Eagles & Jaguars make coaching decisions

Thursday, January 17th, 2013

Chip Kelly (Wikimedia Commons)

The Philadelphia Eagles and Jacksonville Jaguars have decided on coaches for the 2012 National Football season.

The Eagles have gone with a familiar face, choosing Chip Kelly, out of the  University of Oregon. Kelly, an offensive minded coach should appease Michael Vick, LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson, but the bottom line is will the 2012 Philadelphia Eagles be able to finish long drives?

This past season, they had no problem moving the ball between the 20 yard lines, but simply couldn’t finish drives.

It will also be interesting to see if Kelly is successfully able to make the transition from college to the pros with his offensive run and gun style.  I recent years, Steve Spurrier lacked success in Washington and Nick Saban lacked success in Miami.

Week 15 NFL Picks

Sunday, December 16th, 2012

Matt Schaub (AJ Guel, Wikimedia Commons)

After Cincinnati’s win over Philadelphia Thursday, I’m now 129-79-1 on the season. Here are the rest of my picks:

11am

Atlanta over NY Giants–The Falcons win a tight, high scoring game at home.

Green Bay over Chicago–I don’t like the Bears offense much.

Cleveland over Washington–No RG3, no win for the Skins.

St. Louis over Minnesota–I really like what the Rams have been doing as of late.

Jacksonville over Miami–The Jags aren’t as bad as their record indicates.

New Orleans over Tampa Bay–The Buccaneers struggle to contain Drew Brees.

Denver over Baltimore–Too much turmoil in Baltimore at the moment.

Week 14 NFL Picks

Sunday, December 9th, 2012

Robert Griffin III (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

After Denver’s 26-13 win over Oakland Thursday night, I am now 120-72-1 on the season. Here are my picks for Sunday:

11am

Pittsburgh over San Diego–With Ben Roethlisberger back, the Steelers will inch closer to a playoff spot.

St. Louis over Buffalo–The Rams defense is underrated as they face a Bills team inconsistent offensively.

Cincinnati over Dallas–The tragedy for the Cowboys will be too tough for the team to overcome.

Cleveland over Kansas City–Like the Rams, the Browns have an underrated defense themselves.

Indianapolis over Tennessee–Too many good things are happening in Indy at the moment for me not to pick them.

Chicago over Minnesota–The Vikings played the Packers tough last week, but will struggle offensively against the Bears.

Week 12 NFL Picks

Sunday, November 25th, 2012

Jay Cutler (Mike Shadle, Wikimedia Commons)

Watch out world. I’m smokin’ hot! Last week I went 13-1 with my only loss coming in the Carolina and Tampa Bay  game and went 3-0 on American Thanksgiving. That mean I’m 101-61-1 on the season.

Here are my Sunday Week 12 picks:

11am

Chicago over Minnesota–Jay Cutler is the difference for the Bears. Their offense drastically improves from last week.

Cincinnati over Oakland–The Bengals defense has been excellent the last two weeks. Last week Geno Atkins had two forced fumbles and a sack in limiting Kansas City to six points.

Pittsburgh over Cleveland–The Steelers aren’t that bad without Big Ben. Byron Leftwich showed some positive signs against the Ravens last week.

Indianapolis over Buffalo–Andrew Luck is really coming into his own as the Colts win a high scoring affair.

Weekend Sports Preview–October 20 & 21–MLB, NFL, Short Track Speed Skating & CFL

Saturday, October 20th, 2012

There will be a sixth game in the National League Championship Series. Last night in St. Louis, the San Francisco Giants stayed alive with a brilliant pitching performance from Barry Zito in a 5-0 win over the Cardinals.

Now the series shifts back to Northern California for Game 6 (Sunday, FOX, 5pm). In order for the Cardinals to win and advance to the World Series, they’ll need to win on the road. Ironically, the Cardinals (38-43) and the Tigers (38-43), were the only two teams this season with losing records on the road to make the playoffs and they are the clubs that are in the best position at the moment to win the World Series.

Jaguars name Mike Mularkey head coach

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

The Jacksonville Jaguars have named Mike Mularkey as their head coach, replacing interim head coach Mel Tucker and former permanent head coach Jack Del Rio.

Mularkey, who played in the NFL as a tight end from 1983-1991 with the Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers, has been in the NFL as a coach since 1994. He has previous head coaching experience with the Buffalo Bills from 2004-2005, where he went 14-18 over two seasons.

