Weekend Sports Preview–November 12-13–CFL Playoffs, NFL, NHL, CIS, NCAA

Friday, November 11th, 2011

On Sunday, the Calgary Stampeders (11-7) will go on the road to take on the Edmonton Eskimos (11-7) in the CFL Western Division Semi-Final.

The Eskimos won the season series 2-1, but the Stampeders won their only matchup at Commonwealth Stadium, 30-20 in Edmonton on September 9.

But this is a much different Stampeders team than what was put on the field by Head Coach and General Manager John Hufnagel two months ago. Since then, Hufnagel has replaced Henry Burris with Drew Tate at the quarterback position and Joffrey Reynolds with Jon Cornish at running back.

Still I cannot ignore the fact that in the Labour Day rematch, Burris passed for 316 yards and Reynolds ran for 80 yards.

But since Tate has taken over the starting role in Calgary, the Stampeders are 3-0.

The big news in Edmonton is the health of running back Jerome Messam, who, according to TSN, is questionable with a lower-body injury that flared up during Monday’s practice. Messam became the first Canadian to rush for 1000 yards since 2000 this season. The game can be seen Sunday on TSN at 2:30pm.

By the way, my gut is telling me the Stamps will win. I feel the veteran leadership, healthier offensive line and playoff experience for the Stampeders is key and will get them through on Sunday.

Stampeders win offensive slugfest in Regina

Friday, August 12th, 2011

The Edmonton Eskimos now have company for first place in the CFL West.

On Friday night, the Calgary Stampeders capitalized on their opportunities and defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders 45-35 to improve to 5-2, the same record as the Eskimos.

A major part of the football game was a 117 yard interception return for a touchdown by Keon Raymond, the fourth longest in CFL history. At the time it put the Stampeders up 38-14.

Saskatchewan’s defense was horrendous in the first half, but much better in the second half. I think it is still stunning to see a Greg Marshall coached team be so poor on defense. The Roughriders fall to 1-6 and it is very possible that Marshall could lose his job before Saskatchewan plays in Toronto on Thursday.

The Roughriders got their offense together in the fourth quarter in outscoring Calgary 21-7 in the final quarter. Don’t be surprised if Marshall has a stern talking to running back Hugh Charles.

Charles, recorded Saskatchewan’s first three touchdowns, but then did three back flips after getting his trick, even though the Roughriders were down 38-21.

Stampeders beat Tiger-Cats for first home win

Sunday, August 7th, 2011

For the first time in the 2011 Canadian Football League season, the Calgary Stampeders have won at McMahon Stadium.

On Saturday night, the Stampeders  defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 32-20, in front of a solid crowd of 29, 307.

A major reason for the Stampeders’ success was that they were able to play turnover free football. Quarterback Henry Burris had zero interceptions in 39 pass attempts, while the running back tandem of Joffrey Reynolds and Jon Cornish had no fumbles on 14 carries.

Actually, the only turnover came late in the game on an Eric Fraser interception. The native of Burnaby, British Columbia and product of Central Michigan recorded his first career interception that sealed a Stampeder victory.

Stampeders win wild one in B.C.

Saturday, July 9th, 2011

The Calgary Stampeders won their first game of the 2011 Canadian Football League regular season last night by defeating the British Columbia Lions 34-32.

After a defensive struggle in the first half, where the Stampeders clinged to a 7-6 first half lead, the offensive floodgates happened in the third quarter.

Calgary got three of the five touchdowns on the board, highlighted by a 61 yard strike from Henry Burris to Nik Lewis that put Calgary up 28-20.

The game came down to the wire however. With just over a  minute remaining, Lions’ quarterback Travis Lulay had a five yard run into the end zone to pull B.C. within two, 34-32 Calgary. After a two point conversion failed, the Stampeders once again had the ball, but Henry Burris’s hand-off to Joffrey Reynolds was botched, allowing Lions’ linebacker Solomon Elimimian to recover the ball on the Lions’ 49 yard line. Then, on the final play of the game, a 55 yard field goal attempt by Paul McCallum was wide.

Stamps lose opener in CFL season

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011

It was not a strong cohesive performance by the Calgary Stampeders in their regular season debut on Canada Day Friday.

The Calgary Stampeders lost 23-21 to the Toronto Argonauts and it was the kicking game that was the most significant difference at McMahon Stadium.

