Snedeker and Cabrera lead after round three of the Masters

Saturday, April 13th, 2013

On Monday evening I was talking with Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun, who is in Augusta, Georgia this week as a fan at the Masters.

Eric asked me who I thought was going to win because he thought he would put some money on someone. Without hesitation, I replied “Brandt Snedeker”.

Snedeker was brilliant on Saturday down the stretch. He finished up with three birdies in the last six holes in shooting a three-under 69. Snedker, who has won already this year at the historic AT& T Pebble Beach Pro-Am near San Francisco, will have to beat a two-time Major champion to prove my flawless accuracy.

That is because Angel Cabrera of Argentina is tied for the lead with Snedeker at -7. Others in contention for the first major championship of the season are a trio of Australians. Veteran Adam Scott is at -6, followed by Jason Day and Marc Leishman at -5. Matt Kuchar of the United States cannot be counted out as well at -4. Tiger Woods meanwhile is lurking at -3.

Weekend Sports Preview–April 13-14–Masters, NHL & MLB

Tiger Woods (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

The biggest story heading into Saturday is Tiger Woods. According to CBS there was a possibility that Woods would be disqualified heading into the third round of the Masters (Saturday, CBS, 1:00 p.m.) for dropping his ball in an illegal area after his approach shot on the 15th hole hit the flag stick and went into the water. Woods apparently dropped his ball two yards back from where he should have dropped it.

However, according to ESPN, Woods was only given a two stroke penalty after officials reviewed the tape. Do you think Woods was given preferential treatment by officials because of his status or is a two-stroke penalty considered harsh enough? Please comment at www.anysportanytime.ca. One thing is for sure, and that is a major golf tournament with Tiger Woods boosts television ratings significantly more than a major golf tournament without him.

Day leads the Masters by a stroke

Friday, April 12th, 2013

The second round of the Masters is now been complete with Australian Jason Day leading 1992 champion Fred Couples of the United States and fellow Australian Marc Leishman by a stroke at -6.

Day, shot a -4 on Friday, after golfing in the final pairing with Padraig Harrington and Rickie Fowler. The young Australian recorded a key birdie on the 16th hole to separate himself from the pack.

The second round of the 2013 Masters will also be remembered for a shot that wasn’t made. On the fifteenth hole, Tiger Woods’s  approach shot hit the flag stick and went directly into the water. A sure birdie turned out to be a bogey.

Golf fans were also introduced to Tianlang Guan of China. At only 14 years of age, Guan made the cut at +4, despite receiving a one stroke penalty for playing too slow.

USA still leads Internationals 7-5

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Jim Furyk (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

The United States remain in the lead of the International squad 7-5 after Day Two of the Presidents Cup in Melbourne, Australia.

On Thursday (Friday in Melbourne), the Americans and the International team split the six four ball matches.

Two American teams have impressed me significantly to date. Yesterday I was very impressed with Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson. They won again today defeating Ernie Els of South Africa and Ryo Ishikawa of Japan 3 & 1.

I was also very impressed with Jim Furyk, the 2o03 United States Open Champion, who won his second consecutive match by pairing up with Phil Mickelson. The duo defeated Australian Adam Scott and South Korean Kyung-tae Kim 2 & 1. But the real reason the Americans got the point was because of Furyk’s putting, which was terrific in extremely windy conditions.

Once again, Tiger Woods lost. This time with Dustin Johnson to the Australian duo of Jason Day and Aaron Baddeley 1 up. Woods is the only American not to get on the scoreboard yet.

In other action, the American duo of Steve Stricker and Matt Kuchar defeated Y.E. Yang of South Korea and Robert Allenby of Australia 4 & 3. Australian Geoff Ogilvy, with a terrible mustache, and South Korean K.J. Choi defeated Bill Haas and Nick Watney 1 up and the South African duo of Charl Schwartzel and Retief Goosen defeated Hunter Mahan and David Toms 2 & 1.

Tseng domination

Sunday, June 26th, 2011

Yani Tseng (Bing Images)

Move over Rory McIlroy. You have company.

In a remarkable accomplishment this weekend at the LPGA Championship just outside of Rochester, New York, Yani Tseng won her fourth major today in hammering the field.