Mularkey has held offensive co-ordinator positions with the Steelers, Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons, and been in charge of tight ends with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Mularkey will have to do a better job in Jacksonville than he did last Sunday in the NFC Wildcard game in New York City. Sunday at Giants Stadium, the Falcons failed to score a point on offense in a 24-2 loss to the New York Giants. Their only two points came on a first half safety.

Mularkey will now be working closely with Maurice Jones-Drew, one of the elite running backs in the NFL.

Roughriders name Chamblin head coach

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have named Corey Chamblin as their next head coach.

If you say the word, who, I don’t blame you.

Chamblin spent last season as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats defensive co-ordinator. You can almost say the Roughriders are going back to the future, as they hired defensive co-ordinator Greg Marshall in last year’s offseason.

That didn’t work out very well at all for the Roughriders as Marshall went 1-7 as Saskatchewan missed the playoffs for the first time since 2001.

What even makes this move even more odd by General Manager Brendan Taman, was how poor the Tiger-Cats played defensively in facets of their game in the postseason. In the Eastern semi-final, they couldn’t stop the pass in a 52-44 overtime win in Montreal, as Anthony Calvillo threw for an amazing 513 yards. Then in the Eastern final, they couldn’t stop the run in a 19-3 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, as Chris Garrett ran for 190 yards.

Prior to his role as defensive co-ordinator, Chamblin worked with defensive backs in Calgary and Winnipeg. As a player, Chamblin played 11 games with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a cornerback in 1999.

Jaguars make coaching change

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

The Jacksonville Jaguars have become the fourth professional sports team in the last two days to make a coaching change.

On Tuesday, they fired Jack Del Rio and named defensive co-ordinator Mel Tucker his temporary replacement.

The Jaguars are 3-8 this season, but aren’t last in the AFC South. The worst team in the division are the 0-11 Indianapolis Colts.

The AFC South could well be the worst division in football when it comes to quarterbacks. With the Houston Texans now without Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart, I think the Titans’ Matt Hasselbeck is the AFC South’s best at the position. Yikes!

Getting back to the Jaguars, they have scored an NFL worst 138 points. Blaine Gabbert only has thrown six touchdown passes all year and Mike Thomas leads the team with only 368 receiving yards.  The fourth ranked Green Bay Packer (James Jones) has more receiving yards than Thomas, so does tight end Adrian Hernandez, who is fourth in receiving yards for the New England Patriots. Andre Johnson of the Houston Texans also has more receiving yards than Thomas in only five games.

Johnson finally signs with Titans

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

Chris Johnson (Jeff Haynes, Reuters)

One of the National Football League’s premier running backs has finally ended his holdout.

Chris Johnson has signed a six year contract worth $56 million, of which $30 million is guaranteed.

Johnson was fourth in rushing yards in 2010 with 1364, only behind Arian Foster of the Houston Texans, Jamaal Charles of the Kansas City Chiefs and Michael Turner of the Atlanta Falcons.

In 2009, Johnson had a remarkable year, becoming only the sixth running back of all-time to rush for 2,000 yards in a season, following O.J. Simpson of the Buffalo Bills, Eric Dickerson of the Los Angeles Rams, Barry Sanders of the Detroit Lions, Terrell Davis of the Denver Broncos and Jamal Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens.

Johnson’s contract deal followed Frank Gore’s three year contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers worth $21 million on Tuesday.

In other NFL news, running back Fred Taylor announced his retirement today at the age of 35. Taylor, who spent ten years with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 1998-2008, before ending his career with the New England Patriots, is 15th all-time in NFL rushing yards with 11,695.

Polamalu’s Hair: Week Eighteen Notes

Execution?

When Fox News analyst Tucker Carlson went on TV last month and said the words “Michael Vick” and “execution” in the same sentence, he wasn’t talking about his passer rating.

No, he was talking about how the Philadelphia Eagles QB should have been put to death for his abuse of dogs, which Vick spent two years in prison for.

Hold your applause.

This week he was back on “Hannity” to address those comments and showcase some of the other ridiculous things that go on inside his silly little head.

First off, despite a monotone delivery when he uttered the phrase “I believe fervently in second chances, but Michael Vick killed dogs,” Carlson says he just got “too emotional” when the subject came up.

Carlson says he’s not even comfortable with the death penalty, so of course he doesn’t think Vick should be executed. Here’s the thing though, he said it on national TV. If you thought that was good, just wait until you hear what comes next! (more…)
