Kerrzy’s Notebook: 15 Minutes of Fame

Sunday, December 18th, 2011

Happy Monday!

It’s that time again folks – we’re back with a fresh episode of everyone’s favorite internet sports show: 15 Minutes of Fame!

This week on the show we’re talking about another concussion-filled week in the NHL, and going through the list of hired and fired coaches from around the league. As well, we react to the big news from last week in the CFL: The Edmonton Eskimos traded quarterback Ricky Ray, the face of the franchise, to the Toronto Argonauts.

In the GABBYs: Derek Jeter, Tebowing, Patrick Chan, the National Basketball League, fighting in hockey, Jerry Sandusky’s lawyers. The Punchline this week is the washrooms at the MTS Centre!

Canadiens fire Martin

Saturday, December 17th, 2011

The Montreal Canadiens have fired Jacques Martin as their head coach and replaced him on an interim basis with Randy Cunneyworth.

The Canadiens are tied for tenth place in the Eastern Conference with the Washington Capitals at 33 points, two points back of the Buffalo Sabres, Toronto Maple Leafs and New Jersey Devils for a playoff spot.

The move comes as a bit of a surprise in my opinion because the Canadiens were playing decent hockey, as were in the thick of things in the East.

But a major reason for the Canadiens struggles this year has been goal scoring. At 82 goals, only the New York Islanders have scored fewer goals in the Eastern Conference. Still, the team were playing solid defense, and Carey Price has been very good in between the Canadiens’ pipes, with a 2.29 goals against average.

Cunneyworth gets his first NHL head coaching assignment. The former NHL left winger played in 866 games with the Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins, Winnipeg Jets, Hartford Whalers, Chicago Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators from 1980-1999. Over the last three years, he has been an assistant in Atlanta and Montreal.

Hurricanes make coaching change

Monday, November 28th, 2011

Kirk Muller (Wikimedia Commons)

Well folks, things sometimes happen in threes, and on Monday there were three coaching changes when the Carolina Hurricanes announced the firing of Paul Maurice and named Kirk Muller his replacement.

This was the second time Maurice was fired by the Hurricanes. He coached Carolina from 1996-2004 before being replaced by Peter Laviolette. After the Hurricanes won the 2006 Stanley Cup with Laviolette as their head coach, he was let in 2008 and replaced again by Maurice.

Hurricanes’ General Manager Jim Rutherford decided to keep his assistants– Tom Barrasso, Rod Brind’Amour and Dave Lewis. I hope Barrasso is more communicative with his players than he is with the media. I was in a scrum with him once at the Air Canada Center in Toronto, and Barrasso only gave me a one word answer to my question.

Muller, meanwhile, is the opposite of Barrasso, and is very open with the media. He had 959 points in 1349 games with the New Jersey Devils, Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Islanders, Dallas Stars and Florida Panthers from 1984-2003, winning the Stanley Cup in Montreal in 1993.

It is no surprise that Muller is getting a chance to coach the Hurricanes, as he has been highly praised throughout the NHL for his work as an assistant coach with the Canadiens the last five years under Guy Carbonneau, Bob Gainey and Jacques Martin.

Heritage Classic (Bing Images)

Watching regular season NHL hockey outdoors doesn’t come around very often, and when it does, you have to make the most of it.

This past weekend, I attended the Heritage Classic, and it was an amazing sight to say the least. I had access to ice level for the Flames’ practice Saturday, attended the majority of the press conferences, watched the game with many international media from McMahon Stadium’s Media Work Room and interviewed the Flames in the Stampeders dressing room. Others who I interviewed included Paul Brandt, Jacques Martin, and Jay Feaster, and was involved in a press conference with Gary Bettman.
