ESPN releases Williams

For as long as I can remember watching Monday Night Football, Hank Williams Jr. has been singing the legendary theme song “Are You Ready for some Football?”, first on ABC, and then on ESPN.

History will come to an end Monday night in Detroit when the Lions host the Chicago Bears. Why? Well, because of controversial comments Williams recently made about President Barack Obama.

During a controversial interview with Fox News, he compared Obama to Adolf Hitler.

ESPN pulled Williams’ opening from their week four broadcast last week in Tampa Bay and announced this week that the network will no longer use him in the opening. Williams, in his reaction, felt ESPN intervened in his freedom of speech.

In my opinion, ESPN had not. Hitler is the most despicable individual in the history of the planet and Williams just cannot say those things without any significant consequences.

ESPN, the NFL and Monday Night Football will move on. Just without Williams.
