Weekend Sports Preview–July 9-10–Women’s World Cup, Toronto Honda Indy, CFL, MLB, U.S. Women’s Open

Some of the best race car drivers in the world come to Toronto this weekend for the Honda Indy.

American Danica Patrick headlines a solid field that also includes current IndyCar Series point leader Dario Franchitti of Scotland, Indianapolis 500 runner-up Ryan Hunter-Reay of the United States, defending champion Will Power of Australia, and Canadians James Hinchcliffe, Alex Tagliani and Paul Tracy.

Remarkably however Indianapolis 500 champion Dan Wheldon of England won’t be in Toronto competing, but might be as a commentator. It completely leaves me shaking my head that the winner of IndyCar’s biggest annual race hasn’t been able to find a team to ride for since May 29.

The Toronto Honda Indy will go Sunday at 12pm on TSN.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

The greatest auto race of the year takes place Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis.

It is the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500. (The race was not held for two years during World War One and for four years during World War Two). In 1911, Ray Harroun of the United States was the first winner. Over that time, drivers from ten separate nations have won the coveted race including Canada’s own Jacques Villeneuve in 1995.

Well in 2011, Montreal’s Alex Tagliani has a great chance in joining Villeneuve in making Canadian history. He will be on the pole representing Sam Schmidt Motorsports.

James Hinchcliffe of Oakville, Ontario, an IndyCar rookie will start 13th, and Paul Tracy of West Hill, Ontario will start 24th.

There are also four women in the race. Joining American Danica Patrick, are Switzerland’s Simona de Silvestro, Brazil’s Ana Beatriz, and Great Britain’s Pippa Mann.

Weekend Sports Preview May 14-15–NHL Conference Finals, NBA Playoffs, MLB, NLL Champion’s Cup, Players’ Championship

Ryan Kesler (Bing Images)

A jammed packed weekend of sports takes this weekend. The Vancouver Canucks will host the San Jose Sharks in game one of the Western Conference Final (Sunday, 6pm, CBC).

This is the first Western Conference Final for the Canucks since they went to the Stanley Cup Final in 1994 and lost to the New York Rangers in seven games. But it is interesting that the Canucks’ playoff most valuable player is a Yankee. Ryan Kesler leads all players in the playoffs with 15 points. He also leads the Canucks in the playoffs in +/- with a +6, power play goals (3), short handed assists (1) and game winning goals (2).

Weekend Preview September 18-19

The Canadian Football League will dominate my sports viewing this weekend with three very intriguing matchups. If the Edmonton Eskimos at 2-8 are going to make any push for a playoff spot, they are going to have to win now and get some help.

Here is what I’ll be watching this weekend:

Saturday–2pm–MLB–Atlanta Braves @ New York Mets–FOX–The Braves (83-64) are quickly falling out of the National League East chase, as they’re three games back of the Philadelphia Phillies. Atlanta has not won a series since taking three of four games against the Mets at the end of August. The Braves are missing third baseman Chipper Jones from their lineup. The 1999 NL MVP is out for the season with a torn ACL. Atlanta will be sending Tim Hudson to the mound (15-8, 122 K, 2.62 ERA). Hudson has lost his last three starts against the Mets, Pirates and Cardinals, after a great start to the season. The Mets (74-73), who just swept the Pirates, will send September rookie callup Dillon Gee to the mound. The 24 year-old Texan has only given up one earned run to date in 13 innings of work.
