Furyk & McDowell tied at the U.S. Open

Saturday, June 16th, 2012

Jim Furyk (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

For the second consecutive day American Jim Furyk has the lead at the United States Open. This time however he is sharing the lead with only one golfer instead of two.

Furyk, the 2003 United States Open champion, shot an even par seventy on Saturday to match his round one score on Thursday. He is tied for the lead with Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell, the 2010 United States Open champion, who shot a 2-under par 68.

The third round was definitely moving day. Household names in the golf world such as Ernie Els and Lee Westwood moved up, while round two co-leaders Tiger Woods and David Toms moved down. Westwood shot a 67 and Els shot a 68 to move into contention for the lead. They are tied for fourth place at +2 and are three strokes back of Furyk and McDowell. Woods meanwhile moved down from first to fourteenth after a +5 on Saturday, while Toms dropped to eighteenth after shooting a 76.

Weekend Sports Preview–US Open, Euro 2012 & NBA Finals

Friday, June 15th, 2012

Tiger Woods (Angela George, Wikimedia Commons)

The leaderboard is exciting at the 2012 U.S. Open. Jim Furyk, Tiger Woods and David Toms who are all major winners from the past are tied for the lead at golf’s second major of the year at -1. They are the only golfers in the field to not only break par, but be even or better.

Furyk, who is playing with Woods’ former caddie Mike “Fluff” Cowan, shot a 1-under par, the third best score of the day.

A major story from the second round however was the play of 17 year-old amateur Beau Hossler, who remarkably had the lead for a short period of time in the second round, before struggling on the front eight. Still, he did make a remarkable chip in on the seventh hole to stay in contention.

Television coverage will get under way on NBC at 2pm on Saturday and Sunday. Here are the other events I’ll be watching:

Easter Weekend Sports Preview–Masters, World Men’s Curling Championship, Women’s World Hockey Championship, NBA, MLB, NLL

Friday, April 6th, 2012

The Masters will obviously headline my television viewing this  weekend with the very first major of the PGA Season.  Currently Peter Hanson of Sweden (-5) leads U.S. Open Champion Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, former British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa, Ben Crane of the United States and day one leader Lee Westwood of England by a stroke.

Other players in contention are Major winners Zach Johnson, Jim Furyk and Paul Lawrie.

The television coverage for the tournament is Friday at 1pm on TSN, Saturday at 1:30pm on CBS, and Sunday at noon on CBS.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Friday–NLL–Rochester Knighthawks @ Calgary Roughnecks–7pm–I’m heading down to the Scotiabank Saddledome this evening to see the Roughnecks in National Lacrosse League action. At 10-3, the Roughnecks are tied for first place in the West Division with the Colorado Mammoth.  The Roughnecks lead the NLL with 180 goals scored, are led by former Knighthawk Shawn Evans, who leads the team in scoring with 58 points.

USA wins Presidents Cup

Saturday, November 19th, 2011

Tiger Woods (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

The United States of America have won the 2011 Presidents Cup in Melbourne, Australia.

Saturday night (Sunday afternoon in Melbourne), the Americans got singles victories from Hunter Mahan, Nick Watney, Jim Furyk, David Toms, Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker to beat the International Team 19-15.

But it was the play of Woods and Toms in round five singles action that impressed me the most. Woods was in complete control in his match in defeating Australian Aaron Baddeley 4 & 3, and Toms was even more dominating in defeating fellow Australian Robert Allenby 7 & 5.

The most impressive American shot of the day came from Jim Furyk, who was the best American golfer all week, as he went 5-0. Furyk recorded an eagle on the second hole and never looked back in defeating Ernie Els 4 & 3.

With the win, the Americans continue to dominate the Presidents Cup. They have gone 7-1-1 since the first event took place in Gainesville, Virginia in 1994.

