Easter Weekend Sports Preview–Masters, World Men’s Curling Championship, Women’s World Hockey Championship, NBA, MLB, NLL

Friday, April 6th, 2012

The Masters will obviously headline my television viewing this  weekend with the very first major of the PGA Season.  Currently Peter Hanson of Sweden (-5) leads U.S. Open Champion Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, former British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa, Ben Crane of the United States and day one leader Lee Westwood of England by a stroke.

Other players in contention are Major winners Zach Johnson, Jim Furyk and Paul Lawrie.

The television coverage for the tournament is Friday at 1pm on TSN, Saturday at 1:30pm on CBS, and Sunday at noon on CBS.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Friday–NLL–Rochester Knighthawks @ Calgary Roughnecks–7pm–I’m heading down to the Scotiabank Saddledome this evening to see the Roughnecks in National Lacrosse League action. At 10-3, the Roughnecks are tied for first place in the West Division with the Colorado Mammoth.  The Roughnecks lead the NLL with 180 goals scored, are led by former Knighthawk Shawn Evans, who leads the team in scoring with 58 points.

Marlins sign Reyes

Monday, December 5th, 2011

Jose Reyes (Wikimedia Commons)

The Marlins have a new name (Miami instead of Florida), a new state of the art ballpark and now a new shortstop.

On Sunday, the Marlins signed Jose Reyes to a 6 year deal worth $106 million. Reyes, who has played his entire career with the New York Mets, batted .337 with seven home runs, 44 runs batted in and 39 stolen bases.

Now the question in Miami is where will Reyes play and what will the team do with Hanley Ramirez, who is already one of the elite shortstops in baseball?

My guess is that Reyes will play shortstop and Ramirez will be asked to make the transition to third base. Even though Ramirez offensively has been a strong Marlin bat over the last few years, he did commit 14 errors last season.

This is the second high profile free agent the Marlins have signed this fall. They also signed closer Heath Bell to a long-term contract from the San Diego Padres.

Marlins sign Bell

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

Heath Bell (Wikimedia Commons)

The Miami Marlins opened up their pocket book on Friday and signed Heath Bell to a three year deal worth $27 million.

It was a key signing by the Marlins as Bell is one of the premier closers in the game. Over the last three seasons for the San Diego Padres, Bell has recorded over 40 saves each season.

But I still cannot get my head around the specifics of the deal. Why? Well, the bottom line is that Bell will only be pressed into duty for an inning or two late in a baseball game– and only if the score is close.

Could the Marlins have spent their money more wisely on signing three or four free agents that have the overall financial worth as Bell at $9 million? I think they could have.

At 72-90 last season, the Fish have major holes to fill at catcher, center field, and starting pitcher.

The Marlins’ signing also reminds me of the time the Blue Jays opened their wallet to sign B.J. Ryan to a five year deal worth $47 million. After one productive season in 2006, Ryan was horrible in 2007 with an earned run average of 12.46. Is a long term multi-million contract to a closer too much of a risk? I think it is, but what do you think?

Giants pick up Bell for stretch run

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

The San Francisco Giants now should have nothing to worry about their bullpen.

On Wednesday they claimed closer Heath Bell off waivers from the San Diego Padres.

Bell is 3-4 with 35 saves and a 2.55 earned run average in 54 appearances. Over the last three seasons Bell has been one of the most dynamic closers in the game. He had 42 saves in 2009 and 47 saves in 2010.

Bell is  the second high profile reliever the Padres have left go since the trade deadline. On July 31 the Padres traded their setup man Mike Adams to the Texas Rangers.

Even though Bell has nasty stuff, there is a high possibility he will not step into the closer role, but rather be the setup man in San Francisco. That is because the Giants already have the fan favourite Brian Wilson in that role already. Wilson has 35 saves himself and has an earned run average of 3.19 in 55 games.

The Giants currently trail the Arizona Diamondbacks by two games in the National League West.

Major League Baseball Preview–National League West

It is in this division where the World Series champion came out of in 2010. The San Francisco Giants knocked off the Texas Rangers 4-1 to win their first championship since 1954.

Even though their pitching staff remains basically intact, the Giants did have to say goodbye to infielders Juan Uribe and Edgar Renteria in the offseason. Uribe, who had 24 home runs and 85 runs batted in last season with the Giants is now with the Los Angeles Dodgers, while Renteria, who was named the World Series Most Valuable Player, is now with the Cincinnati Reds.
