Capitals and Rangers to play Game 7 Saturday

There will be a one game elimination contest in the second round of the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

And yes Gary Bettman, even though the game will not be on NBC because of the weekend’s Player’s Championship, you’re getting the next best thing– a primetime game on a Saturday night in New York City, a game that will be seen from coast to coast on Hockey Night in Canada.

Last night in Washington, the Rangers just seemed to lack the energy that was necessary to be victorious and I’m not surprised that they were a little bit drained mentally. Both franchises are playing their second consecutive game seven. The Capitals beat the Boston Bruins in the opening round, while the Rangers got by the Ottawa Senators.

Alexander Ovechkin opened the scoring with a first period goal and Edmonton native Jason Chimera added to the Capitals lead in the second period in Washington’s 2-1 win in game six last night. The Rangers did outshoot the Capitals 31-23 but didn’t find a way to beat goaltender Braden Holtby until the final minute when Marian Gaborik scored his fourth of the playoffs.

Kreider worth watching for Rangers

Sunday, April 29th, 2012

A star is being born in front of our eyes as the Stanley Cup Playoffs are proceeding.

On Saturday, American rookie left winger Chris Kreider scored a goal and an assist as the New York Rangers defeated the Washington Capitals 3-1 to take a 1-0 series lead in the Eastern Conference Semi-Final.

Kreider scored the game winner at the seven minute mark of the third period to give the Rangers the victory. Kreider’s fast emergence is interesting because he has not yet played a regular season game. So far in the postseason, he has two goals and one assist, since playing the season with Boston College.

It is interesting that the Rangers have shown more confidence with Kreider than the Senators showed with Mark Stone in the first round of the playoffs.

Best & Worst

We saw the best and the worst of things on Wednesday night in Vancouver as the Stanley Cup Final came to an end – on one hand, a phenomenal series threw us another curve ball with the Boston Bruins finally beating the Canucks at Rogers Arena…but then, of course, all hell broke loose afterwards.

Seeing the pictures and video of the destruction in downtown Vancouver after that loss sends chills down my spine – it’s scary to watch a city turn into a madhouse like that, where regular people are flipping (and torching) cars or smashing windows and robbing stores. Let’s get a couple of things straight though – first of all, it was probably going to happen whether or not the Canucks won that game. Secondly, this isn’t just a Vancouver thing – it can (and does) happen in any big city! (After the Jump: More on the riots, Strangest goal of the NHL playoffs, Name That Team and Eric Hassli’s MLS wonder goal!) (more…)

Double Overtime Magic

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

Jason Chimera (Wikimedia Commons)

For the first time in eight years, there were two Stanley Cup Playoff games that went into double overtime on the same night.

At Madison Square Garden, Edmonton native Jason Chimera was the hero as he scored at 12:36 of double overtime past Henrik Lundqvist to give the Washington Capitals a come from behind 4-3 win over the New York Rangers. The Capitals got three third period goals, two from Marcus Johansson, to come back and tie the game at three after being down 3-0 at the end of the second period. The Capitals now have a 3-1 lead in the Eastern Conference quarterfinal.

The game I was watching was the double overtime game in Tampa Bay as the Pittsburgh Penguins took a 3-1 series lead on the Lightning with a game winning goal from James Neal.

Scott Hannan (Bridget Samuels, Wikimedia Commons)

One of the more interesting storylines  so far in the 2010-11 Stanley Cup Playoffs has been the strategy of the Washington Capitals. The players have bought into head coach Bruce Boudreau’s defensive mindset and limited the quality of scoring opportunities by the New York Rangers considerably. One Capital defenceman that is receiving considerably high praise is defenceman Scott Hannan who was acquired from the Colorado Avalanche for Tomas Fleischmann on November 30.  Hannan had four blocked shots and two hits in 28:39 in Game One Wednesday and was a +1 with a blocked shot in 21:34 last night. Offensively, two former Oilers have been producing for the Capitals. Jason Arnott and Jason Chimera found the puck past Henrik Lundqvist last night. Game three of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal is set for Sunday at 1pm (NBC) at New York’s Madison Square Garden with the Capitals leading the series 2-0.