Weekend Sports Preview–November 19 & 20–CFL West & East Final, Presidents Cup, NCAA, NHL, NFL

Saturday, November 19th, 2011

The Edmonton Eskimos are only one win away from the 99th Grey Cup in Vancouver, British Columbia next weekend.

On Sunday, they will have to find a way to beat the Lions without star running back Jerome Messam. As I mentioned earlier in the week, I find the possibility of the Eskimos’ running game getting going is still there because the Lions’ defensive line and ability to stop the run has sometimes been a weakness, even with Solomon Elimimian and Brent Johnson leading the way.

But the Eskimos will need to find a way themselves to do a better job in stopping quarterback Travis Lulay, the Western Division nominee for the Canadian Football League’s most outstanding player award. In the Lions’ 29-20 win over Edmonton on October 29, Lulay had three touchdown passes for 322  yards.

USA still leads Internationals 7-5

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Jim Furyk (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

The United States remain in the lead of the International squad 7-5 after Day Two of the Presidents Cup in Melbourne, Australia.

On Thursday (Friday in Melbourne), the Americans and the International team split the six four ball matches.

Two American teams have impressed me significantly to date. Yesterday I was very impressed with Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson. They won again today defeating Ernie Els of South Africa and Ryo Ishikawa of Japan 3 & 1.

I was also very impressed with Jim Furyk, the 2o03 United States Open Champion, who won his second consecutive match by pairing up with Phil Mickelson. The duo defeated Australian Adam Scott and South Korean Kyung-tae Kim 2 & 1. But the real reason the Americans got the point was because of Furyk’s putting, which was terrific in extremely windy conditions.

Once again, Tiger Woods lost. This time with Dustin Johnson to the Australian duo of Jason Day and Aaron Baddeley 1 up. Woods is the only American not to get on the scoreboard yet.

In other action, the American duo of Steve Stricker and Matt Kuchar defeated Y.E. Yang of South Korea and Robert Allenby of Australia 4 & 3. Australian Geoff Ogilvy, with a terrible mustache, and South Korean K.J. Choi defeated Bill Haas and Nick Watney 1 up and the South African duo of Charl Schwartzel and Retief Goosen defeated Hunter Mahan and David Toms 2 & 1.

USA takes the early lead in the President’s Cup

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Webb Simpson (Yahoo! Images)

While most sports news outlets are discussing Adam Scott’s blowout victory with K.J. Choi over Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker, I am taking this blog into a different direction.

The Americans, except for Woods and Stricker, played almost flawlessly on Wednesday night taking a 4-2 lead over the International squad after Day One of the President’s Cup in Melbourne, Australia.

In last night’s foursome play, the one American golfer I was impressed with the most was Webb Simpson, who is starting to become a household name in the sport. He teamed up with Bubba Watson and surprisingly took out Ernie Els and Ryo Ishikawa 4 & 2.

If you haven’t heard of Simpson, it is now time. The 26 year-old native of Raleigh, North Carolina finished second on the PGA Tour money list last season after winning the Wyndham Championship in his home state and the Deutsche Bank Championship during the Fedex Playoffs.

Simpson, who seemed to be nervous early in his round, credits Watson for significantly calming him down.

In other impressive American victories yesterday, David Toms and Hunter Mahan defeated the South Korean duo of Kyung-tae Kim and Y.E. Yang 6 & 5, while Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk beat Robert Allenby and Retief Goosen 4 & 3.

Getting back to K.J. Choi who helped Scott beat Woods and Stricker 7 up, Choi almost made one of the most remarkable golf shots of all-time. With his back completely to the hole, he used the slope of a hill to the right of the hole to get his golf ball a few inches away from the cup.

Action continues to fourball this afternoon.

Weekend Sports Preview–August 13-14–PGA Championship & Rogers Cup

Keegan Bradley (Stan Badz, PGA Tour)

This year I have already introduced you to Keegan Bradley, the Byron Nelson Classic winner, and the 25 year-old rookie on the PGA Tour whose aunt is LPGA legend Pat Bradley. Now the native of Woodstock, Vermont is tied for the lead after round two of the PGA Championship at -5 with American Jason Dufner.

