallas’s Cowboys Stadium has a capacity of 111,000, and even if the weather continues to be poor in Texas, expect a sell out.

Green Bay Packers (Wikimedia Commons)
One of the best things about waking up in the morning is that we learn something new each and everyday.
Today I learned from former New York Giants running back Tiki Barber.
Working for Yahoo! Sports, Barber reported that the G on the Packer helmets do not stand for the obvious, (which is Green Bay), but for Greatness.

Samantha Stosur (Wikimedia Commons)
I’m in the process of sleeping considerably during the day because there is outstanding tennis at night. The Australian Open and the National Football League’s Conference Championships will dominate my television viewing this weekend.
Here is what I’ll be watching:
Saturday–1am–Australian Open–(5) Samantha Stosur-Australia vs. (25) Petra Kvitova-Czech Republic–Women’s 3rd Round–TSN2–Stosur, the finalist of the 2010 French Open, is the last remaining Australian on the women’s side. Even though Stosur isn’t very big in stature, (5’9″, 140 pounds), she has very muscular legs and is very fit on the court. Her opponent Saturday is rising Czech star Petra Kvitova, who has defeated Caroline Wozniacki and Nadia Petrova in the past year.
Saturday–5pm–NHL–Anaheim Ducks @ Montreal Canadiens–CBC-In a battle of two teams currently in playoff position, the Canadiens (26-17-4) host the Ducks (26-20-4). Anaheim is currently sixth in the west and Montreal is seventh in the east. The Canadiens though are battling the Boston Bruins for first place in the Northeast Division. They’re currently only three points back. The Ducks’ best player this year has been Corey Perry, who has 50 points in 50 games. The Habs, meanwhile, continue to get sparkling goaltending from Carey Price, who has a 2.34 goals against average with four shutouts, and oh, yeah, he’ll be playing in the NHL All-Star Game in Carolina next weekend.

Four teams are left in the NFL Playoffs. This past weekend there were two very exciting football games and two dull ones.
The battles in the AFC were terrific. Hats off to the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday, and the New England Patriots and New York Jets on Sunday.
The 31-24 score in the Baltimore-Pittsburgh matchup Saturday afternoon was very deceiving. The Steelers knocked off the Ravens, sure. But the Ravens were able to score 24 points despite only putting up 126 total yards of offense. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger was significantly better than Ravens QB Joe Flacco. Roethlisberger put up 101 more yards passing.
Defensively, the Steelers were led by safety Ryan Clark, who had an interception and a forced fumble.

Anthony Calvillo (Bing Images)
This is one weekend that is marked on every Canadian sports fan’s calendar from coast to coast. On Sunday, the 98th Grey Cup Game will take place at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, and for the second consecutive year the teams will be the Saskatchewan Roughriders (10-8) and Montreal Alouettes (12-6).
This will be the third time that a team from Montreal and a team from Regina would have played in the Grey Cup. In 1931, the Montreal AAA Winged Wheelers defeated the Regina Rams 22-0 to win the 19th Grey Cup Championship. It was the first Grey Cup where a forward pass was allowed and the first title game where a point could be scored from a drop kick or place kick. The Wheelers recorded three touchdowns from Pete Jotkus, Kenny Grant and Wally Whitty en route to the shutout.
Then last year, the Montreal Alouettes squeaked out a dramatic 28-27 win. Saskatchewan thought they won it when Alouette kicker Damon Duval missed a last second field goal, but amazingly they had 13 men on the field, and Duval was allowed to rekick, and drained a 33 yard attempt.

Bengie Molina (Wikimedia Commons)
It’s the time of year where hockey, baseball, and football (and next week basketball) collides at the same time.
The busiest time of the sports year indeed.
Here is what I’ll be watching:
Friday–6pm–MLB–Game Six, American League Championship Series–New York Yankees @ Texas Rangers–(Rangers lead ALCS 3-2)–Sportsnet One–The Texas Rangers can make their first World Series appearance in franchise history with a victory over the New York Yankees either this evening or tomorrow. Colby Lewis will pitch for the Rangers against Phil Hughes for the Yankees. Despite being named to the American League All-Star Game, Hughes has struggled in the playoffs, posting a 5.72 earned run average in 11 innings to date. The Rangers have been led by a former Jay and a former Expo in the playoffs. Catcher Bengie Molina (Blue Jay in 2006) is batting .385 with two home runs and seven runs batted in. Designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero (Expo from 1996-2003) has 11 hits and is batting .297.
