Kerrzy’s Notebook: Have A Hockey Jolly Christmas

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

Whether you were naughty or nice this year, Christmas is finally upon us…but are you in the holiday spirit yet?

If not, I’ve got just the thing for you!

For some people eggnog does the trick and for others it’s repetitive seasonal music, but for many of us, nothing says Christmas like funny holiday-themed viral videos made by sports teams! As soon as you see these gems start to appear, you know the big day is just around the corner…so consider this my present to you!

In honor of the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships getting underway on Boxing Day, let’s start with the WHL’s Edmonton Oil Kings singing “All I Want For Christmas Is You!”

Take it away boys:

(AFTER THE JUMP: The Panthers sing “Jingle Bells” and the Sharks are out with another beauty Christmas vid!)

Nice Guys Finish…

“Nice Guys Finish Last / If You Catch a Jeter Blast / Don’t Let The Taxman Know That, He’ll Tax Your Behind!”

What a whirlwind week it must have been for NY Yankees fan Christian Lopez!

He’s the guy who caught the home run ball that made Derek Jeter the first ever Yankee to reach 3,000 career hits last weekend, and it’s safe to say his life hasn’t been the same since. Rather than hold the ball ransom and try to sell it for hundreds of thousands of dollars (which he would have gotten), Lopez gave it right back, and his generosity was rewarded…and then some!

The team apparently gave him luxury box tickets for the rest of the season (including the postseason) and some team swag, but the story doesn’t end there. A few news organizations reported this week that Lopez could (and probably would) end up being taxed on the gifts he received from the Yankees, a bill that might total as much as $14,000! Like the good sport that he clearly is, Lopez was quoted as saying that he’d pay the taxes if he had to, and “the IRS has a job to do, so I’m not going to hold it against them.”

Well, it turns out that the cell phone salesman won’t have to hold it against the IRS, because someone’s got his back! (After the Jump: More on Lopez, plus a SICK hockey goal & MLS goalie scores in debut) (more…)

Kerrzy’s Notebook: Five Unanswered?!

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

Wow, I didn’t see that coming…

After the first two periods of Wednesday’s World Junior Hockey Championship gold medal game it looked like it was going to be Canada’s night, but as Ryan Ellis and company found out…looks can be deceiving!

A fired up Russian squad scored three times in five minutes to tie the game near the start of the third period, including two goals that came just eleven seconds apart. They put the game away with two more in the closing five, virtually stealing the title out of the hands of the waiting Canadians and stunning the thousands of fans in attendance.

Who would have thought that Canada, coming off a huge win over the United States and playing in a tenth straight final, would fall to pieces like that?

As I write this, hours after the final whistle, I’m still shocked by what I saw! Canada seemed to have it in the bag after two relatively dominant periods and then just fell flat. So what happened out there? (more…)

Holy Roli!

Remember the time the Tampa Bay Lightning are tied for top spot in the Eastern Conference?

That time would be now, thanks to a 1-0 overtime win over the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night, a 34-save shutout for newly acquired goalie Dwayne Roloson. The Lightning picked up Roli the Goalie on the weekend for practically nothing from the New York Islanders, sending him from the bottom of the standings to near the top.

I’ve always liked the way the unassuming Roloson carries himself – when he was with the Oilers, the thing that always stuck out for me was his insistence that he still had years of hockey ahead of him despite his age, since he had shared starting duties for a big chunk of his career. Some people didn’t believe him, but here he is at 41 looking like a young buck. (After the jump: All-Star voting, Ovechkin’s new commercial, Kovalchuk’s brutal night and a WJHC final preview!)
