The 2012-13 NBA season starts Tuesday. Yes, I know the Los Angeles Lakers now have Dwight Howard and Steve Nash, the Miami Heat have Ray Allen and the Toronto Raptors have Kyle Lowry and Landry Fields, but I think it is time to look at other significant off-season moves in the offseason.

The Dallas Mavericks have changed their roster significantly, and got younger in the process. In are German center Chris Kaman (from New Orleans), shooting guard O.J. Mayo (from Memphis) and point guard Darren Collison (from Indiana). All three averaged in double digits in scoring. Out meanwhile are Jason Kidd (New York) and Jason Terry (Boston).

Another team that has a completely different look are the Minnesota Timberwolves, who are gambling on Russian forward Andrei Kirilenko from Utah (11.7 ppg) and Brandon Roy from Portland who is coming out of retirement at the age of 28.

Kerrzy’s Notebook: When Sports Go Viral

Friday, February 17th, 2012

The internet certainly is a great time-waster, isn’t it?

Whether you’re trying to get through a long day at school, a long day at work, or just a long day in general, the internet is always there to offer a helping hand, usually in the form of completely random, useless information. In our case though – it’s viral videos!

Here is a glimpse into what is happening in the world of viral sports flicks at the moment:

Let’s start off on the slopes with this stunning video from fashion photographer and filmmaker Jacob Sutton (via The Nosebleeds) – he got pro snowboarder William Hughes to wear an LED suit and shred some pow late at night! (VIDEO AFTER THE JUMP!) (more…)

Lin is the talk of NBA

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Jeremy Lin (Zheng Yuwen, Wikimedia Commons)

The sports world is currently buzzing about New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin.

The second year undrafted player out of Harvard, who after playing 29 games with the lowly Golden State Warriors a year ago, and was almost cut a couple of weeks ago by the Knicks, has turned into an overnight sensation.

Everybody is talking Lin. Knick fans are chanting “All you got to do is Lin”. You could call it Linmania or Lincanity. Right now Jeremy Lin is huge.

Andy why not? In the last four games, Lin has made four starts and led the Knicks to impressive  victories over the Utah Jazz, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves. Over that time, he has been averaging an amazing 27.3 points per game, headlined by a 38 point performance Thursday in a 92-85 win over the Lakers on Thursday.

So how did Lin get his chance in New York? Well, basically due to a groin injury to Carmelo Anthony and the absence of Amare Stoudemire who needed to deal with some personal issues because of the recent death of his brother Hazell, who passed away last week in a car accident in Florida.

Tomorrow night, Linmannia will enter Toronto for the first time as the Knicks take on the Toronto Raptors. The Knicks currently lead the Raptors by 4.5 games for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Stoudemire, meanwhile, is expected back tomorrow night, so it will be interesting to see how the two gel.

How the Knicks do over the next week will go a long way in determining if they will be in the Steve Nash sweepstakes or not.
