Well folks, things sometimes happen in threes, and on Monday there were three coaching changes when the Carolina Hurricanes announced the firing of Paul Maurice and named Kirk Muller his replacement.
This was the second time Maurice was fired by the Hurricanes. He coached Carolina from 1996-2004 before being replaced by Peter Laviolette. After the Hurricanes won the 2006 Stanley Cup with Laviolette as their head coach, he was let in 2008 and replaced again by Maurice.
Hurricanes’ General Manager Jim Rutherford decided to keep his assistants– Tom Barrasso, Rod Brind’Amour and Dave Lewis. I hope Barrasso is more communicative with his players than he is with the media. I was in a scrum with him once at the Air Canada Center in Toronto, and Barrasso only gave me a one word answer to my question.
Muller, meanwhile, is the opposite of Barrasso, and is very open with the media. He had 959 points in 1349 games with the New Jersey Devils, Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Islanders, Dallas Stars and Florida Panthers from 1984-2003, winning the Stanley Cup in Montreal in 1993.
It is no surprise that Muller is getting a chance to coach the Hurricanes, as he has been highly praised throughout the NHL for his work as an assistant coach with the Canadiens the last five years under Guy Carbonneau, Bob Gainey and Jacques Martin.
