The Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames both lost on the road on Saturday. For Edmonton however, the loss was significantly more devastating as they try to qualify for a playoff spot in the Western Conference.
On Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles, Jeff Carter scored a goal and an assist as the Kings defeated the Oilers 4-1. With the loss, the Oilers remain three points back of the St. Louis Blues for eighth place in the Western Conference.
After a five game winning streak, the Oilers have now lost their last two games.
Meanwhile in Vancouver last night, the Canucks defeated the Calgary Flames 5-2. It was the Flames’ thirteenth consecutive loss on the road.
It was a milestone night for Canucks captain Henrik Sedin. In the second period, Sedin recorded his 600th career assist on the game winning goal by Alexandre Burrows. Sedin then added a second assist later in the second period on a goal by Alexander Edler, and a shorthanded goal with 11 seconds left in the game.
The Los Angeles Kings seem to be turning the corner after a rough start to the season.
On Wednesday night in Calgary, Jeff Carter scored a goal and an assist in a 3-1 Kings win over the Flames.
The Kings also got a multi-point game from defenceman Rob Scuderi who had two assists, and 26 saves from Jonathan Bernier.
The Kings also moved past the Edmonton Oilers into 10th place in the Western Conference and are one point back of the Dallas Stars for the eighth and final playoff spot. The Flames are four points back.
The Kings were the more organized team on Wednesday and their experience showed. Even though they only outshot the Flames 33-27, they had significantly more scoring opportunities. Their penalty killing was also very good as the Flames didn’t have a lot of quality scoring chances on their four power plays.
The Edmonton Oilers saw a point slip away, possibly two points in a heartbreaking 3-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings Tuesday night at Rexall Place.
Jeff Carter scored his seventh of the season last night for the Kings on a tip in from a shot from Trevor Lewis with 50 seconds remaining in the third period. Former Oiler Jarret Stoll then added an empty net goal with 22 seconds left to give Los Angeles insurance.
Another former Oiler, Colin Fraser also scored for the Kings who moved one point back of the Oilers in the Western Conference. Edmonton remains two points back of the Dallas Stars for the eighth and final playoff spot. The Kings are in Calgary tonight.
It was a gigantic loss for the Oilers, who now play Minnesota on Thursday and Phoenix on Saturday before going on their huge nine game road trip that could make or break their season.
The Los Angeles Kings have won their first Stanley Cup in franchise history.
Dustin Brown scored a goal and two assists as the Kings defeated the New Jersey Devils 6-1 to win the Stanley Cup Finals 4-2.
Now it is your turn. Please comment below what Los Angeles you are most happy for by winning the Stanley Cup.
Is it Darryl Sutter, who controversially was fired by the Calgary Flames after a solid run as Head Coach and General Manager?
Was it Dustin Penner, who signed a contract that many questioned in Edmonton, and flourished on the Kings second line with Mike Richards and Jeff Carter?
Was it Mike Richards, Simon Gagne and Drew Doughty who have now won an Olympic Gold medal and Stanley Cup?
This week on 15 Minutes of Fame – we break down the opening games of the Stanley Cup Final, discuss the news involving Nick Lidstrom & Tim Thomas and look at the coaching situation in three NHL cities. As well, we talk about the NFL bounty story and the NBA Draft Lottery!
In the GABBYs: Johan Santana, Cal FC, the Charlotte Bobcats, Mayweather & Pacquiao, Jonathan Lucroy & New York TV station WABC. The Punchline this week is Terrell Owens.
The Los Angeles Kings are leading the Stanley Cup Finals 2-0. Last night in New Jersey, Jeff Carter scored in overtime to give the Kings a 2-1 victory.
The game was extremely similar to game one. Same score. Same sequence of goals being scored with Los Angeles opening the scoring, New Jersey tying the game up before the Kings winning in overtime.
The Kings remarkable run on the road in the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs continue. They have now gone 10-0 away from Los Angeles and are a solid 14-2 in the playoffs to date. Game three of the series is Monday back in Los Angeles.
If game two put you to sleep, I don’t blame you. There wasn’t much action on both sides. But understand something. The Devils and Kings got here by playing this way, (very disciplined, dump and chase action, and low risks), so why should we have expected anything different?
The Los Angeles Kings are headed to the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals after their 4-3 overtime win over the Phoenix Coyotes in game five of the Western Conference Final.
Former Edmonton Oiler Dustin Penner scored the overtime winner with 2:18 left in the first overtime from Jeff Carter and Slava Voynov. Penner and Carter really played well with Mike Richards and give the Kings solid second line scoring.
Kings defenceman Drew Doughty was named the first star despite getting a two minute minor for interference in overtime. Doughty, who played with an incredible amount of emotion, led the Kings offensively with a goal and an assist and made a brilliant play defensively to break up an odd man rush for Phoenix.
The game did not occur without controversy however. On the shift before Penner’s game winner Kings’ captain Dustin Brown kneed Michal Rozsival of the Coyotes, but no penalty was given.
The Los Angeles Kings are quite possibly the best team in hockey.
Tuesday night in Phoenix, the Kings continued their excellent playoff stretch by going 10-1, after their convincing 4-0 shutout win over the Coyotes to take a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference Final.
Jeff Carter led the Kings attack with a hat trick while Jonathan Quick made 24 saves.
But a major reason why Los Angeles Kings won was discipline and they were able to capitalize against a Phoenix Coyotes team that lacked disciplinary behaviour.
Coyotes’ forwards Shane Doan and Martin Hanzal both received game misconducts for separate boarding incidents. Doan’s penalty led to a Jeff Carter power play goal, his first of two on the evening.
