Three Dinos drafted in the top five of the CFL Draft

Monday, May 6th, 2013

The University of  Calgary Dinos might not have won the Vanier Cup this past season, but were the big winners on Monday in the first round of the 2013 Canadian Football League draft.

A total of three Dinos were drafted among the top five selections on Monday. Defensive tackle Linden Gaydosh was drafted first overall by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He was followed by the Montreal Alouettes selecting linebacker Mike Edem with the third overall pick and the Alouettes selecting Steven Lumbala with the fifth overall pick.

A poor decision by former Edmonton Eskimos General Manager Eric Tillman is a major reason why Montreal had two first round picks in the 2013 draft today, while the Eskimos had none. On September 12, 2012, the Eskimos traded their first and fourth round pick of this year’s draft with kicker Derek Schiavone for kicker Brody McKnight.

The Calgary Stampeders are turning to a former Edmonton Eskimo to improve their defense.

This week they signed import linebacker Rod Davis from the Montreal Alouettes.

Davis has four years of Canadian Football League experience, three with the Edmonton Eskimos and one with the Alouettes.

During his career he has an impressive 184 tackles, 10 sacks, four forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and eight interceptions.

Eskimos name offensive co-ordinators

Saturday, January 26th, 2013

The Edmonton Eskimos are bringing back a big name as their defensive co-ordinator. On Friday, it was confirmed by the Canadian Press that former Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach Greg Marshall will be the team’s defensive co-ordinator for the 2013 season.

Marshall has great experience in the CFL as a defensive co-ordinator, winning a Grey Cup with the Edmonton Eskimos in that role in 2003. He has also held the defensive co-ordinator position in Saskatchewan, Hamilton, Ottawa and Winnipeg.

Tiger-Cats name Austin head coach

Monday, December 17th, 2012

Kent Austin (Dean Shareski, Wikimedia Commons)

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats simply didn’t take very long to find a head coach. On Monday, less than a  week after firing George Cortez, brought Kent Austin back to the Canadian Football League.

Austin had spent the last two years as the head coach at Cornell University. His stock skyrocketed after leading the Saskatchewan Roughriders to the 2007 Grey Cup Championship. With not a lot of significant talent, the Roughriders defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 23-19 for their third Grey Cup in franchise history.

Prior to spending two years at Cornell, Austin went to the NCAA as the offensive co-ordinator at the University of Mississippi, the same university he quarterbacked in the early 1980′s.

The move by the Tiger-Cats to fire George Cortez should not come as a huge surprise because of how horrible Hamilton was defensively last season.

Tiger-Cats fire Cortez

Wednesday, December 12th, 2012

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats inability to play defense in 2012 was a definite factor in head coach George Cortez losing his job this week, but it wasn’t the only factor.

Don’t be surprised if the writing came partially on the wall after the very first game of the season, when Hamilton was blown out by Saskatchewan 43-16.

In that particular game it was clear that Cortez should have challenged a particular play and failed to do so.

The writing seemed to be on the wall after that.

Were the Tiger-Cats supposed to be better? The answer is simply yes. Quarterback Henry Burris led the league with 5367  passing yards, but in the same token, the team gave up 576 points and were a league worst 6-12.

Defense. Oh yeah, a key component in winning games.

Did mooning incident cost Cornish CFL MOP?

Friday, November 23rd, 2012

Jon Cornish (Wikimedia Commons)

The CFL handed out its player awards on Thursday night and Chad Owens, wide receiver of the Toronto Argonauts  was named the most outstanding player for 2012. Owens beat out Jon Cornish, the running back of the Calgary Stampeders, who ended up winning the CFL Most Outstanding Canadian award.

Cornish was trying to become the first Canadian to win the most outstanding player award since Tony Gabriel won the award with the Hamilton Tiger Cats in 1978.

So why did the panel go with a wide receiver over a running back? Well, it’s quite possible it stems from a mooning incident Cornish had with the Saskatchewan Roughrider crowd earlier this year. The CFL was simply not comfortable handing out an award to an athlete who lacked complete judgment in a particular situation.

In other awards, linebacker J.C. Sherritt of the Edmonton Eskimos was the top defensive player, Jovan Olafioye of the British Columbia Lions was the top lineman and wide receiver Chris Matthews of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers was the top rookie.

Eskimos clinch playoff spot with Argonauts win

Friday, November 2nd, 2012

The Edmonton Eskimos are heading to the postseason.

Thursday night at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Swayze Waters hit a game winning 51 yard field goal on the final play of the game as the Toronto Argonauts defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 43-40.

With the loss, the Tiger-Cats were eliminated from postseason contention at 6-12. The Eskimos at 7-10 are in the playoffs and will either crossover and play the Argonauts in the Eastern Division Semi-Final or play the Calgary Stampeders in the Western Division Semi-Final. If Edmonton beats Calgary and B.C. beats Saskatchewan, the Eskimos will stay out west, otherwise they’re headed east.

Ray’s absence might not be good for the Eskimos

Tuesday, October 30th, 2012

It appears the Toronto Argonauts may not be dressing their top lineup in their regular season finale against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats Thursday night at the Rogers Centre.