Tseng, shot a tournament round of -19, defeating American Morgan Pressel by ten strokes, who finished with a score of -9.

McIlroy defeated Jason Day of Australia by eight strokes a week ago in winning the U.S. Open at Congressional outside of Washington.

The blowouts in back-to-back weeks for golf, in my opinion are not great for the game. I tuned in to the LPGA Championship mid-afternoon today to see that Tseng had an 11 stroke lead. I switched the channel, knowing perfectly well that Tseng’s lead was completely insurmountable.

McIlroy wins U.S. Open

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

Rory McIlroy (Bing Images)

It could have been considered one of the most dominating golf performances ever.

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, currently 8th in the world, won the 111th United States Open this afternoon at Congressional (outside of Washington, D.C.) in overwhelming fashion.

McIlroy shot a two-under 69 to beat Australian Jason Day by eight strokes.

McIlroy’s -16 is the best ever score over four rounds at the United States Open, breaking the previous record of -12 set by Tiger Woods in 2000 at Pebble Beach.

For the second consecutive day, McIlroy protected his large lead he built on Friday beautifully. He birdied the first, fourth, tenth and sixteenth holes, while only bogeying the twelfth and seventeenth holes. On the tenth, McIlroy came a few inches away from recording a remarkable hole in one.

Domination by McIlroy continues

Saturday, June 18th, 2011

Rory McIlroy (Bing Images)

Rory McIlroy is running away with the United States Open at the Congressional Golf Course near Washington, D.C.

McIlroy built his lead with a two under 68 Saturday to take an eight stroke lead (-14) on South Korean Y.E. Yang (-6).

It wasn’t a dominating performance by McIlroy on Saturday, rather a patient one. He recorded a par on 13 of the 18 holes he played, trying his best to minimize mistakes.

The lack of aggressiveness in my opinion showed great maturity, a characteristic McIlroy lacked a little during the final round at Augusta.

The best rounds of the day were put together by England’s Lee Westwood and Australia’s Jason Day. They both shot a -6, and moved into a tie for third place at -5 with American Robert Garrigus.

Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, British Columbia is the top Canadian at +6 (tied for 54th), while Calgary’s Wes Heffernan struggled on Saturday, shooting a 79, and is tied for 71st.

Unusual high scores at the Byron Nelson this past weekend

Monday, May 30th, 2011

Keegan Bradley (Stan Badz, PGA Tour)

In analyzing the golf scores this past weekend I was very surprised to see the scores were so high this past week at the HP Byron Nelson Championship in Fort Worth, Texas.

American rookie Keegan Bradley shot a three under par and defeated American Ryan Palmer in a playoff.

American Joe Ogilvie (-2), Japan’s Ryuji Imada (-2) and Australia’s Jason Day (-1) were the only other three golfers to shoot under par.

Bradley’s -3 was the highest score to win the tournament since Bruce Lietzke won in 1981 when he shot +1. Also, just two years ago, South African Rory Sabbatini won the Byron Nelson by shooting a -19.

Wow. So how did the Byron Nelson Championship play more like a U.S. Open Golf course than the Bob Hope?

Schwartzel wins the Masters

Sunday, April 10th, 2011

Charl Schwartzel (David Cannon, Getty Images)

In one of the most interesting final days of the Masters, South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel was in the winner’s circle.

Schwartzel birdied the final four holes at Augusta to become the third South African to win the first Major tournament of the golf season. He joins Gary Player and Trevor Immelman.

Schwartzel defeated Australians Jason Day and Adam Scott by two strokes after shooting -14.

Weekend Sports Preview–April 9-10–Masters, World Men’s Curling Championship, NHL

Friday, April 8th, 2011

Jeff Stoughton (Bing Images)

Jeff Stoughton’s Winnipeg rink is now in the final of the World Men’s Curling Championship Sunday night in Regina (TSN, 5PM). This evening in the 1-2 game, Stoughton defeated Scotland’s Tom Brewster 5-2.

A major reason why Stoughton advanced to the final was because of two significant mistakes by Brewster. Down 3-2 to Stoughton in the eighth, Brewster was heavy with his final draw and gave up a steal. Then in the ninth, Brewster flashed his final stone and was unable to remove the Canadian stone, allowing Stoughton to steal another point.
