There will be no Triple Crown winner in 2012 after all.
Despite winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, I’ll Have Another was forced to pull out on Friday with a swollen tendon. One of the greatest Canadian-owned horses of all time also retired.
Affirmed in 1978 remains the last horse to win the Triple Crown. I’ll Have Another, who beat Bodemeister in two of the most compelling horse races I have ever seen to win the first two crowns in 2012. He was also the 4-5 favourite to win tomorrow, especially with the fact that Bodemeister was not going to be competing either.
I’ll Have Another’s chances of making horse racing history got a lot stronger today as it was announced by ESPN that Bodemeister will drop out of the Belmont.
Bodemeister had finished second to I’ll Have Another at the Preakness and Kentucky Derby in two of the most remarkable and exciting horse races I have ever seen. The news was confirmed by Bodemeister’s trainer Bob Baffert who nicknamed his horse after his son, Bode.
I’ll Have Another is capturing significant Canadian attention. The horse’s jockey, Mario Gutierrez spent six years in Vancouver, and its owner is J. Paul Reddam, a Windsor philosopher.

But Saturday delivered a spectacular horse race not just because that Canadian-owned I’ll Have Another won, but because how he won. It was almost a mirror image of the Kentucky Derby as I’ll Have Another caught Bodemeister near the finish line.
When I’ll Have Another won the 2012 Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, many Canadians rejoiced.
Why? Well, because I’ll Have Another had significant Canadian connections. First the horse was owned by J. Paul Reddam of Windsor, Ontario and its jockey was Mexican Mario Gutierrez who has spent significant amount of time riding and training in Vancouver, British Columbia.
I’ll Have Another’s odds were 15-1 heading into the race and in the early going seemed to struggle but had an excellent finish and breezed past pre-race co-favourite Bodemeister in front of a record crowd of 165, 307 fans.