Another King who is red hot lately is Meadowlake, Saskatchewan native Dwight King who has three goals in two games, including the game winning goal last night.
Game three of the series is Thursday in Los Angeles.
It was a very intriguing opening night of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
First off, you have the Pittsburgh Penguins blowing a huge 3-0 lead only to see the Philadelphia Flyers storm back to win the game 4-3 in overtime on a game winning goal by Jakub Voracek. Other key performers for the Flyers Wednesday night were Daniel Briere who notched two goals and Brayden Schenn with a goal and two assists. It will be interesting to see how the Penguins rebound from a devastating loss.
In Vancouver, the Canucks had penalty issues all night long, accumulating 27 minutes in penalties, highlighted by a five minute major for boarding by Byron Bitz in the second period. The Kings kept the game close, and with the score 2-2, former Oiler Dustin Penner scored the game winner with 3:14 left. How many times Penner will come to play during the playoffs is anyone’s guess, but he was a factor Wednesday night as he was a recipient of an outstanding Jeff Carter pass with his skate in a 4-2 Kings win.
In Nashville, the Preds were lucky to beat the Red Wings 3-2. The team got two garage goals early–a Paul Gaustad shot from a bad angle that went off of Brad Stuart’s skate and a Matt Halischuk shot near the blueline that was tipped by Gabriel Bourque that handcuffed Jimmy Howard.
This week on a special NHL Trade Deadline edition of 15 Minutes of Fame, we try to pick out the winners and the losers of the big day and do our best to analyze the one trade pulled off by the Edmonton Oilers. We also look at the biggest pre-deadline trade and non-trade, which was Jeff Carter to the LA Kings and Ales Hemsky re-upping with the Oil.
In the GABBYs: Chicago Cubs fans, CC Sabathia, Jeremy Lin, Greg Oden, Rajon Rondo & Tommi Virtanen. The Punchline this week is MMA fighter Dan Lariviere!
The Los Angeles Kings got another offensive sniper on Thursday. Now the question is can he produce in a Kings offensive attack loaded with talent but are simply not producing?
In a blockbuster deal, the Kings traded defenceman Jack Johnson and a first round pick to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Jeff Carter. The first round pick will either be in 2012 or 2013.
So far this season it is very safe to say that Jeff Carter has underperformed as a Blue Jacket. The long time Philadelphia Flyer who was traded to Columbus in the offseason, only has 15 goals and 10 assists in an injury plagued year. He has missed significant time this season with a separated shoulder and broken ankle.
The Kings are in desperate need of some offense. Shockingly they rank dead last in the NHL with 129 goals scored.
Last season Carter had 36 goals and 30 assists and recorded a career high of 46 goals and 38 assists in 2009. Carter will also be reacquainted with former teammate Mike Richards who he played with regularly in Philadelphia.
Johnson, meanwhile was playing second fiddle in Los Angeles on the point to Drew Doughty. Now in Columbus, he’ll be the go-to-guy on the Blue Jacket blueline. Johnson, interestingly, only has one fewer point this season than Carter and will be counted on for many minutes.
This week on 15 Minutes of Fame we’re discussing some potential trades from around the NHL, Alex Ovechkin’s work ethic and news that former Oiler Mike Comrie is calling it a career. As well, we look at what the Edmonton Eskimos did in the opening days of CFL free agency, what LeBron James said about returning to Cleveland and the circus that surrounded the recent fight between Vitali Klitschko and Dereck Chisora.
In the GABBYs: Teemu Selanne, the Detroit Red Wings, Brad Marchand, the Rochester Knighthawks, Roburt Sallie and Brazilian soccer club XV de Jau. The Punchline this week is the “Piggyback Bandit,” Sherwin Shayegan.
The Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames were both on the wrong end of the stick Monday, and both lost by scores of 4-1.
In Columbus, the Blue Jackets scored early and often against the Flames. Jeff Carter and Antoine Vermette both scored in the first seven minutes to put the Blue Jackets up 2-0.
Carter, who missed ten games earlier in the season with a broken foot, scored another in the second period on the power play past Flames’ backup goaltender Henrik Karlsson for his first multi-goal game as a Blue Jacket.
Calgary now falls to 8-10-1.
Meanwhile in Texas, the Oilers lost to the Dallas Stars.
It was a complete effort from Dallas, who received a point from 11 different players. One Star forward that impressed me by his work ethic was Radek Dvorak, who played for the Oilers from 2002-2006. Dvorak scored his first of the season, shorthanded into an empty net.
It is a tough stretch for the Oilers who play again tonight at Nashville at 6pm.
The National Hockey League Season starts in one hour from now.
For the first time in hockey history I am predicting that the Stanley Cup is coming to Los Angeles.
I like the Kings’ nucleus of talent and their two key acquisitions– Simon Gagne from Tampa Bay and Mike Richards from Philadelphia. They also have two of the best young defencemen in the game in Drew Doughty and Jack Johnson and solid goaltending in Jonathan Quick.
I like how the Sabres improved their team as well in acquiring Ville Leino from Philadelphia and defencemen Christian Ehrhoff from Vancouver and Robyn Regehr from Calgary. They have excellent balance of youth and experience, plus outstanding goaltending in Ryan Miller.
In the west, I am predicting the Columbus Blue Jackets to make the playoffs over the Phoenix Coyotes. The loss of Ilya Bryzgalov to Philadelphia will be a huge blow for them, while the Blue Jackets got another sniper in Jeff Carter from Philadelphia.
In the east, I think it will now be the year that the Toronto Maple Leafs make the postseason. I am predicting them and the Carolina Hurricanes to make the playoffs over the Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Rangers.