Instead it looks like they are resting up for the Eastern Semi-Final, where they will either host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Edmonton Eskimos or Saskatchewan Roughriders.

On Tuesday it was confirmed by the Canadian Press, that Toronto Argonaut quarterback (and former Edmonton Eskimo) Ricky Ray will not play in the game, as Argonauts head coach Scott Milanovich has opted to rest Ray.

Milanovich also confirmed that backup quarterbacks Jarious Jackson, Trevor Harris and Zach Collaros are all scheduled to see some time. Now one needs to wonder how many more Argonaut starters will not see any action.

Weekend Sports Preview–October 27 & 28–NFL, CFL, MLB & Short Track Speed Skating

Saturday, October 27th, 2012

The Edmonton Eskimos have a chance of clinching a playoff spot on Sunday when they play the Montreal Alouettes. At 7-9 they sit in last place in the Western Division, but will qualify  for the postseason in the crossover into the East because they will have a better record than the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The Eskimos will not have running back Hugh Charles in their lineup. Charles suffered a knee injury in the Eskimos’ 39-19 loss to the B.C. Lions last Friday. The Eskimos then brought back Cory Boyd this past week to backup Jerome Messam.

Weekend Sports Preview–October 20 & 21–MLB, NFL, Short Track Speed Skating & CFL

Saturday, October 20th, 2012

There will be a sixth game in the National League Championship Series. Last night in St. Louis, the San Francisco Giants stayed alive with a brilliant pitching performance from Barry Zito in a 5-0 win over the Cardinals.

Now the series shifts back to Northern California for Game 6 (Sunday, FOX, 5pm). In order for the Cardinals to win and advance to the World Series, they’ll need to win on the road. Ironically, the Cardinals (38-43) and the Tigers (38-43), were the only two teams this season with losing records on the road to make the playoffs and they are the clubs that are in the best position at the moment to win the World Series.

Eskimos pathetic in loss to Tiger-Cats

Saturday, September 15th, 2012

Forget about the 17-1 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders on July 8. At least in that game the Eskimos defense showed up.

On Saturday at Hamilton’s Ivor Wynne Stadium, the Eskimos offense and defense both deserved marks of a F-. If I could go any lower than a F, I would.

Losing 51-8 to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats is completely incomprehensible. The team is lower than Edmonton in the standings, and they still hammered Edmonton.

My first question is to general manager Eric Tillman. What do you plan on doing now? The team completely sucked on both sides of the football and the energy level and work ethic was extremely poor.

Weekend Sport Preview–September 15-16–CFL, NFL, MLB, IndyCar, LPGA, Davis Cup

Saturday, September 15th, 2012

The Edmonton Eskimos will try to snap a two game losing streak to their provincial rivals, the Calgary Stampeders, when they face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Ivor Wynne Stadium this afternoon (TSN, 1pm).

The Eskimos may be sitting last in the Western Division at 5-5, but with a victory can move an important six points up on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in a possible opportunity to cross-over in the East come playoff time, if they cannot make up ground on the 5-5 Saskatchewan Roughriders.

This week the Eskimos and Tiger-Cats also made a trade. Edmonton acquired fullback Darcy Brown from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for defensive back Ricardo Colclough and a sixth round pick in the 2015 Canadian Football League draft.

Stampeders win key road game against Hamilton

Friday, August 10th, 2012

Calgary Stampeders’ running back Jon Cornish stepped up with a key game Thursday night at Hamilton’s Ivor Wynne Stadium.

After being in the negative category in rushing yards in his last game (-1), and criticizing his offensive line, Cornish was much better last night as he rushed for 170 yards in a 31-20 Calgary win over Hamilton.

With the win, the Stampeders improve to 3-3 while Hamilton fell to 3-3. Just how close is the East at the moment? Hamilton, the Toronto Argonauts and Montreal Alouettes are all tied for first place with similar .500 records.

This was the first time the Stampeders played the Tiger-Cats since the two teams made their famous offseason blockbuster deal that saw quarterback Henry Burris traded from Calgary to Hamilton for quarterback Kevin Glenn and offensive lineman Mark Dewit. Ironically both teams came out sluggish and did not score in the first quarter.

The Stampeders dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring the Tiger-Cats 14-0 on an eight yard touchdown run by Romby Bryant and an eight yard touchdown pass from Glenn to Nik Lewis.

Simon makes CFL history as all-time receiving yards leader

Saturday, June 30th, 2012

Geroy Simon (Wikimedia Commons)

The start of the 2012 Canadian Football League season began last night with an historic record set in Vancouver.

British Columbia Lions wide receiver Geroy Simon passed Milt Stegall of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers as the all-time leader in receiving yards with 15,192.

The Lions slotback had five catches for 105 yards as British Columbia defeated Winnipeg 33-16 in a 2011 Grey Cup rematch.

Travis Lulay ran into the end zone for two major scores and running back Andrew Harris had 116 total yards to give head coach Mike Benevides his first head coaching victory.

Meanwhile earlier in Hamilton, the story at Ivor Wynne Stadium was all about a wide receiver and head coach as well.

Weston Dressler, at only 5’7″, had 13 catches for 180 yards and three touchdowns as Saskatchewan trounced Hamilton 43-16.