Rob Maver only went one for four in field goal attempts, missing opportunities from 21 and 34 yards. Argonauts’ kicker Noel Prefontaine, on the other hand went three for three, including converting a 43 yard field goal attempt with 22 seconds left to give the Argonauts two key points.

The poor special teams performance by the Stampeders did not only come from Maver. Stampeders’ kick returner Larry Taylor fumbled the ball early in the second half, that led to a Prefontaine field goal to put the Argonauts up 10-5.

Offensively, the Stampeders missed many great opportunities to score touchdowns over field goals. Henry Burris seemed to be out of sync with his offense at key times. Burris had 293 yards passing, and combined with Joffrey Reynolds for 107 yards on the ground, but were not able to execute when it mattered most.

2011 Calgary Stampeders preview

In the third segment of a four part series, it’s time to analyze the Calgary Stampeders for the 2011 Canadian Football League season.

I see the Stampeders battling the Saskatchewan Roughriders for first place in the CFL’s Western Division. Both teams have significantly stronger depth than the Edmonton Eskimos and British Columbia Lions.

The most significant acquisitions for Calgary in the off-season were linebacker Tim St. Pierre from the Edmonton Eskimos, defensive back Geoff Tisdale from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and kick returner Larry Taylor from the Montreal Alouettes. St. Pierre was the Eskimos’ Most Outstanding Special Teams player in 2010, while Taylor was the 2009 CFL Most Outstanding Player Award winner.

The Calgary Stampeders and Toronto Argonauts made a multi-player trade Thursday afternoon.

According to the Canadian Press, the Stampeders traded wide receiver P.K. Sam and defensive tackle Miguel Robede to Toronto for wide receiver Reggie McNeal and defensive tackle Adrian Davis.

Sam and McNeal are both imports, while Robede and Davis are both non-imports.

Calgary Stampeders Game Recap November 5

Saturday, November 6th, 2010

The Calgary Stampeders have closed out the 2010 CFL Regular Season with a victory.

It might not have been very convincing, but a 38-35 win on the road against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers deserves a thumbs up.

Quarterback Henry Burris’s night was short and sweet. He threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Romby Bryant early in the first quarter. Burris’ totals were 3 for 3 for 55 yards and then watched Drew Tate take control for the rest of the evening.

Calgary Stampeders Game Recap–October 29

The number one offense and the number one defense in the Canadian Football League looked like the number one offense and the number one defense in the Canadian Football League Friday night at McMahon Stadium.

Calgary defeated Hamilton 55-24 to make a significant statement as we are headed to the postseason. Calgary improved to 12-5 and are tied with Montreal as the best team in the Canadian Football League.

Leading 3-0 early in the first quarter, Stamps’ defensive back Dwight Anderson intercepted a Kevin Glenn pass for the touchdown to make the score 10-0 Calgary.

Calgary Stampeders Game Recap–October 17

Monday, October 18th, 2010

The Western Final looks more and more like it will be hosted by Calgary in 2010.

Yesterday afternoon  the Calgary Stampeders defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders 34-26 at Regina’s Mosaic Stadium.

Down 14-0, the Stampeders didn’t get off to a great start offensively or defensively.

But momentum shifted when Saskatchewan suffered key second quarter injuries to kicker Luca Congi and wide receiver Rob Bagg.

Calgary Stampeders Game Recap–October 11

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

For the third time in their last four games, the Calgary Stampeders played extremely lousy, and in this particular game I finished paying attention to the game at half time!

The Alouettes’ defense steamrolled the Stampeders by limiting Calgary to only four first half points– a Burke Dales 50 yard punt single in the first quarter and a Rob Maver 24 yard field goal in the second quarter.

Weekend Sports Preview–September 25-26

Football, football, and ah yes, more football.

With the CFL’s regular season complete in just over a month from now and the NFL’s regular season now kicking into high gear, no time is better than the present to watch this magnificently physical sport.

Here are the games I’ll be watching this weekend.

Saturday–7:30pm–CFL–B.C. Lions @ Calgary Stampeders–TSN–The 9-2 Calgary Stampeders can clinch a home playoff game this evening with a victory, against a 3-8 Lions squad they have dominated in recent outings. Calgary has won the last eight regular season games against B.C. , with the Lions last win coming on November 3, 2007. Don’t expect the Stampeders to activate newly acquired running back Jesse Lumsden of their practice roster any time soon. Calgary just has too much depth at that position, led by Joffrey Reynolds and Jon Cornish.
