The face of the Seattle Mariners for the last decade is now a New York Yankee. On Monday, the Seattle Mariners traded right fielder Ichiro Suzuki to the New York Yankees with cash for pitchers Danny Farquhar and D.J. Mitchell.
Farquhar spent a brief time with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2011.
In a remarkable move, the New York Yankees and the Mariners made the deal a couple of hours before the teams played against each other at Safeco Field in Seattle last night. The Yankees won 4-1 and Ichiro had a single and a stolen base.
So far this season, Ichiro has only four home runs and 28 runs batted in with a batting average of .261.
I know Ichiro is in the latter stages of his fine Major League career, but I thought Seattle could have got more for him because he is still outstanding defensively and has speed on the base paths. But there was a need for Ichiro in the Big Apple with Brett Gardner out for the year with elbow surgery.

The Seattle Mariners beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 1-0 in a bizarre no-hitter.
A total of six Mariners combined for the 1-0 last night. Starter Kevin Millwood had to leave after six innings due to a groin injury, and he was relieved by Charlie Furbish, Stephen Pryor, Lucas Luetge, former Toronto Blue Jay Brandon League and Tom Wilhelmsen.
The six Mariners pitchers to throw a no-hitter ties a Major League record set in 2003 by the Houston Astros. On June 11, 2003, Roy Oswalt, Pete Munro, Kirk Saarloos, Brad Lidge, Octavio Dotel and Billy Wagner combined for a no-hitter in a 8-0 Houston win over the New York Yankees.
There were two significant similarities in both games. Like Millwood, Oswalt had to leave the game because of an injury (only pitched one inning compared to Millwood’s six), and both games were interleague games.
Pryor got the win for the Mariners Friday night after closing out the seventh by getting Juan Rivera to strike out. The Mariners got their only run on an RBI single by Kyle Seager that scored Ichiro Suzuki.

This week the Oakland Athletics played the Seattle Mariners in Japan to begin the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
The teams split the series, with Seattle winning 3-1 on Wednesday and Oakland winning 4-1 on Thursday. But with there being no television coverage on the national stage and only coverage within the Seattle and Oakland television markets, only the avid sports fan, like those in a fantasy baseball pool, would have realized it.
If you are going to begin your season Mr. Selig, outside the United States in a two game series in a baseball savvy place such as Japan, you would think the rest of the continent would care too?
Apparently not. Which is too bad. If the Yankees played the Red Sox in the first two games of the season, the series would have been a much more monumental story. But they didn’t. Baseball’s number one problem is they have a hierarchical status when it comes to promoting the game. As long as the Yankees and Red Sox continue to lead, and the Cubs continue to lose, those in charge of MLB think the sport is healthy, when it actuality it is far from it.

As reported by my associate Jim Kerr of AnySportAnyTime this morning, the Seattle Mariners were in the process of reaching a streak of futility no professional sports team wants to be involved in– most consecutive losses.
Yikes! Heading into today, the Mariners had lost 17 straight games heading into their game against the New York Yankees.
Well, folks. The streak is over. Wednesday morning the Mariners collected 17 hits, nine off of Yankees’ starter Phil Hughes in a convincing 9-2 win.
Ironically, the Mariners ended their 17 game losing streak in a game where they collectively registered 17 hits.
Outfielders Ichiro Suzuki and Mike Carp each collected four hits in the win. Carp added four home runs. Not surprisingly, the Mariners, who never hit home runs, didn’t get a home run among their 17 hits.
The American League record for most consecutive losses was set by the Baltimore Orioles in 1988 with 21 losses. The Major League record was set by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1961 with 26 losses.

I know it’s only ten games into the season, but the Toronto Blue Jays lost a significant game last night in Seattle.
Leading 7-0 in the seventh, the Blue Jays gave up one run in the seventh, five runs in the eighth and another two runs in the ninth to lose 8-7 in Seattle.

The Texas Rangers were the talk of the American League last year as they surprised many by not only getting by the Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners to win the American League West to win the division, but getting by the New York Yankees to win the American League Championship Series in six games as well.
In comes third baseman Adrian Beltre from Boston and catcher Mike Napoli from the Los Angeles Angels (via Toronto) and out goes ace Cliff Lee to Philadelphia, designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero to Baltimore and closer Frank Francisco to Toronto. Beltre became expendable in Boston when they acquired first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and moved Kevin Youkilis to third. On paper Lee would obviously be the most significant loss, but don’t forget, he only joined the Rangers at the trade deadline last year, when Texas had a huge lead in the division.