Bradley shot a dazzling 64 yesterday at the Atlanta Athletic Club, but because he finished on the front nine of the Highlands Course, he didn’t have a strong of a gallery on his final hole if he would have finished on the eighteenth hole.

Dufner, meanwhile, shot a 65, including an eagle on the fifth. Only once has Dufner, a native of Cleveland, finished in the top ten of a Major. He finished fifth at the 2010 PGA Championship in Wisconsin and is still looking for his first win on tour.

An American is in great position to win a major for the first time since Phil Mickelson won the 2010 Masters. Only two non-Americans (John Senden of Australia, tied for third at -4, and Andres Hansen of Denmark, tied for seventh at -3) are in the top ten.

Canadian advantage at RBC Canadian Open?

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

Mike Weir (Richard Wayne, Wikimedia Commons)

It hasn’t been a great year in Canadian golf. Mike Weir and Stephen Ames haven’t had a great golf season by any means.

But if there was ever a time for someone to step up, it could be this week. Why? Well, the top golfers in the world that are participating, such as Luke Donald, Ernie Els, Rickie Fowler, Jim Furyk, Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel, all played at the British Open in Sandwich, England last week.

That’s eight time zones away from the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver. Can you spell jet lag?

With all the top talent in the world competing at Royal St. George’s, the Canadians stayed home.

True, none of them qualified, but whatever extra practice any of them received while in Vancouver could be a benefit starting today.

Among the Canadians that will be competing this week include Ames and Dustin Risdon of Calgary and Mitch Evanecz of Red Deer.

Woods parts ways with Williams

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

Steve Williams (Bing Images)

It looks like caddie Steve Williams will be working significantly more with Australian golf star Adam Scott in the future.

On Wednesday, Tiger Woods parted ways with Williams, his caddie for the last twelve years. Over that time, Williams was on Woods’ bag for 13 of his 14 major titles.

Woods did not report who would replace Williams and when he was planning to return to golf. Williams, from New Zealand, had worked with Scott at the U.S. Open, British Open and AT&T National (third place finish) in 2011.

According to ESPN, Woods apparently approved of Williams’ request to caddie for Scott while he was hurt, but then later changed his mind.

Williams’ net worth is estimated at $20 million.

This is the second time in Woods’ career he has made a caddie change. Mike “Fluff” Cowan, had been Woods’ caddie from 1996-99 and was his caddie when he won his first major golf tournament in 1997 at the Masters. Woods apparently got rid of Cowan because according to the Washington Post, Cowan revealed the salary Woods paid him. Since 1999, Cowan has been Jim Furyk’s caddie.

Weekend Sports Preview October 1-3

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Tiger Woods (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

I won’t be able to get up in the middle of the night this weekend to watch golf (have a darn head cold that has got in the way), but will get up as early as I possible can the next three mornings.

The Ryder Cup is this weekend from Newport, Wales. The best golfers from Europe play the best golfers from the United States in a fourball and foursome competition Friday and Saturday, then on Sunday, there are exciting head-to-head singles matches for spectators to enjoy.

But, amazingly, NBC’s coverage on Saturday will be on tape delay.

Here are the events I’ll be watching this weekend.

Weekend Sports Recap–September 25-26

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Jim Furyk (Bing Images)

A very interesting weekend in sports indeed.

You had the Eskimos record their most impressive performance of the season, the Stampeders their worst, the Alouettes getting by the Blue Bombers in a high scoring affair and the Riders finding a way to beat the Ti-Cats.

In the NFL, I was most impressed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Playing traditional Steelers’ football–running and defense, the team is 3-0 without their former captain Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Running back Rashard Mendenhall had 143 yards and a touchdown, and defensive end Brett Keisel had a 73 yard interception for a touchdown, in the Steelers 38-13 win over Tampa Bay.
